Book excerpt: An Engraved Landscape is a contextual analysis of a substantial new corpus of engravings from the Wadi al-Ajal, situated in the Central Saharan region of south west Libya. The wadi is renowned as the heartland of the Garamantian civilization, which emerged from local mobile Pastoral communities in the 1st millennium BC, and dominated trans-Saharan trade and politics for over a thousand years. Extensive archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations in recent years have provided detailed insight into the later prehistory and protohistory of the wadi and surrounding areas. However, prior to the fieldwork detailed in this work, only a handful of carvings had been recorded in the wadi. This work is based on systematic survey, conducted between 2004 and 2009, which recorded around 2,500 previously unknown or unpublished engraved and inscribed rock surfaces. All forms of engraving, whether figurative or surface markings, were viewed as significant residues of human interaction with the rock surface and were recorded. The resulting database provides an opportunity to analyze the engravings in relation to their changing physical and cultural contexts, and the discussion offers a fresh interpretation of Saharan rock art based on this substantial new evidence. An Engraved Landscape also captures in detail a unique heritage resource that is currently inaccessible and threatened. This record of the fragile engravings provides an important source of information for researchers and students.

Tracing the historical foundations of the current legal framework, the work closely examines three factors that heavily informed the cultural heritage debate since the late eighteenth century: the rise of the encyclopaedic museum, the development of archaeology as a science, and the appropriation of objects in the context of armed conflict and colonialism. Each of these explorations is enriched by examples from around the globe and assessed on the international, national, and local level. Subjecting contested objects -such as the Parthenon Sculptures, those from the Yuanmingyuan Palace, the Benin artifacts, looted archaeological artefacts and human remains, and artwork stolen during the Holocaust - to this holistic approach enables a contextualisation of the unique history of appropriation of these objects. Unfortunately the study of gravestone motifs has been largely ignored by those transcribing data in Ontario's early cemeteries. It is imperative this information, along with motifs, be recorded before it is lost to us. Gravestone iconography can be organized into simple stylistic categories which would allow for a standardized approach when recording gravestone information. Much of Ontario's gravestone research is done by local genealogical and historical societies working in isolation. Sharing gravestone data using a common classification system would aid in developing perspectives into topics such as carving traditions, economic status and gravestone choice across local and regional lines. This information would shed light on the entire gravestone industry and provide researchers with the background necessary to study motifs more closely.
