Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christians used charges of adultery, incest, and lascivious behavior to demonize their opponents, police insiders, resist pagan rulers, and define what it meant to be a Christian. Christians frequently claimed that they, and they alone were sexually virtuous, comparing themselves to those marked as outsiders, especially non-believers and "heretics," who were said to be controlled by lust and unable to rein in their carnal desires. True or not, these charges allowed Christians to present themselves as different from and morally superior to those around them. Through careful, innovative readings, Jennifer Knust explores the writings of Paul, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, and other early Christian authors who argued that Christ alone made self-mastery possible. Rejection of Christ led to both immoral sexual behavior and, ultimately, alienation and punishment from God. Knust considers how Christian writers participated in a long tradition of rhetorical invective, a rhetoric that was often employed to defend status and difference. Christians borrowed, deployed, and reconfigured classical rhetorical techniques, turning them against their rulers to undercut their moral and political authority. Knust also examines the use of accusations of licentiousness in conflicts between rival groups of Christians. Portraying rival sects as depraved allowed accusers to claim their own group as representative of "true Christianity." Knust's book also reveals the ways in which sexual slurs and their use in early Christian writings reflected cultural and gendered assumptions about what constituted purity, morality, and truth. In doing so, Abandoned to Lust highlights the complex interrelationships between sex, gender, and sexuality within the classical, biblical, and early-Christian traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the most important of Seneca's tragedies, Thyestes, which has had a notable influence on Western drama from Shakespeare to Antonin Artaud. Thyestes emerges as the mastertext of 'Silver' Latin poetry, and as an original reflection on the nature of theatre comparable to Euripides' Bacchae. The book analyses the complex structure of the play, its main themes, the relationship between Seneca's vibrant style and his obsession with dark issues of revenge and regression. Substantial discussion of other plays - especially Trojan Women, Oedipus and Medea - permits a comprehensive re-evaluation of Seneca's poetics and its pivotal role in post-Virgilian literature. Topics explored include the relationship between Seneca's plays and his theory of the emotions, the connection between poetic inspiration and the Underworld, and Seneca's treatment of time, which, in a perspective informed by psychoanalysis, is seen as a central preoccupation of Senecan tragedy.

His larger-than-life quest for success makes him a role model for every middle-class citizen. Armed with nothing but grit and determination, the man managed to fight against adversity and emerge as a winner repeatedly. Throughout his journey, the only constant was his love, affection and devotion with regard to his family. Having lost his mother at a young age, Sardar Jodh Singh was no stranger to sorrow and hardship. He put his nose to the grindstone very early in life, understanding that the whims and vagaries of fate spare no one. Despite his fortitude, fate was unkind to him repeatedly. The family lost everything due to the blood-soaked event of the Partition. They were uprooted from their ancestral lands and lost contact with the men and women they had grown up around and spent years with. The brutal consequences of the geographical bifurcation of the country had wide-ranging effects on the lives of ordinary people like Jodh Singh. Not one to be deterred so easily, Jodh started life from scratch in newly-formed India. He slowly put together everything that his family needed- a roof over their heads, a source of income and social capital. He began the business of cattle trade and dairy products with just one coincidental deal but expanded until he had a monopoly in the field. He earned fame and trust as a businessman, all through his ethical practices and hard work. Later, he mastered many other fields such as transportation, the fodder business and even education. In his last few years, his philanthropic work led to his name becoming synonymous with benevolence and righteousness.
