An electric field was applied within the collision chamber and the increase in Lyman-alpha intensity was used to drive cross sections for formation of H(2s). Relationships are presented between the projectile excitation cross section and the cross section for electron capture in H(+) impact or stripping in H impact which are relatively independent of the identity of the target molecule. Book excerpt: Cross sections are reported for emission of Lyman-alpha radiation in collisions of a charge-equilibrated 1-25 keV hydrogen beam with N2, O2, CO, CO2, NH3, CH4, and H2. For each target molecule, the separate cross sections for formation of H(2p) and H(2s) in H(+) and H collisions and the fractional population of these projectiles in a charge-equilibrated beam are used to calculate the effective cross section for formation of H(2p) and H(2s). Individual contributions to the overall Lyman-alpha intensity owing to projectile and dissociative excitation are presented for the hydrogen-containing compounds. The results show that, for both projectile and dissociative excitation, collisions involving impact of fast hydrogen atoms rather than protons are the major source of Lyman-alpha production in an aurora. Projectile excitation is demonstrated to be a substantially more important source of Lyman alpha than dissociative excitation in the 1-25 keV energy range. (Author).

The observed emission cross sections yield the cross sections for population of H(2p) in electron capture collisions of the protons and in excitation collisions of the hydrogen atoms after small corrections for polarization and cascade effects. Application of an electric field of several hundred V/cm in the collision chamber causes the light emission to be enhanced, owing to radiative quenching of metastable H(2s), and the maximum contribution to emission of auroral Lyman-alpha from production of H(2s) can be assessed. The results show that collisional excitation of fast hydrogen atoms rather than electron capture by protons is the major mechanism for H(2s) and H(2p) production in the aurora. Consideration of the ratio of the cross sections for producing H(2s) and H(2p) and of the possible collisional quenching processes for H(2s) leads to the conclusion that the major contribution to auroral Lyman-alpha in the 1 - 30 keV energy range is emission from hydrogen atoms collisionally excited to the 2p state.
