Download or read book Analyzing Adventure Time written by Paul A. Thomas and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, Cartoon Network debuted a new animated series called Adventure Time, and within just a few short years the show became both a pop culture phenomenon and a critical darling. But despite all the admiration, not many works of scholarship have assessed the show through a critical lens. This anthology is an attempt to fill this scholarly oversight and spark a wider conversation about the show's deeper themes. Across 15 scholarly essays, this book's contributors study Adventure Time from a variety of angles, proving just how insightful the series really is. From a consideration of BMO's queer identity to a psychoanalytic reading of Lemongrab and an examination of how anime has impacted the show, the topics explored in this anthology are diverse and unique and are likely to appeal to scholars and fans alike.
Download or read book The Naval Miscellany written by Susan Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventh volume of Naval Miscellany contains documents which range in date from the late thirteenth century to the Korean War. They illustrate the many different ways in which the naval forces of the crown have served the realm. Topics covered include the role of ships in campaigns against Scotland under Edward I and Edward VI, the protection of the Iceland fishery in the days of the Commonwealth government, and the operation of prize courts during the wars against France in the eighteenth century. Moving on to the nineteenth century, the supply of timber to the Royal Navy is examined, while two contributions deal with surveying off the west coast of Africa and another prints a diary kept by a member of the Naval Brigade operating onshore in the Zulu War. The most recent contributions deal with the origins and development of the Royal Australian Navy up to the 1950s. Two more controversial subjects are also included; the first gives more information about the storage of cordite on battle cruisers in 1916 and the battle of Jutland; the second documents the relief of Admiral North from Gibraltar in 1940. There is something here for every enthusiast for naval history and for all students of the relevant periods.

Download or read book Armada written by Colin Martin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 869 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the Spanish Armada, lavishly illustrated and fully revised “Will surely become the definitive account.”—Stephen Brumwell, Wall Street Journal In July 1588 the Spanish Armada sailed from Corunna to conquer England. Three weeks later an English fireship attack in the Channel—and then a fierce naval battle—foiled the planned invasion. Many myths still surround these events. The genius of Sir Francis Drake is exalted, while Spain’s efforts are belittled. But what really happened during that fateful encounter? Drawing on archives from around the world, Colin Martin and Geoffrey Parker also deploy vital new evidence from Armada shipwrecks off the coasts of Ireland and Scotland. Their gripping, beautifully illustrated account provides a fresh understanding of how the rival fleets came into being; how they looked, sounded, and smelled; and what happened when they finally clashed. Looking beyond the events of 1588 to the complex politics which made war between England and Spain inevitable, and at the political and dynastic aftermath, Armada deconstructs the many legends to reveal why, ultimately, the bold Spanish mission failed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bank of Montreal is not only Canada's first bank: it has also occupied a prominent place in the pantheon of Canadian nation building. Whom Fortune Favours examines the trajectory of this extraordinary organization across the span of two centuries. The historian Laurence Mussio applies an analytical lens to a financial institution whose strategies fundamentally shaped, and were shaped by, the evolution of a country and a continent. The Bank of Montreal (BMO) represents an extremely rare institution, one that has both endured and adapted to fundamental change. The depth and breadth of the Bank's history offer a unique opportunity to analyze a singular organization over ten generations. As an institution, BMO played a critical part in the destiny of its home city and in the emergence of Canada on an international scene. Crucial to the development of Canadian and North American financial systems, BMO shaped the political economy of banking. Over the last half century, the institution's response to successive economic, technological, demographic, and regulatory shifts illustrates how Canadian and North American finance has adapted to the challenges before it. At its heart, Whom Fortune Favours presents a multifaceted story about the making of contemporary finance. This epic chronicle is the result of a massive research effort incorporating thousands of never-before-released internal documents. Mussio's accessible narrative will appeal to both scholars and executives who seek to understand the origins, development, and present-day implications of one of North America's great institutions.
