Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lunatic Asylums: Their Organisation and Management There are few departments of man s labour -m'ore completely specialised and more different from the rest than that. Which deals with the management of Lunatic Asylums. It is therefore somewhat remarkable that no system Of instructions on this matter has hitherto been published, and that it has been left for the writer of this volume to be the first to treat the Subject systematically. That the practice of different individuals in this, or in any other department of labour should be reduced to uniformity is eminently undesirable, and to advocate uniformity Of practice is no part of the Object of this book'; but it is eminently desirable that there Should be agreement as to main principles; that the Objects to.be striven for Should be clearly recognised; that various ways of attaining them Should be discussed; that those already found successful Should be stated; that improved methods should be suggested; and that the isolated and disconnected teachings of experience 'should be brought together, combined, systematised, and made readily available to those in search Of information. Book Civilian Lunatic Asylums During the First World War

Download or read book Civilian Lunatic Asylums During the First World War written by Claire Hilton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the history of asylums and their civilian patients during the First World War, focusing on the effects of wartime austerity and deprivation on the provision of care. While a substantial body of literature on ‘shell shock’ exists, this study uncovers the mental wellbeing of civilians during the war. It provides the first comprehensive account of wartime asylums in London, challenging the commonly held view that changes in psychiatric care for civilians post-war were linked mainly to soldiers’ experiences and treatment. Drawing extensively on archival and published sources, this book examines the impact of medical, scientific, political, cultural and social change on civilian asylums. It compares four asylums in London, each distinct in terms of their priorities and the diversity of their patients. Revealing the histories of the 100,000 civilian patients who were institutionalised during the First World War, this book offers new insights into decision-making and prioritisation of healthcare in times of austerity, and the myriad factors which inform this.

Book An archaeology of lunacy

Download or read book An archaeology of lunacy written by Katherine Fennelly and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An archaeology of lunacy is a materially focused exploration of the first wave of public asylum building in Britain and Ireland, which took place during the late-Georgian and early Victorian period. Examining architecture and material culture, the book proposes that the familiar asylum archetype, usually attributed to the Victorians, was in fact developed much earlier. It looks at the planning and construction of the first public asylums and assesses the extent to which popular ideas about reformed management practices for the insane were applied at ground level. Crucially, it moves beyond doctors and reformers, repopulating the asylum with the myriad characters that made up its everyday existence: keepers, clerks and patients. Contributing to archaeological scholarship on institutions of confinement, the book is aimed at academics, students and general readers interested in the material environment of the historic lunatic asylum.
