Book Protecting Human Rights and Building Peace in Post Violence Societies

Download or read book Protecting Human Rights and Building Peace in Post Violence Societies written by Nasia Hadjigeorgiou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the relationship between protecting human rights and building peace in post-violence societies. It explores the conditions that must be present, and strategies that should be adopted, for the former to contribute to the latter. The author argues that human rights can aid peacebuilding efforts by helping victims of past violence to articulate their grievance, and by encouraging the state to respond to and provide them with a meaningful remedy. This usually happens either through a process of adjudication, whereby human rights can offer guidance to the judiciary as to the best way to address such grievances, or through the passing and implementation of human rights laws and policies that seek to promote peace. However, this positive relationship between human rights and peace is both qualified and context specific. Through an interdisciplinary and comparative analysis of four case studies, the book identifies the conditions that can support the effective use of human rights as peacebuilding tools. Developing these, the book recommends a series of strategies that peacebuilders should adopt and rely on. Winner of the Constantinos Emilianides Award in Law for 2020 (joint conferment).

Book excerpt: Though Cyprus is a small country, its cuisine features a large variety of dishes due to the many different cultural influences affecting the island's history. There is also a substantial variation in climate around the country... from sunny beaches to snow-capped mountains. Cyprus cuisine has a Mediterranean allure, mixing Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors and ingredients. Many Cypriot families still make home-made olive oil every year, and neighbors regularly exchange excess bounty of homegrown fruits and vegetables, including pomelo, grapes, carobs, figs, oranges, lemons, cantaloupe, bergamot, medlars, almonds, kumquats, cactus pears, and, of course, olives. Most Cypriot dishes are not particularly hot or spicy, though there is ample use of local herbs such as wild oregano, rosemary, mint, parsley, basil, cinnamon and coriander. Spices such as allspice, cloves, mastic and mahleb powders can be found in many sweets and baked goods. The book features 68 recipes, featuring all of these Cypriot culinary delights... and more. Illustrated in full color, Cyprus Cuisine offers a wide variety of Cypriot dishes, ranging from drinks to desserts, to soups, salads, small bites, breads and pastries, pickles, dips and main courses.

Book Living In The Real Cyprus

Download or read book Living In The Real Cyprus written by Vic Heaney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyprus ticks all the boxes. Sun. Sea. Cheap food and drink. Friendly, smiling people. How would you like to live there? Is this island heaven too good to be true? Surely there can be no darker side? Is there no lingering resentment from the colonial period and the bitter and vicious guerrilla war which ended it? What happens when Vic and his wife Gay come into contact with the real Cyprus, away from the garish, overdeveloped tourist resorts? They quickly find people even more friendly and generous than in the towns, although less likely to speak English. But they also discover terrible cruelty to animals; winter weather worse than tourists are led to believe; snakes, dangerous driving and earthquakes; hunters, armed to the teeth, excited and trigger happy; institutionalised hatred between Greek and Turkish Cypriots; racism and sexual exploitation of women tricked into coming to Cyprus from abroad. Is paradise lost?

  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book Cyprus written by David Hannay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-26 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprus problem has defeated all attempts to resolve it for more than forty years. From 1996 onwards the UN, with strong support from the US, the UK and other EU members, mounted the most sustained of all the efforts to reach an agreement, so that a reunited Cyprus could join the EU in May 2004. Although it came closer to success than any previous attempt, this one failed too. From his unique position as the former British Special Representative for Cyprus, Lord (formerly Sir David) Hannay tells the story of these negotiations. What results is a revealing first-hand account of a profoundly complex situation, an exceptional reference point for all those interested in the region.
