Book Luck Loss Laughs

Download or read book Luck Loss Laughs written by Raymond Dobson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any guy raised in the 40s and 50s had to just have a WASPY last name, blue eyes and a degree, any degree. Then, just show up on time, catch the 5:53 home, mow the lawn, cruise through the 60's, 70's, 80's, and on to retirement. Unless of course, you didn't do those things. That would've been me. "A moving target is hard to hit," a Drill Instructor extorted us boots in Parris Island. I knew that already, had always, would always, continue to be a fast-moving target, better yet, a lucky one. So, Dear Reader, hitch hike along with me, back down that ol' memory blacktop; perhaps nudging your own memory, of those; no doubt, often funny, sometimes poignant -- unfortunately -- fading times? Climb under the kindling wood desks of Saint Agnes Catholic Elementary in the 40s, preparing for the inevitable, Russian thermonuclear attack. Join my teen brothers and I, cruising Jersey Shore beaches and Boardwalk dance halls, or with my mates and I, trash talking braggadocio and machismo on the fantail of a Marine troopship or some seedy Carolina, Country Music Roadhouse. Travail back in time on the back of my noisy Harley, the rumble seat or truck bed of a sputtering old V-8. Hitch hike one more time -- across country in in the 60s. Join my original family of eight in the ex-Bootlegger's Limo in the 40s or later, with my own brood of six.in the mandatory, 70s suburban-designate, green and fake wood Country Squire; strewn with kids, pets, plastic trophies and MacDonald wrappers. Sorry not much of my recent times -- will have to wait until those times get downloaded from my short term memory to my long term memory-- the one that still works . . . .

Book Lucky Bastard

Download or read book Lucky Bastard written by Joe Buck and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling memoir, the announcer of the biggest sporting events in the country—including the 2017 Super Bowl and this century's most-watched, historic, Chicago Cubs–winning World Series—reveals why he is one lucky bastard. Sports fans see Joe Buck everywhere: broadcasting one of the biggest games in the NFL every week, calling the World Series every year, announcing the Super Bowl every three years. They know his father, Jack Buck, is a broadcasting legend and that he was beloved in his adopted hometown of St. Louis. Yet they have no idea who Joe really is. Or how he got here. They don’t know how he almost blew his career. They haven’t read his funniest and most embarrassing stories or heard about his interactions with the biggest sports stars of this era. They don’t know how hard he can laugh at himself—or that he thinks some of his critics have a point. And they don’t know what it was really like to grow up in his father’s shadow. Joe and Jack were best friends, but it wasn’t that simple. Jack, the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals for almost fifty years, helped Joe get his broadcasting start at eighteen. But Joe had to prove himself, first as a minor league radio announcer and then on local TV, national TV with ESPN, and then finally on FOX. He now has a successful, Emmy-winning career, but only after a lot of dues-paying, learning, and pretty damn entertaining mistakes that are recounted in this book. In his memoir, Joe takes us through his life on and off the field. He shares the lessons he learned from his father, the errors he made along the way, and the personal mountain he climbed and conquered, all of which have truly made him a Lucky Bastard.

Only in moving beyond the past can they forge a way ahead not only for themselves, but for their loved ones. In so doing, each finds something vital that will give them the power and resilience they need to meet the greatest challenge of all. Religious belief and personal history wars with sanity and wisdom in this first novel of love, freedom, and the strength of friendship. Susannah Eanes explores the deep mysticism of family history, deception, and forgiveness in the tale of two women who are forced to confront the legacy of their youth, set in the deep south of the last decades of the twentieth century, and written in the unique language and viewpoints of the characters themselves.

Book Vacationland

  • Author : Sarah Stonich
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2013-03-25

  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Vacationland written by Sarah Stonich and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a lake in northernmost Minnesota, you might find Naledi Lodge—only two cabins still standing, its pathways now trodden mostly by memories. And there you might meet Meg, or the ghost of the girl she was, growing up under her grandfather’s care in a world apart and a lifetime ago. Now an artist, Meg paints images “reflected across the mirrors of memory and water,” much as the linked stories of Vacationland cast shimmering spells across distance and time. Those whose paths have crossed at Naledi inhabit Vacationland: a man from nearby Hatchet Inlet who knew Meg back when, a Sarajevo refugee sponsored by two parishes who can’t afford “their own refugee,” aged sisters traveling to fulfill a fateful pact once made at the resort, a philandering ad man, a lonely Ojibwe stonemason, and a haiku-spouting girl rescued from a bog. Sarah Stonich, whose work has been described as “unexpected and moving” by the Chicago Tribune and “a well-paced feast” by the Los Angeles Times, weaves these tales of love and loss, heartbreak and redemption into a rich novel of interconnected and disjointed lives. Vacationland is a moving portrait of a place—at once timeless and of the moment, composed of conflicting dreams and shared experience—and of the woman bound to it by legacy and sometimes longing, but not necessarily by choice.
