Book The House of Serenos Part I

Download or read book The House of Serenos Part I written by Clementina Caputo and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive archaeological study of the ceramic finds from a house in Amheida The House of Serenos: Part I: The Pottery (Amheida V) is a comprehensive full-color catalog and analysis of the ceramic finds from the late antique house of a local notable and adjacent streets in Amheida. It is the fifth book in the Amheida series. Amheida is located in the western part of the Dakhla oasis, 3.5 km south of the medieval town of El-Qasr. Known in Hellenistic and Roman times as Trimithis, Amheida became a polis by 304 CE and was a major administrative center of the western part of the oasis for the whole of the fourth century. The home’s owner was one Serenos, a member of the municipal elite and a Trimithis city councillor, as we know from documents found in the house. His house is particularly well preserved with respect to floor plan, relationship to the contemporary urban topography, and decoration, including domestic display spaces plastered and painted with subjects drawn from Greek mythology and scenes depicting the family that owned the house. The archaeology from the site also reveals the ways in which the urban space changed over time, as Serenos’s house was built over and expanded into some previously public spaces. The house was probably abandoned around or soon after 370 CE. The pottery analyzed in this volume helps to refine the relationship of the archaeological layers belonging to the élite house and the layers below it; it also sheds light on the domestic and economic life of the household and region, from cooking and dining to the management of a complex agricultural economy in which ceramics were the most common form of container for basic commodities. The book will be of interest to specialists interested in ceramology, Roman Egypt, and the material culture, social history, and economy of late antiquity.

Book Syntactic and Lexico semantic Aspects of the Legal Register in Ramesside Royal Decrees

This book was released on 2006 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the legal register of a corpus of some fifty Ramesside royal decrees dating from 1300 to 1100 B.C. in the wider context of forensic discourse analysis of the legislative genre, in an attempt to establish constants in forensic linguistics that span time and space. The general character and formulation of these normative documents reveal a remarkable homogeneity and represent a specific linguistic register that has a common textemic, pragmatic, and narratologic structure, as well as a coherent syntactic and lexico-semantic usage, as modern legal dialects do today. Furthermore, the research tries to enrich the understanding of Egyptian legal terminology and legal categories by a systematic semantic analysis of the classifiers used in the legal lexicon (classifiers in the hieroglyphic system represent iconic elements that have no phonetic value, but assign words to semantic classes). The extremely interesting Egyptian graphic categorization set of classifiers present in these texts offers some invaluable insights into the Egyptian conceptual organization system.

Download or read book Akhenaten written by Ronald T. Ridley and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking historiography of the reign of Akhenaten More ink has probably been spilled on Akhenaten and his times (‘the Amarna Period’) than any other figure from ancient Egypt, with a vast range of interpretations and theories that can leave the uninitiated utterly bewildered. Against this background, Akhenaten: A Historian’s View examines what scholars have said over the years regarding key aspects of the period, to produce a ‘history of histories,’ exploring exactly how various chains of arguments were arrived at—and how houses of cards thus erected have subsequently come tumbling down. In particular, it teases out ideas based on solid documentation from those based on theory and fancy, and tracks ways in which new evidence became available, how it was interpreted, and how it fed—or didn't—into the big picture. This book thus fills a major gap in the literature of the Amarna Period and also contributes to the wider, and much neglected, field of the historiography of ancient Egypt.
