AUTHORBIO: Dudley Murphy decided to become a lifelong collector of fishing lures at the age of 13, when his grandfather presented him with a gift of old Heddon, Jamison, and Clark lures. As one of the three founders of the National Fishing Lure Collector's Club, Dudley is an active collector with a variety of interest, including fishing. AUTHORBIO: Rick Edmisten was introduced to fishing at age 12 by his father, and by the time he was 18 had developed a keen interest in collecting old lures and tackle. He has hosted a successful fishing tackle collectible show from 1990 to the present, and is recognized as an authority on old tackle. He often appraises estates and collections. REVIEW: This book focuses on the "big ten" companies, metal lures, handmade lures, and the seldom seen experimental lures, and emphasizes antique lures made before 1940. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attraction of a wink, a nod, a discarded snapshot—such feelings permeate our lives, yet we usually dismiss them as insubstantial or meaningless. With The Logic of the Lure, John Paul Ricco argues that it is precisely such fleeting, erotic, and even perverse experiences that will help us create a truly queer notion of ethics and aesthetics, one that recasts sociality and sexuality, place and finitude in ways suggested by the anonymity and itinerant lures of cruising. Shifting our attention from artworks to the work that art does, from subjectivity to becoming, and from static space to taking place, Ricco considers a variety of issues, including the work of Doug Ischar, Tom Burr, and Derek Jarman and the minor architecture of sex clubs, public restrooms, and alleyways.

Book The Lure of Pok mon

Download or read book The Lure of Pok mon written by 中沢新一 and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its humble beginnings as a video game launched in the mid-90s, Pokémon has become a global entertainment franchise, even reaching into the world via augmented reality with the mobile game Pokémon GO. In this book, the author argues that the Pokémon worldview is the best contemporary example of Claude Lévi-Strauss's "savage mind," suggesting that computer games can be viewed as attempts to reconnect the human unconscious with the true, hidden essence of nature. Video games are often thought to draw children out of nature and into isolated, closed spaces. However, the author asserts, the Pokémon series of games, far from standing in opposition to nature, actually seeks to represent the true, hidden essence of the natural world. As the natural environment is transformed around them, the author suggests, children that would once have directly observed and explored nature encounter it through technology instead. Video games and other digital narratives can often be viewed as attempts to reconnect the human unconscious with nature, undoing the separation effected by the scientific, rational thought of Western modernity. The author supports his argument through close analysis of the history and even prehistory of video games in Japanese culture. Drawing on mythology, Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, and other resources, he explores cultural touchstones like Space Invaders, Ultraman, and the RPG as a genre, showing how their rich, direct expression appeals directly to the urges and impulses within children themselves, helping them come to terms with their place in the world.--adapted from publisher's description.
