Book Tradition and Innovation in Hellenistic Poetry

Download or read book Tradition and Innovation in Hellenistic Poetry written by Marco Fantuzzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellenistic poets of the third and second centuries BC were concerned with the need both to mark their continuity with the classical past and to demonstrate their independence from it. In this revised and expanded translation of Muse e modelli: la poesia ellenistica da Alessandro Magno ad Augusto, Greek poetry of the third and second centuries BC and its reception and influence at Rome are explored allowing both sides of this literary practice to be appreciated. Genres as diverse as epic and epigram are considered from a historical perspective, in the full range of their deep-level structures, providing a different perspective on the poetry and its influence at Rome. Some of the most famous poetry of the age such as Callimachus' Aitia and Apollonius' Argonautica is examined. In addition, full attention is paid to the poetry of encomium, in particular the newly published epigrams of Posidippus, and Hellenistic poetics, notably Philodemus.

Book The Rise and Fall of the Library of Alexandria

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Library of Alexandria written by Jean-Arcady Meyer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project to bring together all the books of the world in Alexandria was not only intended to contribute to the glory of the Ptolemies, but also aimed to attract scholars to the city, who would be capable of exploiting these books to produce others and to thus advance the literature and science of their time. This book demonstrates that the availability and critical study of the 500,000 scrolls which the Library of Alexandria probably contained made possible the production of some remarkable pieces of Alexandrian literature and philosophy, the considerable increase in historical and geographical knowledge, as well as outstanding contributions to the history of mathematics, astronomy, mechanics, and medicine. The book recalls how Alexandria was founded and became the most beautiful city in the ancient world. It also recalls the incredible series of wars, popular revolts, assassinations, palace intrigues, and debaucheries that brought about the inexorable decline of this city and its Library.

Book The Poets of Alexandria

Download or read book The Poets of Alexandria written by Susan A. Stephens and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandria was the greatest of the new cities founded by Alexander the Great as his armies swept eastward. It was ruled by his successors, the Ptolemies, who presided over one of the richest and most productive periods in the whole of Greek literature. Susan A Stephens here reveals a cultural world in transition: reverential of the compositions of the past (especially after construction of the great library, repository for all previous Greek oeuvres), but at the same time forward-looking and experimental, willing to make use of previous forms of writing in exciting new ways. The author examines Alexandria's poets in turn. She discusses the strikingly avant-garde Aetia of Callimachus; the idealized pastoral forms of Theocritus (which anticipated the invention of fiction); and the neo-Homerian epic of Apollonius, the Argonautica, with its impressive combination of narrative grandeur and psychological acuity. She shows that all three poets were innovators, even while they looked to the past for inspiration: drawing upon Homer, Hesiod, Pindar and the lyric poets, they emphasized stories and material that were entirely relevant to their own progressive cosmopolitan environment.

Book Realism in Alexandrian Poetry

Download or read book Realism in Alexandrian Poetry written by Graham Zanker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poetry of Alexandria under the first three Ptolemies represents a second golden age of Greek literature. The eminence grise of poetic circles was Callimachus, whose poetic manifesto in favour of small scale, meticulously detailed and mannered works was to be of great influence on Augustan poetry in Rome. The stylistic aims of the Alexandrian poets have been much discussed, as has their reliance on literary tradition. First published in 1987, Realism in Alexandrian Poetry covers less familiar ground. Taking the whole canon of Alexandrian poetry as his starting point, Dr Zanker surveys the use of the realistic mode in works like The Idylls of Theocritus (were these real shepherds?), including such matters as the humorous elements of Callimachus Hymns, the love-story in Apollonius’ ‘Argonautica’, and the low-life sketches of epyllia like Hecale as well as the Mimes of Herodas. The striving for realism and minute detail is set in the context of the admiration of pictorialism in the plastic arts, the new valuation of science as a measure of human experience, and the deliberate mingling of high and low genres. All this is in turn placed in the cultural context of early Alexandria. Few books take the whole of Alexandrian poetry as their canvas. This one which does will be as valuable a study of the Alexandrian poets as it will be a forceful contribution to literary criticism.

Book Hymns and Epigrams

Download or read book Hymns and Epigrams written by Callimachus and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CALLIMACHUS of Cyrene, 3rd century B.C., became after 284 B.C. a teacher of 'grammar', and poetry at Alexandria where he was made a librarian in the "University' and prepared a catalogue of the books in its library. He died about the year 240. Of his large published output, only 6 hymns, 63 epigrams, and fragments survive (Loeb Nos. 421, 129). The hymns are very learned and artificial in style; the epigrams are good (they are also in the Loeb Greek Anthology volumes). LYCOPHRON of Chalcis in Euboea was a contemporary of Callimachus in Alexandria where he became supervisor of the comedies included in the new library. He wrote a treatise on these and composed tragedies and other poetry. We possess Alexandra or Cassandra where-in Cassandra foretells the fortune of Troy and the besieging Greeks. This poem is a curiosity -- a showpiece of knowledge of obscure stories, names, and words. ARATUS of Soli in Cilicia, c. 315-245 B.C., was a didactic poet at the court of Antigonus Gonatas of Macedonia, where he wrote his famous Phaenomena (Appearances). He visited Antiochus I of Syria but returned to Macedonia. His work is an imitation of Eudoxus' prosework on astronomy, and cicero, germanicus Caesar, and Avieenius translated it into Latin; Cicero's survives in fragments only; the other versions are more complete, Avienius; being a paraphrase
