Book excerpt: “Encompassing the history, tradition, and images of the great links, this book is a worthy travelling companion, and guide, on your golfing journey.” —Ian Baker-Finch, Australian professional golfer and sports commentator On the short list for the 2000 USGA International Book Award for “outstanding golf book of the year,” Links Golf: The Inside Story describes the beautiful land on which the links courses are built. Daley explains the term “links” and discusses their architecture, style, and great clusters. This behind-the-scenes look at the health of links golf in Britain puts an emphasis on elements that are undermining its viability and long-term future. In a time when many treeless courses are claiming to be genuine, Daley explains how to determine what is and what is not a links course. Concentrating on Great Britain and Ireland, he also examines the unique characteristics of this early form of seaside golf, how geological processes helped shaped the land, and how links golf differs from inland golf. “Links are the soul of the game—the greatest places on which to play, and they teach us much about the way the game ought to be. So does this book.” —Michael Clayton, Australian professional golfer, golf course architect, and sports commentator

Book excerpt: From the internationally acclaimed author of North of Dawn, Links is a novel that will stand as a classic of modern world literature. Jeebleh is returning to Mogadiscio, Somalia, for the first time in twenty years. But this is not a nostalgia trip—his last residence there was a jail cell. And who could feel nostalgic for a city like this? U.S. troops have come and gone, and the decimated city is ruled by clan warlords and patrolled by qaat-chewing gangs who shoot civilians to relieve their adolescent boredom. Diverted in his pilgrimage to visit his mother’s grave, Jeebleh is asked to investigate the abduction of the young daughter of one of his closest friend’s family. But he learns quickly that any act in this city, particularly an act of justice, is much more complicated than he might have imagined.

Book Playing Through

Download or read book Playing Through written by Curtis Gillespie and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Peter Mayle and James Dodson’s Final Rounds, Curtis Gillespie gives us a delightful and heartwarming story of people, place, and golf. In this funny, wise, and moving book, Curtis Gillespie chronicles the year he spent with his family among the gorse and heather of Gullane, Scotland, site of this year’s Open. Gillespie had hoped to golf at Gullane with his father, who died several years before, and the memory of his father provides the catalyst for both Gillespie’s trip and the book. He writes affectionately about place, family, life, the obsessive nature of golf, and the personalities who are drawn to the sport. Along the way Curtis Gillespie discovers how much he owes his father -- and finds a rich sense of belonging among the local courses and the people who play them. Playing Through is a warm and wonderfully told memoir that transcends the boundaries of travel and sports writing.

Book Missing Links

Download or read book Missing Links written by Jeremy Rich and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremy Rich uses the eccentric life of R. L. Garner (1848-1920) to examine the commercial networks that brought the first apes to America during the Progressive Era, a critical time in the development of ideas about African wildlife, race, and evolution. Garner was a self-taught zoologist and atheist from southwest Virginia. Starting in 1892, he lived on and off in the French colony of Gabon, studying primates and trying to engage U.S. academics with his theories. Most prominently, Garner claimed that he could teach apes to speak human languages and that he could speak the languages of primates. Garner brought some of the first live primates to America, launching a traveling demonstration in which he claimed to communicate with a chimpanzee named Susie. He was often mocked by the increasingly professionalized scientific community, who were wary of his colorful escapades, such as his ill-fated plan to make a New York City socialite the queen of southern Gabon, and his efforts to convince Thomas Edison to finance him in Africa. Yet Garner did influence evolutionary debates, and as with many of his era, race dominated his thinking. Garner's arguments--for example, that chimpanzees were more loving than Africans, or that colonialism constituted a threat to the separation of the races--offer a fascinating perspective on the thinking and attitudes of his times. Missing Links explores the impact of colonialism on Africans, the complicated politics of buying and selling primates, and the popularization of biological racism.
