Book excerpt: Lal Ded, Habba Khatun, Rupa Bhavani, Arnimal: these four women poets, dating from different periods in the history of Kashmir, are household names in the valley and are claimed by all, no matter what religious, ethnic or other group they belong to. In this beautiful volume, Neerja Mattoo brings their work together for the first time, placing it in two traditions, the mystic and the lyric. Fine and nuanced translations of their poems are accompanied by brief introductions to their work that place the women in a historical context and deal with both the facts and the beliefs about their work.

Book Reading Mystical Lyric

Download or read book Reading Mystical Lyric written by Fatemeh Keshavarz and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jalal al-Din Rumi, a towering figure in the Persian-speaking world, is currently the most widely published poet in English translation. Yet despite the popularity of his verse, the majority of scholarship on his work focuses not on Rumi's poetry but on his contributions as a mystic. Fatemeh Keshavarz's pioneering study is the first extensive critical examination of this vast, dynamic body of literature. Through close readings of the Divan, his collection of more than 35,000 lyric verses, she explores Rumi's extraordinary popular and critical literary success.

Book Journey Through the Heart of a Modern Mystic

Download or read book Journey Through the Heart of a Modern Mystic written by Sandra Credendino-Nile and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of original inspirational narrative, poetry, prose, art and lyrics, in five parts, honoring the sacredness of human existence and life experiences. All of the poems rhyme and have a rhythm of an almost musical sense. Some contain profound messages regarding present worldly conditions. It inspires to search deep within the soul and reevaluate and explore our priorities and personal relationships, as well as the relationship and love we have with and for ourselves, God, Nature, and Humankind. This work is un-convoluted, honest, compassionate and touching. It is also very clear. This artist finds a way with words that is so understandable and easy to relate to that you don't have to have a degree in literature, philosophy, or even be a fan of the art to appreciate all she has to say. In part three all of the poems pertain to romantic and sensual love. Each one is a short story in itself. Some of them are very personal pieces which acknowledge and express the deepest of human emotions. This is done with truthfulness, wisdom and grace. For the closing pieces the author shares a heartfelt eulogy written for her grandmother (to whom the book is dedicated) and a last poem found by her daughter (shortly before completion of this collection) which was written by the author in 1966. It is a variable testimony of the truthfulness and purity of her work.

Book Bob Dylan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seth Rogovoy
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2009-11-24
  • ISBN : 1416559833
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Bob Dylan written by Seth Rogovoy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Dylan and his artistic accomplishments have been explored, examined, and dissected year in and year out for decades, and through almost every lens. Yet rarely has anyone delved extensively into Dylan's Jewish heritage and the influence of Judaism in his work. In Bob Dylan: Prophet, Mystic, Poet, Seth Rogovoy, an award-winning critic and expert on Jewish music, rectifies that oversight, presenting a fascinating new look at one of the most celebrated musicians of all time. Rogovoy unearths the various strands of Judaism that appear throughout Bob Dylan's songs, revealing the ways in which Dylan walks in the footsteps of the Jewish Prophets. Rogovoy explains the profound depth of Jewish content—drawn from the Bible, the Talmud, and the Kabbalah—at the heart of Dylan's music, and demonstrates how his songs can only be fully appreciated in light of Dylan's relationship to Judaism and the Jewish themes that inform them. From his childhood growing up the son of Abe and Beatty Zimmerman, who were at the center of the small Jewish community in his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, to his frequent visits to Israel and involvement with the Orthodox Jewish outreach movement Chabad, Judaism has permeated Dylan's everyday life and work. Early songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" derive central imagery from passages in the books of Ezekiel and Isaiah; mid-career numbers like "Forever Young" are infused with themes from the Bible, Jewish liturgy, and Kabbalah; while late-period efforts have revealed a mind shaped by Jewish concepts of Creation and redemption. In this context, even Dylan's so-called born-again period is seen as a logical, almost inevitable development in his growth as a man and artist wrestling with the burden and inheritance of the Jewish prophetic tradition. Bob Dylan: Prophet, Mystic, Poet is a fresh and illuminating look at one of America's most renowned—and one of its most enigmatic—talents.

Book Leonard Cohen

Download or read book Leonard Cohen written by Harry Freedman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Leonard Cohen taught us that even in the midst of darkness there is light, in the midst of hatred there is love, with our dying breath we can still sing Hallelujah.' - The late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks 'Among the finest volumes on Cohen's life and lyrics ... An exploration which would have intrigued and engaged Leonard himself.' - John McKenna, writer and friend of Leonard Cohen Harry Freedman uncovers the spiritual traditions that lie behind Leonard Cohen's profound and unmistakable lyrics. The singer and poet Leonard Cohen was deeply learned in Judaism and Christianity, the spiritual traditions that underpinned his self-identity and the way he made sense of the world. In this book Harry Freedman, a leading author of cultural and religious history, explores the mystical and spiritual sources Cohen drew upon, discusses their original context and the stories and ideas behind them. Cohen's music is studded with allusions to Jewish and Christian tradition, to stories and ideas drawn from the Bible, Talmud and Kabbalah. From his 1967 classic 'Suzanne', through masterpieces like 'Hallelujah' and 'Who by Fire', to his final challenge to the divinity, 'You Want It Darker' he drew on spirituality for inspiration and as a tool to create understanding, clarity and beauty. Born into a prominent and scholarly Jewish family in Montreal, Canada, Cohen originally aspired to become a poet, before turning to song writing and eventually recording his own compositions. Later, he became immersed in Zen Buddhism, moving in 1990 to a Zen monastery on Mount Baldy, California where he remained for some years. He died, with immaculate timing, on the day before Donald Trump was elected in 2016, leaving behind him a legacy that will be felt for generations to come. Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius looks deeply into the imagination of one of the greatest singers and lyricists of our time, providing a window on the landscape of his soul. Departing from traditional biographical approaches, Freedman explores song by song how Cohen reworked myths and prayers, legends and allegories with an index of songs at the end of the book for readers to search by their favourites. By the end the reader will be left with a powerful understanding of Cohen's story, together with a far broader insight into the mystical origins of his inimitable work.
