These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A History of the Reformation (Vol. 2 of 2): Look inside the book: While it may be said with perfect truth that the churchly ideal in the minds of the leaders in most of the Reformed Churches was to restore the theocratic democracy of the early centuries, and that this was a strong point of contrast between them and Luther, who insisted that the jus episcopale belonged to the civil magistrate, in practice the secular authorities in Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Palatinate, etc., kept almost as tight a hold on the Reformed national Churches as did the Lutheran princes and municipalities. ...One has only to compare the Bishops’ Book and the King’s Book of the Henrican period in England with the many statements Erasmus has made about the kind of reformation he desired to see, to recognise that they were meant to serve for a reformation in life and morals which would leave untouched the fundamental doctrinal system of the mediæval Church and its organisation in accordance with the principles laid down by the great Humanist. ...But if originality be the gift to seize, to combine into one organic whole, separate isolated truths, to see their bearing upon the practical religious life of all men, educated and ignorant, to use the new light to strip the common religious life of all paralysing excrescences, to simplify it and to make it clear that the sum and essence of Christianity is “unwavering trust of the heart in Him who has given Himself to us in Christ Jesus as our Father, personal assurance of faith because Christ with His work undertakes our cause,” and to do all this with the tenderest sympathy for every true dumb religiousPg 16 instinct which had made men wander away from the simplicity which is in Christ Jesus, then Luther stands alone in his day and generation, unapproachable by any other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther: To Which Is Prefixed an Expository Essay on the Lutheran Reformation There are three different methods in which the exa mination of an event like the Reformation - if it should not be rather called a series of progressing and devel oped events - may be conducted. By the first, its principles might be investigated and tested. Such an examination would suppose the proper character of. The facts to be as yet unascertained; and would have for its object the resolution of the events into their ori ginating and component principles, and the comparison of these with some previously-acknowledged standard, that so a definite sentence might be pronounced upon the Whole series. This would be the method of ori ginal investigation. 1. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany

Download or read book Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany written by Charles Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany: Until the Close of the Diet of Worms My editorial duties have been hardly more than to see through the press a singularly and characteristically perfect manuscript; and they have been lightened by the faithful care with which Mrs. Beard and her son, Mr. Lewis Beard, b.a., have compared manuscript and proof. I have considered it needful, in order to guard against accidental error, to exercise a general supervision of the narrative, to compare quotations with the original passages, and to verify references. N o alterations have been introduced into the text or the notes, except where an obvious lapsus calami had crept in, which, however, thanks to the author's extreme accuracy, has happened but very occasionally. Here and there in the notes a reference to books or articles published since the manuscript was finished has been added. For the title of the volume, the headings of the chapters and the pages, and the list of the principal authorities and editions used by the author, I am responsible; and for the Index, Mr. Lewis Beard. Download or read book Luther s lives written by Elizabeth Vandiver and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This volume brings together two important contemporary accounts of the life of Martin Luther in a confrontation that had been postponed for more than four hundred and fifty years. The first of these is written after Luther’s death, when it was rumoured that demons had seized the Reformer on his deathbed and dragged him off to Hell. In response to these rumours, Luther’s friend and colleague, Philip Melanchthon wrote and published a brief encomium of the Reformer in 1548. A completely new translation of this text appears in this book. It was in response to Melanchthon’s work that Johannes Cochlaeus completed and published his own monumental life of Luther in 1549, which is translated and made available in English for the first time in this volume. Such is the detail and importance of Cochlaeus’s life of Luther that for an eyewitness account of the Reformation – and the beginnings of the Catholic Counter-Reformation – there is simply no other historical document to compare.

The Pope claimed to be the Vicegerent of Jesus Christ on earth; the priests called themselves the chosen generation, the sacred order; the laity were, of course, all baptized and repeated their prayers in churches without number; and the cross might be seen standing up everywhere. Now, was the condition of the church really so deplorable as to justify the breath ing of the suspicious word Reformation? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Facts About Luther We have reached another century-mark in the his tory of the Protestant Church. Four hundred years ago, on All Saints' Eve - the Hallow E'en Of our days - the young Professor of Sacred Scripture in the University of Wittenberg attached ninety-five proposi tions, or theses, to the University bulletin-board on the portals of the Old Castle Church Of the town. Historians and theologians, both Catholics and Pro testants, have viewed that act in many ways. To some it was a defiance hurled at the immoral conditions Of Europe, a gage thrown down at last, after several cen turies of spiritual conflict, for Rome to pick up or to be branded as a cowardly antagonist of German as pirations, of German love and devotion for pure doc trine, for pure moral living. To others, it was only an incident - ah incident, it is true, which was to set Europe ablaze within five years - but still an incident, which might have been seen and soon forgotten, had not the temporal condition Of Europe been ready for the outbreak which followed it. Both sides admit that the Christian faith had then fallen upon evil days, but both sides have since torn away every vestige Of hero worship from the militant figrre Of the man who cen tered Europe, political and religious, around himself at the Diet Of Worms, three years afterwards. Both sides have yielded much for and against him in the discussions, the polemics, the attacks, the accusations, which have swirled around him since. The Protestant religious world, although deprived Of valuable auxiliaries in the Sturm und Drang Of the conflict which is now throwing the world into confusion, will not allow this Fourth Centenary of Luther's Theses to pass without an attempt to rehabilitate their great hero, despite the results Of modern scholarship.
