Book excerpt: Fabulous and lighthearted food from Rob Feenie's cool Lumiere Tasting Bar, an international culinary hot spot that features casual dishes and sexy cocktails created to the same impeccable standards as the tasting menus in his renowned restaurant. In french, the word lumiere means "light." Chef Rob Feenie's Lumiere Restaurant in Vancouver has lit up the food world in Canada and the United States with his brilliant dishes that combine French sophistication, Asian simplicity and the finest North American ingredients. After the success of Lumiere, Rob Feenie launched the Lumiere Tasting Bar, a more casual, intimate space with a seductive glow. On any given night crowds would line up in front of its doors to get a chance to dine from the select ever-changing menu that features tapas-sized portions of sublime cuisine and an array of sophisticated cocktails. Lumiere Light presents more than 90 of its most famous dishes. With their stylish sense of humour and sinful twists on comfort food, the recipes include a decadent beef-dip sandwich filled with short ribs cooked in wine and port, a shepherd's pie of duck confit, caramelized onions and truffle pomme puree. There are also salads and soups and a selection of irresistible desserts like Chocolate Fondant with Honey Tangerine Marmalade and India Spice Ice Cream. The cocktail recipes are versions of classics, some forgotten, like the Sazerac (rye and absinthe) or the French 75 (gin and champagne), and some more familiar ones like the Sidecar. Commentary and chef's tips are provided by Feenie throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Lumière is perhaps best known in the U.S. for his seminal role in the invention of cinema, but his most important contribution to the history of photography was the autochrome. Engagingly written and marvelously illustrated with over 300 images, The Lumière Autochrome: History, Technology, and Preservation tells the fascinating story of the first industrially produced form of color photography. Initial chapters present the Lumière family enterprise, set out the challenges posed by early color photography, and recount the invention, rise, and eventual decline of the autochrome, which for the first four decades of the twentieth century was the most widely used form of commercial color photography. The book then treats the technology of the autochrome, including the technical challenges of plate fabrication, described in step-by-step detail, and a thorough account of autochrome manufacture. A long final chapter provides in-depth recommendations concerning the preservation of these vulnerable objects, including proper storage and display guidelines. There are also engaging portfolios throughout the book showcasing autochrome photographs from around the world as part of an initiative founded by the French banker Albert Kahn, as well as engrossing testimonials by children of men who worked in the Lumière factories in the early twentieth century. The appendix includes transcriptions and facsimile reproductions from the Lumière notebooks as well as original patent documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City of Light. For many, these four words instantly conjure late nineteenth-century Paris and the garish colors of Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic posters. More recently, the Eiffel Tower’s nightly show of sparkling electric lights has come to exemplify our fantasies of Parisian nightlife. Though we reflect longingly on such scenes, in Illuminated Paris, Hollis Clayson shows that there’s more to these clichés than meets the eye. In this richly illustrated book, she traces the dramatic evolution of lighting in Paris and how artists responded to the shifting visual and cultural scenes that resulted from these technologies. While older gas lighting produced a haze of orange, new electric lighting was hardly an improvement: the glare of experimental arc lights—themselves dangerous—left figures looking pale and ghoulish. As Clayson shows, artists’ representations of these new colors and shapes reveal turn-of-the-century concerns about modernization as electric lighting came to represent the harsh glare of rapidly accelerating social change. At the same time, in part thanks to American artists visiting the city, these works of art also produced our enduring romantic view of Parisian glamour and its Belle Époque.

She's desperate to revive her struggling career, she's passionate about movies, and Cannes is the heart and soul of cinematic glamour and tradition, the place where film legends are born, made, or left withering on the vine. But Cannes is in France, and going to France means facing painful memories of Nattie's brief childhood in Paris and the bizarre accident that killed her mother and forced her mother's lover, Michel Claudel, to ship Nattie off to the New Mexico desert to live with a father she had never met. So France is Nattie's personal nightmare -- but with the bank foreclosing on her house in Los Angeles, it is a nightmare she must finally face. The moment she sets foot in Paris, Nattie's past hits her with the force of a mistral wind. Long-forgotten sights and fragrances and the melody of the language stir up hazy recollections of her mother and Claudel. And then she's whisked away to Cannes and engulfed by the film festival, juggling movies, celebrities, her demanding editor, a seductive ex-lover, and a reckless starlet hell-bent on providing juicy copy. When Nattie discovers a mysterious link between her mother and a mercurial French director named Jacques Vidanne, she turns to the only man she can trust, with questions that may be too painful to answer. Accustomed as she is to digging into the lives of movie stars, she finds that digging into her own life threatens to unravel her reality. In the end, she must make a choice -- to move forward toward her future or to remain in the shadow of her past. The Lumiere Affair is filled with delicious insider movie dish from a seasoned celebrity journalist, but it is also the tender and charming story of a woman's journey to find herself. From California to Corsica, you will fall in love with Nattie Conway and root for her -- all the way to the Martini Shot.

Book Dictionary of Electronics

Download or read book Dictionary of Electronics written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special interest in electronics all over the world is due to its decisive role in the scien tific and technical progress now taking place in all fields of modern technology. Electronics also plays a decisive role in the development of science, providing as it does the technical basis for various scientific experiments. The role of electronics in the development of the world's culture also deserves a special mention. That is why it is hoped that the English-German French-Dutch-Russian Dictionary of Electronics, which contains some 9.000 entries and is jointly published by Kluwer Technische Boeken, B.V. (Deventer, Holland) and Ruski Yazyk Publishers (Moscow, USSR) will be favourably received. In accordance with existing international tradition, the term «electronics» covers several fields known in Soviet classification as elec tronics proper, radio engineering, and wire communication. The entries included in this dictionary have been selected in accordance with the international understanding of the term «electronics». One of the main difficulties encountered by the compilers was that although according to some calculations the number of terms used in special literature on electronics exceeds 50.000, the vocabulary of the dictionary had to be restricted to only 9.000 entries. Therefore this dictionary cannot claim to be comprehensive. Its purpose is to enable a wide range of specialists in various countries to find the English, German, French, Dutch, or Russian equivalents of the principal and most up-to-date terms in the field of electronics. Most attention has been paid to quantum electronics, fibre optics, optoelectronics, integrated circuit technology, radiolocation and radionavigation, pulse technique, holography, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of Wierzbicka's theory of meaning, which is based on conceptual primitives and semantic universals, using empirical findings from a wide range of languages. While addressed primarily to linguists, the book deals with highly topical and controversial issues of central importance to several disciplines, including anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. - ;Conceptual primitives and semantic universals are the cornerstones of a semantic theory which Anna Wierzbicka has been developing for many years. Semantics: Primes and Universals is a major synthesis of her work, presenting a full and systematic exposition of that theory in a non-technical and readable way. It delineates a full set of universal concepts, as they have emerged from large-scale investigations across a wide range of languages undertaken by the author and her colleagues. On the basis of empirical cross-linguistic studies it vindicates the old notion of the 'psychic unity of mankind', while at the same time offering a framework for the rigorous description of different languages and cultures. - ;A major synthesis of Anna Wierzbicka's work -
