This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Complexity of Psychiatric Care from Pregnancy to Adolescence Beyond the Endogenous Exogenous Dichotomy

Download or read book The Complexity of Psychiatric Care from Pregnancy to Adolescence Beyond the Endogenous Exogenous Dichotomy written by Olivier Putois and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child and adolescent psychiatry hosts a range of diverse epistemological positions regarding the origin of psychical suffering, from fully endogenous (e.g. genetic) to mostly exogenous (e.g. family trauma, etc.). The complexity of clinical situations generally precludes such epistemologies to require exclusive therapeutic strategies: psychodynamic psychotherapy can be fruitful in the context of monogenic genetic illnesses (at the family or individual level), while pharmacology can be a necessary tool in a variety of difficult relational contexts or personality issues (e.g. in adolescence). Thus nowadays, the most promising therapeutic perspectives in child and adolescent psychiatry attempt to do justice to the polyfactorial complexity of mental suffering (notably by refining their psychopathologies), by drawing on e.g. biopsychosocial or epigenetic models – even more so as prevention policies ask for longitudinal studies to help with the early detection of potential future troubles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION SHORTLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE FOR POLITICAL WRITING "This is what journalism is for." —Observer Time to Think goes behind the headlines to reveal the truth about the collapse of the world's largest gender service for children." Are we hurting children?" That's the core question at the heart of Time to Think, which exposes the truth about the rise and fall of the United Kingdom's flagship gender identity clinic for children. Answering in the affirmative, it exposes how ideology triumphed over evidence within this part of the healthcare system. In the process, child safeguarding was overlooked and pediatric patients were medically harmed. As investigative journalist Hannah Barnes reveals, the Tavistock's Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) was set up initially to provide talking therapies to young people who were questioning their gender identity. But in a little over a decade, it referred around two thousand children, some as young as nine years old, for medication to block their puberty. In the same period, with ever-greater numbers of children in need of treatment, the profile of the patients changed from largely pre-pubescent boys to mostly adolescent girls, who were often contending with other medical and psychological difficulties. GIDS was shut down by English health authorities in March 2024 and new services will not be able to prescribe these profound medical interventions. Yet, GIDS's approach to treating children with gender identity distress was, in fact, more cautious than that observed in other countries— including, notably, in the United States. This urgent, scrupulous and dramatic book explains how GIDS was the site of a serious medical scandal. As this scandal continues to unfold and even accelerate within other institutions and across countries, it is a gripping parable and disturbing cautionary tale for our times.

Book Culture and Conflict in Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Download or read book Culture and Conflict in Child and Adolescent Mental Health written by M. Elena Garralda and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, part of the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions' book series 'Working with Children & Adolescents, ' aims to bring up-to-date empirically derived knowledge on transcultural themes as they affect child and adolescent mental adjustment, to assist those seeking to understand and ameliorate the mental health problems of children and young people. The contributors represent expert views supported by empirical and clinical experiences. They address first general transcultural issues of relevance for child mental health (i.e. political turmoil, the effects of stigma, anthropological considerations, international adoptions, and the adjustment of specific immigrant groups); secondly, cultural aspects of specific child and adolescent mental health disorders. Thirdly, it covers the training of professionals in transcultural child psychiatry and setting up temporary interventions in war and conflict areas.

Book excerpt: Among Others: Blackness at MoMA begins with an essay that provides a rigorous and in-depth analysis of MoMA's history regarding racial issues. It also calls for further developments, leaving space for other scholars to draw on particular moments of that history. It takes an integrated approach to the study of racial blackness and its representation: the book stresses inclusion and, as such, the plate section, rather than isolating black artists, features works by non-black artists dealing with race and race- related subjects. As a collection book, the volume provides scholars and curators with information about the Museum's holdings, at times disclosing works that have been little documented or exhibited. The numerous and high-quality illustrations will appeal to anyone interested in art made by black artists, or in modern art in general.

Book Juvenile Justice in Europe

Download or read book Juvenile Justice in Europe written by Barry Goldson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when Europe is witnessing major cultural, social, economic and political challenges and transformations, this book brings together leading researchers and experts to consider a range of pressing questions relating to the historical origins, contemporary manifestations and future prospects for juvenile justice. Questions considered include: How has the history of juvenile justice evolved across Europe and how might the past help us to understand the present and signal the future? What do we know about contemporary juvenile crime trends in Europe and how are nation states responding? Is punitivity and intolerance eclipsing child welfare and pedagogical imperatives, or is ‘child-friendly justice’ holding firm? How might we best understand both the convergent and the divergent patterning of juvenile justice in a changing and reformulating Europe? How is juvenile justice experienced by identifiable constituencies of children and young people both in communities and in institutions? What impacts are sweeping austerity measures, together with increasing mobilities and migrations, imposing? How can comparative juvenile justice be conceptualised and interpreted? What might the future hold for juvenile justice in Europe at a time of profound uncertainty and flux? This book is essential reading for students, tutors and researchers in the fields of criminology, history, law, social policy and sociology, particularly those engaged with childhood and youth studies, human rights, comparative juvenile/youth justice, youth crime and delinquency and criminal justice policy in Europe.
