Book excerpt: Enter the world of the most notorious gambling den in London, where matches are made... unusually. Welcome to the world of THE LYON'S DEN: The Black Widow of Whitehall Connected World, where the underground of Regency London thrives... and loves. Heiress to a fortune, Jenny Hambling needs a husband, before she is made to marry a man she despises. The Lyon's Den is her only option to buy a husband fast. But she runs into the last man she wants to meet, Miles, The Duke of Goldthorpe. He ruined Jenny's debut by calling her a Mill Girl. Now he will ruin her bargain with his friend. Three years ago, Miles saw Jenny and tumbled head over heels in love. Doubting his feelings, he called her a name he later regretted, but he arrived at her house too late to apologize. Jenny had gone home. Philosophically, Miles put the whole incident down to a brief infatuation and went on with his life. But infuriatingly, he could never forget her. Now, he can do no less than make amends for her disastrous first season. Thrown together, Jenny and Miles find their attraction as strong as ever. But their lives have moved on, and they find themselves in a new place. Miles is a duke with all the pomp and responsibility that entails. Jenny has an industrial empire to manage in the north. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine to yourselves such a young family, all in the very heyday of life, parents and children alike. It is true that Mrs. Kingsward was something of an invalid, but nobody believed that her illness was anything very serious, only a reason why she should be taken abroad, to one place after another, to the great enjoyment of the girls, who were never so happy as when they were travelling and gaining, as they said, experience of life. She was not yet forty, while Charlie was twenty-one and Bee nineteen, so that virtually they were all of the same age, so to speak, and enjoyed everything together—mamma by no means put aside into the ranks of the dowagers, but going everywhere and doing everything just like the rest, and as much admired as anyone. To be sure she had not been able to walk about so much this time, and had not danced once, except a single turn with Charlie, which brought on a palpitation, so that she declared with a laugh that her dancing days were over. Her dancing days over! Considering how fond she had always been of dancing, the three young people laughed over this, and did not take the least alarm. Mamma had always been the ringleader in everything, even in the romps with the little ones at home. For you must not think that these three were all of the family by any means. Bee and Betty were the eldest of I can’t at this moment tell how many, who were safe in the big nursery at Kingswarden under the charge (very partial) of papa, and the strict and steady rule of nurse, who was a personage of high authority in the house. Papa had but lately left “the elder ones,” as he called them, including his pretty wife—and had gone back to his work, which was that of an official at the Horse Guards, in some military department of which I don’t even know the name, for I doubt whether the Intelligence Department, which satisfies all the necessities of description, had been invented in those days. Colonel Kingsward was a distinguished officer, and the occasion of great éclat to the little group when he showed himself at their head, drawing round him a sort of cloud of foreign officers wherever he went, which Bee and Betty appreciated largely, and to which Mrs. Kingsward herself did not object; for they all liked the clank of spurs, as was natural, and the endless ranks of partners, attendants in the gardens, and general escort and retinue thus provided. It was not, however, among these officers, red, blue, green, and white—of all the colours in the rainbow—that Bee had found her fate. For I need scarcely say it was a proposal which had turned everything upside down and filled the little party with excitement.

Download or read book The Beggars Signwriters written by Louis Greenberg and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a spring afternoon, people in the cosmopolitan suburb of Melville in Johannesburg go about their business unselfconsciuosly. This novel introduces us to some of them: To Hugh Epstein, a science lecturer setting up a gigantic "microchip" for public display. To his daughter, Tanya, on her way with a group of school friends, among them a boy called Lyon, to perform their singular rituals on the Melville Koppies. To Shane and Renée, two artist friends, who observe the group as they pass the neglected garden of a reclusive Greek immigrant. To Aden, an embittered friend of Shane and Renée, moping on another table at the same restuarant. In his remarkable debut novel, Louis Greenberg unravels these intertwined lives, recounting their stories in depth and detail as we follow them singly or jointly to the remote Karoo, to London, to Greece; into city households, friendships, sexual and emotional entanglements. With gentle thoughtfulness and in vivid colours he reveals life in the city to us. The narrator's regard remains detached, yet his observations are so fine and his eye so unflinching that very real people step from the pages, each seeking self-expression and fulfilment. All carriers of signs, like the beggars at suburban intersections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mild-mannered children’s book author Lyon Wentworth is caught in the middle of a bus hijacking in gritty 1970s New York in this taut psychological thriller. There are three men in the bar at the Port Authority bus terminal. Lyon Wentworth, a Connecticut children’s book author having a drink to celebrate his newest book, sits in the middle. He’s harmless. The other men aren’t. One is Willie Shep, a disgruntled supermarket employee who carries a Walther PPK and enough rage to burn Manhattan to the ground. The other is a bearded man with a .44 Magnum and a professional killer’s ruthless calm. All three men board the same bus. It’s doubtful they’ll all get off it alive. The bus is halfway through the Lincoln Tunnel when Willie presses his gun into the driver’s neck and tells him to stop. He shoots two passengers, killing one, and sends a message to the police demanding a million dollars and a private plane. An intricate dance is about to begin, and the most dangerous man on the bus may be the one who’s not carrying a gun. This irresistible mystery from Richard Forrest begins with a hostage situation as tense as classic films like Dog Day Afternoon or The Taking of Pelham 123. Lyon Wentworth may stare down his share of evil men, but The Death in the Willows is a mystery novel unlike any other. The Death in the Willows is the 4th book in the Lyon and Bea Wentworth Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

I am sorry for my inability to communicate effectively, and I know these past few weeks haven't been the best." "I do not want your apology, Xavier; I want to know why you have changed so much and become someone I barely know. I want to know what happened." She said, staring up at him, "Was my love never enough?" She didn't want to show her vulnerability, but he had always seen it. "It was always enough," he said as he stepped towards her, crossing into her personal space. Her heart picked up its pace, and she stared up at him. She could have told him to step back, but she wanted this. "You were always enough. I am sorry if I made you feel like you weren't." He said, and his lips met hers.
