Book excerpt: The migration of country dwellers towards the urban areas has been a most important factor in the development of the West European society in which we live today. Therefore, those engaged in research and policy making in the social field must acquire a better under standing of this form of migration if they are to deal effectively with a number of the problems confronting them. This is particularly true since the schemes for European integration which are going ahead so rapidly are sure to produce new patterns of migration. At a meeting of the F.A.O. Working Group on Rural Sociology held in Oslo in 1960, it was suggested that an inventory should be made of all available data and studies on the subject of migration in Europe. This suggestion was taken up by the European Society for Rural Sociology and the Netherlands Ministry of Social Work which, after deliberating together, decided to ask the Dutch expert, Dr. G. Beijer, to draw up such an inventory under their joint auspices. As secretary of the Research Group for European Migration Problems (R.E.M.P.), Dr. Beijer has been engaged for many years in an intensive study of the phenomenon of migration.

Yet relatively little is known about the significance of ethnicity in migration processes, or how population movement contributes to immigrant and ethnic integration. Minority internal migration is an emerging field of academic interest in many European countries in the context of high levels of immigration and increased political interest in inter-ethnic relations and place-based policies. This book brings together experts in the fields of migration, ethnicity and diversity from across Europe to examine patterns of residential mobility of minorities, and to synthesise key themes, theories and methods. The analyses presented make important contributions to theories of migration and minority integration and may inform policies that aim to respond to local population change and increasing diversity. The conclusions of the book form an agenda for future research on minority and immigrant internal migration in developed societies.

Situated about halfway between Stockholm and Oslo, Karlstad stands on the River Klara, which reaches north into the mountains of Norway. Founded by King Charles IX of Sweden, whose statue stands in the city centre beside the river, the city celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1984. For many decades the wealth of Karlstad has been based on traditional industries such as iron, timber and paper, and throughout the province of Viinnland there are a considerable number of industrial communities which grew up around mines, ironworks, sawmills and papermills. Even the cultural structure of these communities is heavily marked by the industrial environment in which they developed. However, for over a decade now a major structural reorientation has been taking place and the old industrial structures have been disappearing. For various reasons the importance of large scale, manufacturing companies has declined and as a result of intense development work with new ideas, new entrepreneurs and new technology, we have seen the rapid rise of small companies. In this context, recent research has shown that universities playing an increasingly central role in regional development. Thus the continued development of the University of Karlstad is of significant regional and national interest. Although fairly small in an international perspective (approximately 4000 students) the university is expanding rapidly.
