Les Recommandations canadiennes pour la qualité des eaux en vue de protéger la vie aquatique (RCQE-PVA) fixent, pour certaines substances et divers paramètres (comme le pH et la température) de la colonne d'eau, des limites autorisées à l'échelle nationale telles que les plantes et les animaux aquatiques ne subissent aucun effet toxique négatif. Les recommandations font partie d'un ensemble d'outils de gestion élaborés pour faire en sorte que les pressions humaines, particulièrement l'introduction de substances toxiques, n'entraînent pas de dégradation des eaux douces et salées du Canada.
