This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roping a buffalo, running off cattle rustlers, sitting out a winter storm in a cave--adventures like these were all part of everyday life for the cowboy. They're depicted here in stories that have stood the test of time, by writers whose words are just as funny and wise today as they were one hundred years ago. Covering all corners of the great Western expanse--from Montana to Mexico, California to the Mississippi--the stories in this collection represent not just the Anglo male perspective but also that of the blacks, Mexicans, and women who made their lives on the range. It features works by Owen Wister, Theodore Roosevelt, Frederic Remington, Isabella L. Bird, Nat Love, Bill Nye, Charlie Siringo, Zane Grey, Andy Adams, Mark Twain, E. Mulford, O. Henry (creator of the Cisco Kid), and many others, including some surprises by little-known authors.

Book Annals of Emporia and Lyon County

Download or read book Annals of Emporia and Lyon County written by Jacob Stotler and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Emporia and Lyon County: Historical Incidents of the First Quarter of a Century, 1857 to 1882 The Annals presents pictures of ex-Senator Preston B. Plumb and of the home of his family. The latter building was completed after the Senator's death, and in it dwells the family, except young Preston, who is temporarily absent at school. Mr. Plumb's career in Kansas is so well known that there is little use for a historical writing here. He came here in 1857 and helped locate the town, and started its first newspaper, The Emporia News. He was intimately associated with the town as long as he lived. He had been reared in Ohio and learned the printer's trade. At the age of eighteen years he was one of the editors and proprietors of the Xenia (Ohio) News, and before he was twenty he had established his Emporia paper. When he was twenty-five he was a member of the Kansas house of representatives and chairman of its judiciary committee. He left the newspaper in 1859, and went to law school. Returning here in 1861, he opened a law office, after a brief trial at editorial work again. He had but just started fairly when he enlisted in the army, where he served over three years. Returning from the army, he again threw all his power and energy into the law practice, and the firm of Ruggles & Plumb had, in a remarkably short time, a practice excelled by only one firm in the state. He next became president of the Emporia National bank. At the sessions of the house of representatives in 1867 and 1865 he was again a member of that body, the first time as its speaker. In 1877 he was elected United States senator, and was re-elected in 1883 and in 1889. He made his best reputation as senator by his untiring devotion to the interests of his constituents. The death of no public man from Kansas was ever so generally and sincerely regretted and mourned as that of this citizen of Emporia. Mr. Plumb was a complete success in life in all his undertakings. He had great industry and power, and when necessary these were exerted to the fullest extent for the accomplishment of his objects, and he scarcely knew there was a word called "fail." His great usefulness was lifelong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angelo Lyons, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel But still hoping - ou the black' moved from house to house, for to sleep in the streets such a night as it promised to be, or even under a shed in the fields, or in a cart, or coal-hole, was not to be endured without a struggle, and Abel, though a slave-born negro, had seen better days, and was not a beggar. So, Abel 'moved on' up High Street, till he came to Ship Street which having a 'well-to-do' look about it, as if Heaven had been very good to it, he turned down it, praying the Great Giver it might 'bring him enough to buy him something to eat and a night's lodging.' It brought him to Market Street, and that was all. He could distinguish several faces, by the ruddy glow of the blazing hearths, vacantly staring at him 5 but possibly it was too cold for them to move from their fires, or he might have fared better. Neverthe less the Great Giver had heard him, and was even then - when the poor 'black's' heart was fainting within him, as the evening closed in and the bitter night had literally to be met face to face - earnestly moving a kind heart in his behalf. Book excerpt: “You can almost taste the food in Bill Buford’s Dirt, an engrossing, beautifully written memoir about his life as a cook in France.” —The Wall Street Journal What does it take to master French cooking? This is the question that drives Bill Buford to abandon his perfectly happy life in New York City and pack up and (with a wife and three-year-old twin sons in tow) move to Lyon, the so-called gastronomic capital of France. But what was meant to be six months in a new and very foreign city turns into a wild five-year digression from normal life, as Buford apprentices at Lyon’s best boulangerie, studies at a legendary culinary school, and cooks at a storied Michelin-starred restaurant, where he discovers the exacting (and incomprehensibly punishing) rigueur of the professional kitchen. With his signature humor, sense of adventure, and masterful ability to bring an exotic and unknown world to life, Buford has written the definitive insider story of a city and its great culinary culture.

Book The Bikeriders

Download or read book The Bikeriders written by Danny Lyon and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968, The Bikeriders explores firsthand the stories and characters of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. The journal-size title features original black-and-white photographs and transcribed interviews made from 1963 to 1967, when Danny Lyon was a member of the Outlaws gang. Authentic, personal, and uncompromising, Lyon's depiction of individuals on the outskirts of society offers a gritty yet humanistic view that subverts the commercialized image of Americana. Akin to the documentary style of 1960s-era New Journalism, made famous by writers such as Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, and Tom Wolfe, Lyon's work, like theirs, demonstrates humanitarian interests, advocacy, and "saturation reporting." The importance of his work and our interest in the subject is reinforced by Lyon's immersion in his subject.

Book Narcissistic Narrative

Download or read book Narcissistic Narrative written by Linda Hutcheon and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Hutcheon, in this original study, examines the modes, forms and techniques of narcissistic fiction, that is, fiction which includes within itself some sort of commentary on its own narrative and/or linguistic nature. Her analysis is further extended to discuss the implications of such a development for both the theory of the novel and reading theory. Having placed this phenomenon in its historical context Linda Hutcheon uses the insights of various reader-response theories to explore the “paradox” created by metafiction: the reader is, at the same time, co-creator of the self-reflexive text and distanced from it because of its very self-reflexiveness. She illustrates her analysis through the works of novelists such as Fowles, Barth, Nabokov, Calvino, Borges, Carpentier, and Aquin. For the paperback edition of this important book a preface has been added which examines developments since first publication. Narcissistic Narrative was selected by Choice as one of the outstanding academic books for 1981–1982.
