Mechanics deals with the objective laws of mechanical motion of bodies, the simplest form of motion. In the study of a science of nature, mathematics plays an important rôle. Mechanics is the first science of nature which has been expressed in terms of mathematics, by considering various mathematical models, associated to phenomena of the surrounding nature. Thus, its development was influenced by the use of a strong mathematical tool. As it was already seen in the first two volumes of the present book, its guideline is precisely the mathematical model of mechanics. The classical models which we refer to are in fact models based on the Newtonian model of mechanics, that is on its five principles, i.e.: the inertia, the forces action, the action and reaction, the independence of the forces action and the initial conditions principle, respectively. Other models, e.g., the model of attraction forces between the particles of a discrete mechanical system, are part of the considered Newtonian model. Kepler’s laws brilliantly verify this model in case of velocities much smaller then the light velocity in vacuum.

These results have not attracted a tention in proportion to their importance, partly because they have been overshadowed by KAM theory, and partly because they remain widely scattered - and often untranslated - throughout the Russian literature. The present book seeks to remedy that situation by providing a summary, including proofs, of averaging and related techniques for single and multiphase systems of ODE's. The first part of the book surveys most of what is known in the general case and examines the role of ergodicity in averaging. Stronger stability results are then obtained for the special case of Hamiltonian systems, and the relation of these results to KAM Theory is discussed. Finally, in view of their close relation to averaging methods, both classical and quantum adiabatic theorems are considered at some length. With the inclusion of nine concise appendices, the book is very nearly self-contained, and should serve the needs of both physicists desiring an accessible summary of known results, and of mathematicians seeing an introduction to current areas of research in averaging.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Painleve Transcendents, their Asymp totics and Physical Applications", held at the Alpine Inn in Sainte-Adele, near Montreal, September 2 -7, 1990, brought together a group of experts to discuss the topic and produce this volume. There were 41 participants from 14 countries and 27 lectures were presented, all included in this volume. The speakers presented reviews of topics to which they themselves have made important contributions and also re sults of new original research. The result is a volume which, though multiauthored, has the character of a monograph on a single topic. This is the theory of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, the solutions of which have no movable singularities, other than poles, and the extension of this theory to partial differential equations. For short we shall call such systems "equations with the Painleve property". The search for such equations was a very topical mathematical problem in the 19th century. Early work concentrated on first order differential equations. One of Painleve's important contributions in this field was to develop simple methods applicable to higher order equations. In particular these methods made possible a complete analysis of the equation ;; = f(y',y,x), where f is a rational function of y' and y, with coefficients that are analytic in x. Book excerpt: This book describes, by using elementary techniques, how some geometrical structures widely used today in many areas of physics, like symplectic, Poisson, Lagrangian, Hermitian, etc., emerge from dynamics. It is assumed that what can be accessed in actual experiences when studying a given system is just its dynamical behavior that is described by using a family of variables ("observables" of the system). The book departs from the principle that ''dynamics is first'' and then tries to answer in what sense the sole dynamics determines the geometrical structures that have proved so useful to describe the dynamics in so many important instances. In this vein it is shown that most of the geometrical structures that are used in the standard presentations of classical dynamics (Jacobi, Poisson, symplectic, Hamiltonian, Lagrangian) are determined, though in general not uniquely, by the dynamics alone. The same program is accomplished for the geometrical structures relevant to describe quantum dynamics. Finally, it is shown that further properties that allow the explicit description of the dynamics of certain dynamical systems, like integrability and super integrability, are deeply related to the previous development and will be covered in the last part of the book. The mathematical framework used to present the previous program is kept to an elementary level throughout the text, indicating where more advanced notions will be needed to proceed further. A family of relevant examples is discussed at length and the necessary ideas from geometry are elaborated along the text. However no effort is made to present an ''all-inclusive'' introduction to differential geometry as many other books already exist on the market doing exactly that. However, the development of the previous program, considered as the posing and solution of a generalized inverse problem for geometry, leads to new ways of thinking and relating some of the most conspicuous geometrical structures appearing in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics.

The meeting was held at Villard-de-Lans (near Grenoble, France) from 19th to 22 nd June 1979. The Colloquium considered mechanical aspects of the anisotropy of solids, both initial and induced by permanent deformation, anisotropic hardening and damage, oriented fissuration, etc. Topics concerned mathematical, experimental and engineering aspects of the anisotropy of metals, composites, soils and rocks. The aim of the Colloquium was to bring together experimentalists, theoretecians and engineers interested in various features of mechanical anisotropy, in order to permit an interdisciplinary exchange of understanding, experience and methods. A detailed description of the scope, aim and proposed topics is contained in the Preface. The announcement of the Colloquium attracted a large number of sub mitted contributions. Conforming with the principles of Euromech Colloquia and of the Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, the accepted contributions were limited to 50 communications. A general description of the scientific program is to be found in the Preface. Five general lectures gave state-of-the-art reports concerning some areas of the behavior of anisotropic solids; the 50 communications were divided into 12 sessions dealing with specific topics (see "Contents").
