Book excerpt: Local interests claim that farm land in the Lynches River watershed below Welches Bridge is frequently inundated by flood waters and is impaired by poor drainage. They state that the main channels are obstructed by fallen trees, debris, and swamp growth, and have become filled with silt, causing higher and more prolonged floods; and that the few farm ditches which have been constructed have not proved satisfactory on account of the flat slopes and slow run-off. They request Federal aid because the corrective measures are of such magnitude that the cost cannot be borne by the local farmers. About 8,000 acres of cultivated lands in the flood plain which are inundated frequently, and additional lands bordering the tributary streams which are affected by impaired drainage, would be benefited by the request improvement. The District Engineer finds that the channel improvement requested is the only feasible method of ameliorating flood conditioned in the basin, and that the prospective benefits may justify the cost. He therefore recommends a survey of the Lynches River basin to determine the feasibility of and justification for flood-control measures in the basin.
