Book Lydia Becker

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lydia Becker: A Cameo Life-Sketch A Liberal Government was again returned to power in 1880, and the extension of the suffrage figured prominently in their programme. These Demonstrations of women far eclipsed any that were held by the agricultural labourers for whose benefit, and in response to whose presumably urgent demand, the new Reform Act was to be drafted, and the hopes of the women in the speedy success of their efforts ran very high. Book Victorian Popularizers of Science

Download or read book Victorian Popularizers of Science written by Bernard Lightman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of Charles Darwin and his fellow Victorian scientists have had an abiding effect on the modern world. But at the time The Origin of Species was published in 1859, the British public looked not to practicing scientists but to a growing group of professional writers and journalists to interpret the larger meaning of scientific theories in terms they could understand and in ways they could appreciate. Victorian Popularizers of Science focuses on this important group of men and women who wrote about science for a general audience in the second half of the nineteenth century. Bernard Lightman examines more than thirty of the most prolific, influential, and interesting popularizers of the day, investigating the dramatic lecturing techniques, vivid illustrations, and accessible literary styles they used to communicate with their audience. By focusing on a forgotten coterie of science writers, their publishers, and their public, Lightman offers new insights into the role of women in scientific inquiry, the market for scientific knowledge, tensions between religion and science, and the complexities of scientific authority in nineteenth-century Britain.

Book excerpt: This innovative collection of original essays focuses on the ways in which geography, gender, race, and religion influenced the reception of Darwinism in the English-speaking world of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The contributions to this volume collectively illustrate the importance of local social, physical, and religious arrangements, while revealing that neither distance from Darwin's home at Down nor size of community greatly influenced how various regions responded to Darwinism. The women are all strangers she met on the street who agreed to pose in front of a nearby wall. Only their legs are in frame, yet from this single starting point, the kaleidoscopic diversity of women in New York is revealed. The ease of making pictures with a cell phone has sparked a revolution in photography; Stacey's body of work is perhaps the most powerful to come out of a cultural moment of technology, fashion and people watching.

Book The Pedagogy of Images

Download or read book The Pedagogy of Images written by Marina Balina and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s, with the end of the revolution, the Soviet government began investing resources and energy into creating a new type of book for the first generation of young Soviet readers. In a sense, these early books for children were the ABCs of Soviet modernity; creatively illustrated and intricately designed, they were manuals and primers that helped the young reader enter the field of politics through literature. Children’s books provided the basic vocabulary and grammar for understanding new, post-revolutionary realities, but they also taught young readers how to perceive modern events and communist practices. Relying on a process of dual-media rendering, illustrated books presented propaganda as a simple, repeatable narrative or verse, while also casting it in easily recognizable graphic images. A vehicle of ideology, object of affection, and product of labour all in one, the illustrated book for the young Soviet reader emerged as an important cultural phenomenon. Communist in its content, it was often avant-gardist in its form. Spotlighting three thematic threads – communist goals, pedagogy, and propaganda – The Pedagogy of Images traces the formation of a mass-modern readership through the creation of the communist-inflected visual and narrative conventions that these early readers were meant to appropriate.

Book The Everything Store

Download or read book The Everything Store written by Brad Stone and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative account of the rise of Amazon and its intensely driven founder, Jeff Bezos, praised by the Seattle Times as "the definitive account of how a tech icon came to life." Amazon.com started off delivering books through the mail. But its visionary founder, Jeff Bezos, wasn't content with being a bookseller. He wanted Amazon to become the everything store, offering limitless selection and seductive convenience at disruptively low prices. To do so, he developed a corporate culture of relentless ambition and secrecy that's never been cracked. Until now. Brad Stone enjoyed unprecedented access to current and former Amazon employees and Bezos family members, giving readers the first in-depth, fly-on-the-wall account of life at Amazon. Compared to tech's other elite innovators -- Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg -- Bezos is a private man. But he stands out for his restless pursuit of new markets, leading Amazon into risky new ventures like the Kindle and cloud computing, and transforming retail in the same way Henry Ford revolutionized manufacturing. The Everything Store is the revealing, definitive biography of the company that placed one of the first and largest bets on the Internet and forever changed the way we shop and read.
