Book Fluid Dynamics in Complex Fractured Porous Systems

Download or read book Fluid Dynamics in Complex Fractured Porous Systems written by Boris Faybishenko and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite of many years of studies, predicting fluid flow, heat, and chemical transport in fractured-porous media remains a challenge for scientists and engineers worldwide. This monograph is the third in a series on the dynamics of fluids and transport in fractured rock published by the American Geophysical Union (Geophysical Monograph Series, Vol. 162, 2005; and Geophysical Monograph, No. 122, 2000). This monograph is dedicated to the late Dr. Paul Witherspoon for his seminal influence on the development of ideas and methodologies and the birth of contemporary fractured rock hydrogeology, including such fundamental and applied problems as environmental remediation; exploitation of oil, gas, and geothermal resources; disposal of spent nuclear fuel; and geotechnical engineering. This monograph addresses fundamental and applied scientific questions and is intended to assist scientists and practitioners bridge gaps in the current scientific knowledge in the areas of theoretical fluids dynamics, field measurements, and experiments for different practical applications. Readers of this book will include researchers, engineers, and professionals within academia, Federal agencies, and industry, as well as graduate/undergraduate students involved in theoretical, experimental, and numerical modeling studies of fluid dynamics and reactive chemical transport in the unsaturated and saturated zones, including studies pertaining to petroleum and geothermal reservoirs, environmental management and remediation, mining, gas storage, and radioactive waste isolation in underground repositories. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: Fundamentals of using a complex systems approach to describe flow and transport in fractured-porous media. Methods of Field Measurements and Experiments Collective behavior and emergent properties of complex fractured rock systems Connection to the surrounding environment Multi-disciplinary research for different applications

Book A Survey and Discussion of Lysimeters and a Bibliography on Their Construction and Performance

Download or read book A Survey and Discussion of Lysimeters and a Bibliography on Their Construction and Performance written by Helmut Kohnke and published by . This book was released on 1940 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the great impetus that soil conservation and flood-control work have given to the study of the relations of water to soil, lysimeters have received wider attention during the past decade than at any previous time. They have been used for at least two and a half centuries in studies of the percolation of water through the soil. The purpose of such studies may be strictly hydrological, attention being given only to the rate and amount of the percolate. In most of the more recent investigations the chemical composition of the percolate is analyzed, generally as a part of the study of the fertility balance of the soil, but, in some cases in connection with studies of the genesis and development of soils.

Book Laboratory and Field Manual on Irrigation Engineering

Download or read book Laboratory and Field Manual on Irrigation Engineering written by R.J. Patel and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The irrigation water is considered as the essential input for crop production. Over exploitation of natural water resources has caused a menace for the future human generations. The depletion of underground water table in high productivity areas and under utilization of the water resources in rain fed areas of the country, poor irrigation efficiency and high seepage losses from conveyance system, poor land development and mismanagement of the irrigation water resources has acquired alarming proportions. As the share of water for agriculture in future is going to reduce, there will be tremendous pressure to produce more per drop of water in order to meet the food and other requirements of burgeoning population of the country. The existing irrigation water resources are not utilized judiciously and their mismanagement has lead to problems like low production efficiency, salinization, water logging and degradation of land. To manage these problems and increase the production efficiency of irrigation, it is pertinent to adopt judicious methods of irrigation water use, by efficient on-farm irrigation management based on scientific approach. Therefore, a comprehensive knowledge of available soil moisture and its constants, scheduling and quality of irrigation water and proper drainage techniques is crucial. This manual on irrigation engineering is an attempt to fulfil this urgent need as it covers all major aspects of irrigation water management. Although, manual is meant primarily for the students of agricultural universities, yet it will provide valuable basic information and guide to the scientific community and field functionaries.

Book Waste Management for the Food Industries

Download or read book Waste Management for the Food Industries written by Ioannis S. Arvanitoyannis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 1096 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuously increasing human population, has resulted in a huge demand for processed and packaged foods. As a result of this demand, large amounts of water, air, electricity and fuel are consumed on a daily basis for food processing, transportation and preservation purposes. Although not one of the most heavily polluting, the food industry does contribute to the increase in volume of waste produced as well as to the energy expended to do so. For the first time, nine separate food industry categories are thoroughly investigated in Waste Management for the Food Industries in an effort to help combat this already acute problem. The current state of environmental management systems is described, offering comparisons of global legislation rarely found in other resources. An extensive review of commercial equipment, including advantages and disadvantages per employed waste management technique, offers a unique perspective for any academic, student, professional, and/or consultant in the food, agriculture and environmental industries. Thoroughly examines the most prevalent and most polluting industries such as Meat, Fish, Dairy, Olive Oil, Juice and Wine industries Includes synoptical tables [methods employed, physicochemical or microbiological parameters altered after treatment etc] and comparative figures of the effectiveness of various waste management methods Contains nearly 2500 of the most up-to-date references available
