Book excerpt: This is the first in a series dedicated to the understanding of tropical diseases. This volume examines the basic biology and clinical expression of lymphatic-dwelling filarial parasites, parasites affecting over 128 million people in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Although it is responsible for the disfiguring elephantiasis, infection with this parasite leads to a spectrum of clinical manifestations. The underlying pathogenetic mechanisms of infection, its epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this often devastating vector-borne diseases will be the focus of this book.

Book T Cell Subsets and Cytokines Interplay in Infectious Diseases

Download or read book T Cell Subsets and Cytokines Interplay in Infectious Diseases written by Mustafa A.S. and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a wealth of new data on the interaction among T-cell subsets and cytokines, this book offers a fresh perspective on infectious diseases. It provides useful insights into the nature and treatment of helminthic and mycobacterial infections, with special emphasis on leprosy, leishmaniasis, malaria and trypanosomiasis. The outcome of the host response to infectious agent is seen as depending upon the T-cell subsets activated and the cytokines produced by them and other cells, such as macrophages, B cells and basophils. Experts contributions shed new light on how TH0 cells are preferentially activated and differentiated into TH1 or TH2 subsets; TH1 and TH2 cells and their cytokines induce both protective immune responses and adverse immune reactions to infectious agents; cytokines modulate the response of infectious diseases to chemotherapy; and cytokines, their receptors and antagonist, and anti-cytokine antibodies can be used in therapy. Those working in the fields of immunology, parasitology, microbiology and vaccine development particularly if they are interested in tropical diseases, will find the volume an invaluable source of information.

Book The Endothelium

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel Félétou
  • Publisher : Morgan & Claypool Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1615041230
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book The Endothelium written by Michel Félétou and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Multiple Functions of the Endothelial Cells / Calcium Signaling in Vascular Cells and Cell-to-Cell Communications / Endothelium-Dependent Regulation of Vascular Tone / Conclusion / References

Book Working to Overcome the Global Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases

Download or read book Working to Overcome the Global Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases written by World Health Organization. Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2010 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) blight the lives of a billion people worldwide and threaten the health of millions more. These ancient companions of poverty weaken impoverished populations, frustrate the achievement of health in the Millennium Development Goals and impede global health and economies has convinced governments, donors, the pharmaceutical industry and other agencies, including nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), to invest in preventing and controlling this diverse group of diseases. Global efforts to control "hidden" diseases, such as dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease), leprosy, gains including the imminent eradication of dracunculiasis. Since 1989 (when most endemic countries began reporting monthly from each endemic village), the number of new dracunculiasis cases has fallen from 892 055 in 12 endemic countries to 3190 in 4 countries in 2009, a decrease of more than 99%. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends five public-health strategies for the prevention and control of NTDs: preventive chemotherapy; intensified case-management; vector control; the provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene; and veterinary public health (that is, applying veterinary sciences to ensure the health and well-being of humans). Although one approach and delivered locally." - p. vii
