Book excerpt: This book is the first English-language study to explore the shifting political rationales and cultural practices in contemporary Trindu, a remote, nomadic and agricultural county in Yushu Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, in the far west of the People’s Republic of China. The 1980s social and economic ‘reform and opening up’ in China has involved limited devolution of power, the localization of fiscal responsibilities and a relaxation of many ‘cultural’ and some ‘religious’ prohibitions. By then, however, many aspects of society had undergone far-reaching alterations through the upheavals of the Maoist revolutionary era. The first part of the study investigates the changing resonance of idioms of identification as bases for social inclusion and political mobilization. The second half explores how key social concepts are elaborated in the contexts of ‘ritual practice’, ‘modernity’ and ‘media’. The author argues that Trindu is intimately bound up with, and has ramifications for, China’s nation-state politics, and others within that nation-state, and cannot be understood without primary reference to that politics.

Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

In many of these cases, the person's native language is an LLD (Language of Lesser Diffusion): a language that has relatively few speakers in one specific location or geographical area, in relation to the population as a whole. These people have the right to be addressed in their own language. The need for legal interpreters and translators of LLDs is therefore great, and still rising. Given the particular characteristics of this type of languages, specific methodologies and programs are required for LLD interpreter training. Existing strategies in organizing training were analyzed by the TraiLLD consortium in order to test their efficiency, to improve them, and to develop alternative approaches. The result is an evidence-based set of practical recommendations, brought together in one volume.

Through the close ethnographic examination of case studies drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, Marriage in Past, Present and Future Tense places new and changing forms of marriage in comparative perspective as a transforming and also transformative social institution. In conditions of widespread socio-political inequality and instability, how are the personal, the familial and the political co-produced? How do marriages encapsulate the ways in which memories of past lives, present experience and imaginaries of the future are articulated? Exploring the ways that marriage draws together and distinguishes history and biography, ritual and law, economy and politics in intimate family life, this volume examines how familial and personal relations, and the ethical judgements they enfold, inform and configure social transformation. Contexts that have been partly shaped through civil wars, cold war and colonialism – as well as other forms of violent socio-political rupture – offer especially apt opportunities for tracing the interplay between marriage and politics. But rather than taking intimate family life and gendered practice as simply responsive to wider socio-political forces, this work explores how marriage may also create social change. Book excerpt: William Kingdon Clifford published the paper defining his "geometric algebras" in 1878, the year before his death. Clifford algebra is a generalisation to n-dimensional space of quaternions, which Hamilton used to represent scalars and vectors in real three-space: it is also a development of Grassmann's algebra, incorporating in the fundamental relations inner products defined in terms of the metric of the space. It is a strange fact that the Gibbs Heaviside vector techniques came to dominate in scientific and technical literature, while quaternions and Clifford algebras, the true associative algebras of inner-product spaces, were regarded for nearly a century simply as interesting mathematical curiosities. During this period, Pauli, Dirac and Majorana used the algebras which bear their names to describe properties of elementary particles, their spin in particular. It seems likely that none of these eminent mathematical physicists realised that they were using Clifford algebras. A few research workers such as Fueter realised the power of this algebraic scheme, but the subject only began to be appreciated more widely after the publication of Chevalley's book, 'The Algebraic Theory of Spinors' in 1954, and of Marcel Riesz' Maryland Lectures in 1959. Some of the contributors to this volume, Georges Deschamps, Erik Folke Bolinder, Albert Crumeyrolle and David Hestenes were working in this field around that time, and in their turn have persuaded others of the importance of the subject.
