Book Technology of Lunar Exploration

Download or read book Technology of Lunar Exploration written by Clifford Cumming and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1006 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 10: Technology of Lunar Exploration is an overview of the technical base of the lunar exploration problem. This volume is organized into six sections encompassing 35 that follow the various stages of accomplishment of a lunar mission, involving landing on or orbiting the moon and returning to the earth. The first section is devoted to the problem of trying to define the lunar environment, emphasizing the theories of the lunar environment as it relates to the internal structure of the moon. This section also describes some activities to achieve a reasonable theory concerning what might be encountered in some of the previous lunar flight programs. The second section explores the problems associated with the limitations imposed upon lunar missions by the launch vehicles and launching facilities. The third section looks at the spacecraft systems and techniques required for lunar missions, particularly the technology and specific subsystems in relation to the requirements imposed by specific lunar mission objectives. The fourth section deals with the actual landing on the moon and the subsequent surface operations, while the fifth section covers the lunar launch, return, flight re-entry, and subsequent landing on earth. The sixth section reports the status of the projects that represent the United States lunar exploration program, which integrates the technologies developed in the preceding sections into certain discrete projects.

Book Moon Lander

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas J. Kelly
  • Publisher : Smithsonian Institution
  • Release : 2012-01-11
  • ISBN : 1588343618
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Moon Lander written by Thomas J. Kelly and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief engineer Thomas J. Kelly gives a firsthand account of designing, building, testing, and flying the Apollo lunar module. It was, he writes, “an aerospace engineer’s dream job of the century.” Kelly’s account begins with the imaginative process of sketching solutions to a host of technical challenges with an emphasis on safety, reliability, and maintainability. He catalogs numerous test failures, including propulsion-system leaks, ascent-engine instability, stress corrosion of the aluminum alloy parts, and battery problems, as well as their fixes under the ever-present constraints of budget and schedule. He also recaptures the exhilaration of hearing Apollo 11’s Neil Armstrong report that “The Eagle has landed,” and the pride of having inadvertently provided a vital “lifeboat” for the crew of the disabled Apollo 13.

Book Site Accessibility and Characteristic Velocity Requirements for Direct descent Lunar Landings

Download or read book Site Accessibility and Characteristic Velocity Requirements for Direct descent Lunar Landings written by Vernon J. Weyers and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A direct descent is one in which the main descent propulsion system burns continuously from lunar approach to touchdown. The characteristic velocity requirement for direct lunar descents is presented as a function of the landing site location relative to the normal impact point. Results are included for translunar trip times of 60, 75, and 90 hours, for specific impulses representative of both Earth storable and cryogenic propulsion systems, for landing sites located anywhere on the lunar surface, and for ignition thrust-to-Earth weight ratios between 0.12 and 10.0. The data presented are useful in determining approximate performance capability and in evaluating tradeoffs during preliminary mission planning studies.

Book Apollo Experience Report

Download or read book Apollo Experience Report written by Michael J. Rutkowski and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses were performed to determine the structural loads caused by maneuvers of the docked Apollo command and service module/lunar module (CSM/LM). Results of CSM/LM docked interface loads analyses and service-propulsion-system engine support structure load analyses are compared with the structural allowable loads of the CSM/LM docked interface and the service-propulsion-system engine thrust mount, respectively, for different phases of spaceflight operations. An analysis also was performed to investigate the loads that resulted from the failure case in which the LM descent propulsion system is started in the full-throttle position.
