Download or read book Teaching French Grammar in Context written by Stacey Katz Bourns and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Something needs to be done about grammar.” Katz and Blyth have written this book with the hope of changing the way French instructors teach and conceive of grammar. Intended to help teachers and teacher trainers develop an understanding of French discourse that is grounded in recent theoretical and sociolinguistic research, this book is devoted to informing teachers-in-training, as well as experienced teachers, about cutting-edge methods for teaching grammar. It also describes the grammatical features of the French language in its social context. At the same time, it provides suggestions for applying such abstract knowledge in practical pedagogical ways, for example, how to structure grammatical explanations, devise classroom activities, and take advantage of resources that give students greater exposure to French as it is truly used in various discourse environments.
Download or read book D passer le cadre national des Lieux de m moire written by Benoît Majerus and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book The Theory of the Moir Phenomenon written by Isaac Amidror and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published several new developments have been made in the field of the moiré theory. The most important of these concern new results that have recently been obtained on moiré effects between correlated aperiodic (or random) structures, a subject that was completely absent in the first edition, and which appears now for the first time in a second, separate volume. This also explains the change in the title of the present volume, which now includes the subtitle “Volume I: Periodic Layers”. This subtitle has been added to clearly distinguish the present volume from its new companion, which is subtitled “Volume II: Aperiodic Layers”. It should be noted, however, that the new subtitle of the present volume may be somewhat misleading, since this book also treats (in Chapters 10 and 11) moiré effects between repetitive layers, which are, in fact, geometric transformations of periodic layers, that are generally no longer periodic in themselves. The most suitable subtitle for the present volume would therefore have been “Periodic or Repetitive Layers”, but in the end we have decided on the shorter version.

Download or read book The Theory of the Moir Phenomenon written by Isaac Amidror and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has not noticed, on one o~casion or another, those intriguing geometric patterns which appear at the intersection Of repetitive structures such as two far picket fences on a hill, the railings on both sides of a bridge, superposed layers of fabric, or folds of a nylon curtain? This fascinating phenomenon, known as the moire effect, has found useful applications in several fields of science and technology, such as metrology, strain analysis or even document authentication and anti-counterfeiting. However, in other situations moire patterns may have an unwanted, adverse effect. This is the case in the printing world, and, in particular, in the field of colour reproduction: moire patterns which may be caused by the dot-screens used for colour printing may severely deteriorate the image quality and tum into a real printer's nightmare. The starting point of the work on which this book is based was, indeed, in the research of moire phenomena in the context of the colour printing process. The initial aim of this research was to understand the nature and the causes of the superposition moire patterns between regular screens in order to find how to avoid, or at least minimize, their adverse effect on colour printing. This interesting research led us, after all, to a much more far reaching mathematical understanding of the moire phenomenon, whose interest stands in its own right, independently of any particular application.

Download or read book Experimental Mechanics of Solids written by Cesar A. Sciammarella and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental solid mechanics is the study of materials to determine their physical properties. This study might include performing a stress analysis or measuring the extent of displacement, shape, strain and stress which a material suffers under controlled conditions. In the last few years there have been remarkable developments in experimental techniques that measure shape, displacement and strains and these sorts of experiments are increasingly conducted using computational techniques. Experimental Mechanics of Solids is a comprehensive introduction to the topics, technologies and methods of experimental mechanics of solids. It begins by establishing the fundamentals of continuum mechanics, explaining key areas such as the equations used, stresses and strains, and two and three dimensional problems. Having laid down the foundations of the topic, the book then moves on to look at specific techniques and technologies with emphasis on the most recent developments such as optics and image processing. Most of the current computational methods, as well as practical ones, are included to ensure that the book provides information essential to the reader in practical or research applications. Key features: Presents widely used and accepted methodologies that are based on research and development work of the lead author Systematically works through the topics and theories of experimental mechanics including detailed treatments of the Moire, Speckle and holographic optical methods Includes illustrations and diagrams to illuminate the topic clearly for the reader Provides a comprehensive introduction to the topic, and also acts as a quick reference guide This comprehensive book forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and is also a point of reference for researchers and practitioners in structural and materials engineering.

Download or read book Pre text Text Context written by Robert L. Mitchell and published by Columbus : Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century in France is a nightmare for literary historians. Their thirst for categorization is more easily quenched by prior centuries, to which, because they seem unified by cohesive preoccupations and common goals, such appellations as the Renaissance, the Classical Age or le grand siècle, and the Enlightenment or Age of Ideas are appropriately applied. For the protean nineteenth century, for which no such handy tag has been or can be devised, is beyond all else distinguished by extreme heterogeneity and eclecticism. A period of chaotic social and political instability, of scientific and industrial revolution, it is, in literature, a time, not of solidarity, but of unprecedented individualism. Collective social consciousness yields to isolated probings into the uncharted recesses of the human mind and soul, and revolt agains standardized (even valorized) literary practice is seen in such developments as the slow undermining of the "accepted" literary lexicon, and of the qualities of unity, clarity, and reason, and in a radical overhauling of the system of prosody. If such diversity precludes coherence in nineteenth-century French literature, it can itself be recognized as the 2organizing3 element of this literary epoch. And it is precisely this paradox that the essays in this volume intend to reflect. They are not unified, as orthodoxy might dictate, by a common approach or theme or author. Rather they are marked, as was the century that is their context, by divergence and variety, not harmony and consistency. Multiformity in theme is reflected in discussions of such varied topics as pygmalionism, allegory, mirage, self-consciousness, plagiarism, madness, feminism, the grotesque, dance, and alchemy, which are addressed, in turn, from a variety of critical approaches: thematic, intertextual, historical, stylistic, psychocritical, sociological, and semiotic. Ecclecticism, indeed, has shaped the basic conception of the collection. Part 1 examines themes, presented as "pretext", that inform either authorial motivation or the orientation of a text prior to its actual inscription. Part 2 approaches the process of writing from the perspective of the text itself. And Part 3 is concerned with those spatial, temporal, and linguistic elements (context) that surround the literary text.
