La capacité de la mémoire de travail augmente durant l'enfance et diminue au cours du vieillissement mais la distinction entre le rappel des informations verbales et visuo-spatiales est présente aux différentes étapes du cycle de vie.

We can mentally represent the visual form of objects. We can extract information from several of the senses as to the location of objects in relation to ourselves and to other objects nearby. For some of those objects we can reach out and manipulate them. We can also imagine ourselves manipulating objects in advance of doing so, or even when it would be impossible to do so physically. The problem posed to science is how these cognitive operations are accomplished, and proffered accounts lie in two essentially parallel research endeavours, working memory and imagery. Working memory is thought to pervade everyday cognition, to provide on-line processing and temporary storage, and to update, moment to moment, our representation of the current state of our environment and our interactions with that environment. There is now a strong case for the claims of working memory in the area of phonological and articulatory functions, all of which appear to contribute to everyday activities such as counting, arithmetic, vocabulary acquisition, and some aspects of reading and language comprehension. The claims for visual and spatial working memory functions are less convincing. Most notable has been the assumption that visual and spatial working memory are intimately involved in the generation, retention and manipulations of visual images. There has until recently been little hard evidence to justify that assumption, and the research on visual and spatial working memory has focused on a relatively restricted range of imagery tasks and phenomena. In a more or less independent development, the literature on visual imagery has now amassed a voluminous corpus of data and theory about a wide range of imagery phenomena. Despite this, few books on imagery refer to the concept of working memory in any detail, or specify the nature of the working memory system that might be involved in mental imagery. This essay follows a line of reconciliation and positive critiquing in exploring the possible overlap between mental imagery and working memory. Theoretical development in the book draws on data from both cognitive psychology and cognitive neuropsychology. The aim is to stimulate debate, to address directly a number of assumptions that hitherto have been implicit, and to assess the contribution of the concept of working memory to our understanding of these intriguing core aspects of human cognition.

Book excerpt: Nos travaux ont eu pour objectif de mieux comprendre quelles étaient les fonctions attentionnelles et de mémoire de travail visuo-spatiales spécifiquement atteintes au cours du vieillissement normal (VN) ainsi qu’aux stades précoces de la maladie de Parkinson (MP) et de la maladie d’Alzheimer (MA). Nous avons d’abord développé puis validé chez des sujets jeunes sains, une nouvelle approche utilisant l’oculomotricité permettant d’évaluer ces fonctions tout en tenant compte du niveau socio-culturel. De plus, nous appuyant sur des analyses en composantes principales pour comparer les performances obtenues à nos tâches d’empans oculomoteurs à celles obtenues lors de tests classiques de neuropsychologie, nous avons pu révéler les stratégies cognitives mises en jeu par les sujets. Dans une deuxième étude, cette approche a permis de préciser que les déficits des sujets âgés sains touchent essentiellement la mémoire de travail (verbale et spatiale), les capacités d’inhibition et l’attention divisée. Par ailleurs, les sujets âgés ont tendance à faire intervenir, en même temps, la plupart de leurs ressources attentionnelles et mnésiques, signe de la mise en place de processus de compensation. Notre troisième étude 1) souligne à nouveau la présence de troubles attentionnels et de mémoire de travail dès les stades précoces de la MA et de la MP, avec prédominance de perturbations visuo-spatiales dans la MP ; 2) révèle que, pour un même niveau d’atteinte cognitive globale, les capacités attentionnelles et de mémoire de travail spatiales des patients MP sont beaucoup plus réduites que celles des patients MA et les stratégies mises en jeu diffèrent selon le groupe considéré.

Enfin, le mode de présentation simultané et la nature visuelle de l'information à encoder du Visual Patterns Test peuvent rendre compte de l'effet de l'âge plus prononcé sur les capacités de stockage visuel dans la mesure où ces caractéristiques semblent requerir plus de processus auto-initiés que celles de la tâche des blocs de Corsi.

Nous avons effectué 7 expériences auprès de sujets normaux (jeunes te âgés) avec lesquelles nous avons testé l'influence de plusieurs facteurs expérimentaux, tels que le nombre et les types d'items, la durée d'encodage et le délai de maintien, le contexte spatial, le mode de représentation séquentielle et simultanée et l'exécution de tâches interférentes... sur les performances mnésiques de relocalisation; Nous nous sommes appuyés sur le modèle de Postma, Kessels et Van Asselen (2004) qui considère que la tâche de relocalisation d'items identiques ferait intervenir principalement les processus mnésiques spatiaux tandis que la tâche de relocalisation d'items différents (objets) solliciterait à la fois les processus mnésiques spatiaux, les processus mnésiques visuels et un processus d'intégration combinant l'information spatiale à l'information visuelle ("spatial + identité visuelle"). Les résultats confirment l'hypothèse de Postma et al. (2004) et montrent une influence essentielle du nombre et du type d'items, ainsi que de l'âge des participants sur les performances mnésiques de relocalisation. Ces recherches soulignent la nécessité d'une approche multifactorielle de l'étude de la mémoire visuo-spatiale afin de pouvoir questionner et améliorer les modèles théoriques proposés.

