Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the exclusive and serene Ojai Valley of California, Shadows of an Heiress revolves around the kidnapping of a twelve-year-old heiress. The story follows the lives of her parents; the kidnapper who has engineered the venture behind the back of her benefactor boyfriend; the family housekeeper and her husband; the soon-to-be retired Chief of Police; and a young man who is discovering a new world for him to embrace, if not for his wimpy reluctance. Particulary tested are Howard and Patricia Leyland. On the verge of divorce, their twenty-plus-year marriage has run its course just as the Leyland fortune has dwindled beyond Patricia’s comprehension. When suddenly confronted with the kidnapping of their daughter, Devon, they become no more than two self-absorbed people with circumstances they can neither control nor buy their way out of. The resolution is swift and somewhat offbeat, but quite what real life would see fit to reward these characters—all of them—with what they have earned.

Book Eternal Shadows or Shadow Makers

Download or read book Eternal Shadows or Shadow Makers written by Fr. Steve Peterson OSJ and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything in our solar system casts a shadow. The Earth, the moon, and the planets cast a shadow. The only thing that does not cast a shadow is the sun. The sun shines its light on one half of the planets, while the other half is in the shade of its own shadow. All living and non-living things expose only half of themselves to the light of the sun. Their other half remains in its shadow. Plants and animals are born with a shadow, live with a shadow, and must die with a shadow. Man is born with a shadow; however, he does not have to live and die with a shadow like the rest of the living creatures. He can choose to stay confined within the shadows of earthly things or go beyond the shadows to become something like the sun. But this quest takes a little something extra than most ordinary men seem to look for or even believe is possible to achieve. Early on in childhood, Fr. Peterson wanted to fly. Little did he know that his innocent desire to fly was an extraordinary, shadowless thing called prayer. A real and very extraordinary ear heard his plea. So God s heart, the only one in nature who produces no shadow, was moved to help show him how to go beyond the shadows of worldly things, frightful things, and even deadly things.

Book excerpt: Sydney Stewart needs a man, and not just any man, she needs Joseph. Joseph is tall, handsome and Ivy League educated. He works in the stock market and tells wonderfully descriptive tales of his days traveling the globe. Sydney's friends will love Joseph; they will welcome him into their throng with open arms but there is one small problem: Joseph doesn't exist. Noel Potter has a similar issue. He needs a new boyfriend to scare off his ex, but not just any boyfriend. He needs Stefan, an underwear model with all his buttock clenching, post-meal purging and obvious hatred for anyone not body beautiful. Like Joseph, Stefan doesn't exist. Enter Daniel Bliss, a classically trained New York actor with one thing in mind: Becoming the next Robert De Niro. There is one small problem: No one will hire him. He is stuck performing bit-parts and acting as stand-ins. But then Daniel comes up with a new business venture, one that pays handsomely and keeps him true to his aspirations of becoming a great actor: He starts acting in real-life roles, situations where a trained thespian can fill the void, becoming Joseph, Stefan and anything anyone is willing to pay for. "Every actor should own this book." Richard Montoya. Choreographer and Broadway Performer

  • Author : Raz Chen-Morris
  • Publisher : Penn State Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Measuring Shadows, Raz Chen-Morris demonstrates that a close study of Kepler’s Optics is essential to understanding his astronomical work and his scientific epistemology. He explores Kepler’s radical break from scientific and epistemological traditions and shows how the seventeenth-century astronomer posited new ways to view scientific truth and knowledge. Chen-Morris reveals how Kepler’s ideas about the formation of images on the retina and the geometrics of the camera obscura, as well as his astronomical observations, advanced the argument that physical reality could only be described through artificially produced shadows, reflections, and refractions. Breaking from medieval and Renaissance traditions that insisted upon direct sensory perception, Kepler advocated for instruments as mediators between the eye and physical reality, and for mathematical language to describe motion. It was only through this kind of knowledge, he argued, that observation could produce certainty about the heavens. Not only was this conception of visibility crucial to advancing the early modern understanding of vision and the retina, but it affected how people during that period approached and understood the world around them.
