Book Break These Rules

Download or read book Break These Rules written by Luke Reynolds and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book actually breaks the rules just by existing. This much sheer coolness should not be allowed in one volume!” —Jordan Sonnenblick, bestselling author of Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie In Break These Rules, 35 favorite middle grades and young adult authors—including Kathryn Erskine, A. S. King, Matthew Quick, Sara Zarr, Gary Schmidt, and many others—speak directly to their readers and advise them to break the boundaries of conformity. In moving, inspiring, often funny essays they take on many of the powerfully inhibiting, often unspoken “rules” of adolescence, such as Boys shouldn’t be gentle, kind, and caring; Thou shalt wear Abercrombie & Fitch to fit in; You must be a jock or a nerd--you can’t be both; and Girls should “act like girls.” It is often through reading fiction that kids start to question such restrictions, so who better to speak to them directly than their favorite novelists? The book is focused on encouraging students to break rules in their own lives—a prospect many teens and tweens will find thrilling and fresh. Luke Reynolds has taught middle and high school English in Connecticut and Massachusetts, as well as composition at Northern Arizona University. He is the author of A Call to Creativity and Keep Calm and Query On.

Book Jesus Exposition of the Old Testament in Luke s Gospel

Download or read book Jesus Exposition of the Old Testament in Luke s Gospel written by Charles Kimball and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents an inductive, exegetical analysis of Jesus' exegetical methods and expositions in Luke's Gospel in light of first-century Jewish exegetical methods via an examination of the eight Lukan pericopes in which Jesus expounds explicit Old Testament quotations. This study offers the following conclusions: In Luke's Gospel Jesus expounded Scripture as the basis for understanding his person and ministry, teaching his followers and inquirers, and debating his religious opponents. He employed many of the exegetical methods of ancient Judaism. Yet he frequently offered interpretations of Scripture that were radically different from other Jewish teachers because of his superior understanding of Scripture and his application of Scripture to himself. In turn, he influenced the early church's biblical expositions in considerable measure. Jesus expounded Scripture for Christological and doctrinal lessons. In his Christological expositions, he made an eschatological application of certain biblical texts to himself, claiming to be the fulfillment of Old testament messianic prophecies. In his doctrinal expositions, he corrected traditional Jewish interpretation, claiming a superior exegesis of Scripture. The Christological expositions employed pesher fulfillment motifs and several midrashic techiniques to show that the

Book Luke the Priest

  • Author : Rick Strelan
  • Publisher : Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780754662594
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Luke the Priest written by Rick Strelan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the authority and status of the author of Luke-Acts. What authority did he have to write a Gospel, to interpret the Jewish Scriptures and traditions of Israel, to interpret the Jesus traditions, and to update the narrative with a second volume with its interpretation of Paul and the other apostles who appear in the Acts narrative? Rick Strelan constructs the author as a Jewish Priest, examining such issues as writing and orality, authority and tradition, and the status and role of priests. The analysis is set within the context of scholarly opinion about the author, the intended audience and other related issues.

Book Luke and the Restoration of Israel

Download or read book Luke and the Restoration of Israel written by David Ravens and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ravens argues that Luke's belief in God's restoration of Israel provides the key context for understanding Luke-Acts. His attitudes to Jews, his surveys of Israel's history and his interest in the Samaritans combine to suggest his wider, pre-Davidic, view of Israel-a view that becomes the pattern for the restored Israel under its Davidic king. Luke's belief leads him to present Christology and atonement in ways that cohere with Jewish hopes and to correct apparently anti-Jewish elements in Paul's letters and Matthew's Gospel. This theme also determines his account of the gentile mission and his pastoral concern for unity.

Book A Theology of Luke and Acts

Download or read book A Theology of Luke and Acts written by Darrell L. Bock and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work by Darrell Bock thoroughly explores the theology of Luke’s gospel and the book of Acts. In his writing, Luke records the story of God working through Jesus to usher in a new era of promise and Spirit-enablement so that the people of God can be God’s people even in the midst of a hostile world. It is a message the church still needs today. Bock both covers major Lukan themes and sets forth the distinctive contribution of Luke-Acts to the New Testament and the canon of Scripture, providing readers with an in-depth and holistic grasp of Lukan theology in the larger context of the Bible. I. Howard Marshall: “A remarkable achievement that should become the first port of call for students in this central area of New Testament Theology.” Craig S. Keener: “Bock’s excellent exploration of Luke’s theological approach and themes meets an important need in Lukan theology.”

Book The Character and Purpose of Luke s Christology

Download or read book The Character and Purpose of Luke s Christology written by Douglas Buckwalter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's christology is carefully designed. Luke portrays the exalted Jesus as God's co-equal by the kinds of things he does and says from heaven. Through the Holy Spirit, the divine name and personal manifestations, Jesus behaves toward people in Luke-Acts as does Yahweh in the Old Testament. His power and knowledge are supreme. Jesus sovereignly reigns over Israel, the church, the powers of darkness and the world. Luke deepens this portrait by depicting Jesus as deity who by nature behaves as servant: the earthly Jesus acted among his people as one who serves; the exalted Jesus continues serving his people by strengthening and encouraging them in their witness of him to the world. That the believers in Acts resemble the way Jesus behaved in the Gospel means that they too are now imaging some of his servant-like character in their witness of him.