Lorsqu'un parcours est décrit au sein d'un environnement, la perspective est dite "en trajet". En revanche, la perspective "survol" implique de prendre un point de vue surélevé sur l'environnement, comme sur une carte géographique. Les caractéristiques de ces deux perspectives sont si différentes qu'elles conditionnent les modalités d'accès aux informations sur l'environnement. Nous avons mené une série d'expériences afin de déterminer, d'une part, si la perspective était incorporée dans les représentations spatiales et, d'autre part, si la mémoire de travail était impliquée de façon distincte dans la mémorisation des descriptions selon la perspective. Cette étude a ainsi porté sur des instructions directionnelles qui, en perspective trajet, prenaient la forme de descriptions d'itinéraires, et en perspective survol, prenaient la forme de descriptions de localisations relatives. Le rappel des deux composantes principales a été distingué: les repères (le cinéma, la boulangerie, etc.) et les directions (à gauche, à droite, etc.). Des tâches interférentes spatiales, visuelles et verbales, ont été appliquées afin de mettre en évidence le rôle des composantes de la mémoire de travail dans la formation des représentations spatiales. Nous avons pu confirmer que la mémoire de travail était largement impliquée dans le traitement et la mémorisation des descriptions. Bien que les textes aient été présentés dans la modalité verbale, la composante visuo-spatiale de la mémoire de travail s'avère être fortement impliquée. Enfin, la manipulation de la perspective n'a pas permis d'influencer de façon majeure les processus cognitifs mis en œuvre dans la formation des représentations spatiales. Le traitement des repères, notamment, pourrait avoir été influencé avant tout par les stratégies individuelles plutôt que par la perspective.

Book excerpt: As a cognitive neuropsychologist, Tim Shallice considers the general question of what can be learned about the operation of the normal cognitive system from the study of the cognitive difficulties arising from neurological damage and disease. He distinguishes two types of theories of normal function - primarily modular and primary non-modular - and argues that the problems of making valid inferences about normal function from studies of brain-damaged subjects are more severe for the latter. He first analyzes five well-researched areas in which some modularity can be assumed: short-term memory, reading, writing, visual perception, and the relation between input and output language processing. His aim is to introduce the methods about normal function mirror ones derived directly from studies of normal subjects and indeed at times preceded them. He then more theoretically examines these inferences, from group studies and individual case studies to modular and non-modular systems. Finally, he considers five areas where theories of normal function are relatively undeveloped and neuropsychology provides counterintuitive phenomena and guides to theory-building: the organization of semantic systems, visual attention, concentration and will, episodic memory, and consciousness.

However, the literature cannot explain whether individuals with ID perform according to their developmental level or not. The studies in this thesis investigated if life experience could be a contributing factor to the diversity seen in the literature. Planning performance can be improved by either using external or internal support. Assistive technology for cognition (ATC) is an example of external support. This thesis investigated how the ATC is being used in an everyday planning situation which has not been investigated before. Furthermore, this thesis explored whether the internal supports of cognitive abilities and life experience correlate with planning ability in adolescents with ID, and if planning ability can be trained using a cognitive training program for everyday planning. Results showed that ATC supported cognitive functions, but that the children did not formulate the plans themselves. Furthermore, the results support the difference model of ID since planning correlated with different cognitive measures and life experience in adolescents with ID compared to children with a typical development. Adolescents with ID got better at the planning tasks in the training program, however, no transfer effects to untrained planning tasks were found. To conclude, the planning was supported by external and internal support. However, ATC needs to be designed and prescribed in a way that increases independence. Practitioners should actively support in training planning and should be cautious when introducing cognitive interventions if the transfer gap is too large. Barn och ungdomar med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning (IF) har svårt med sina exekutiva funktioner och dagliga planeringsuppgifter. Litteraturen kan dock inte förklara om individer med IF presterar enligt deras utvecklingsnivå eller inte. Studierna i denna avhandling undersökte om livserfarenhet kan vara en bidragande faktor till varför denna skillnad ses i litteraturen. Planeringsförmågan kan förbättras genom att använda externt eller internt stöd. Hjälpteknik för kognition (HM-K) är ett exempel på externt stöd. Denna avhandling undersökte hur HM-K används i en vardaglig planeringssituation vilket inte har undersökts tidigare. Vidare undersökte denna avhandling om de interna stöden för kognitiva förmågor och livserfarenhet korrelerar med planeringsförmåga hos ungdomar med IF, och om planeringsförmåga kan förbättras med hjälp av ett kognitivt träningsprogram för vardagsplanering. Resultaten visade att HM-K stödde kognitiva funktioner, men att barnen inte formulerade planerna själva. Vidare stöder resultaten skillnadsmodellen för IF eftersom planering korrelerade med olika kognitiva mått och livserfarenhet hos ungdomar med IF jämfört med barn med en typisk utveckling. Ungdomar med IF blev bättre på planeringsuppgifterna i träningsprogrammet, men inga överföringseffekter till otränade planeringsuppgifter hittades. Avslutningsvis så stöds planeringen av externa och interna stöd. HM-K måste dock utformas och förskrivas på ett sätt som ökar självständighet. Praktiker bör aktivt stödja träning av planering och bör vara försiktiga när de inför kognitiva insatser om överföringsgapet är för stort.
