Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible Translated From the French But I have graver motives for preferring the Cath olic religion. Do not consider this as a compliment; I should say the same thing were I addressing a Pro testant minister. Notwithstanding the prejudice of birth, I must acknowledge that your religion has a certain air of authority, which the other does not pos sess. Its extensiveness, its order, its antiquity, even the pomp of its ceremonies, and the beauty of its edi fices, all conspire to attract me. I feel, nevertheless, the necessity of being better acquainted with a sys tem which I am desirous of embracing; and while waiting for fresh light on the subject, I have applied myself to the study of The Christian's Manual, which I had used at church, almost without thinking of what I read. Book Lucilla or the Reading of the Bible Translated From the French

Download or read book Lucilla or the Reading of the Bible Translated From the French written by Adolphe Monod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible Translated From the French The work of which a translation is here presented to the English reader, has recently been published in France, where the whole of the first impression was sold in a very short period. It is the production of a Protestant minister of deep piety, of pre-eminent talents, and of ardent zeal in the cause of Christianity. His design is to prove, that the Holy Scriptures are inspired of God, and are, consequently, of divine authority; and that it is at once the privilege and duty of all people to read them with a reference to their personal salvation. The volume is therefore, on the one hand, an antidote to Infidelity which regards the Bible as a merely human composition, and to Popery, on the other, which would restrict the reading of the sacred books. The manner in winch the author has executed his task is worthy of high praise. His reasoning is beautifully simple, lucid, and strong; and his spirit, kind, benevolent, serious, and firm. He speaks with authority, for he thoroughly understands his subject; and with tender affection, for his heart yearns over those who obstinately reject the word of God, and who are passing to their final account ignorant of its blessed truths. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration of the Bible The following Essay on the Inspiration of the Bible, has been prepared from the first part of an interesting book entitled Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible. Originally written in French by Rev. Mr. Monod, recently translated and published by the London Religious Tract Society. The design of the Author in that work is to show, in the first - place, that the Bible is the W ord of God, and consequently of Divine authority; and in the second place, that it is at once the privilege and the duty of all men to read it with reference to their personal salvation. The first part, the substance of which is given in the following pages, is in the form of Letters, and a Dialogue between a French Abbe, Mr. Lasalle and Lucilla, the iwife of Mr. L., which for several reasons it was thought best to abridge and condense into a continuous discourse. In doing this, great care has been taken to preserve Mr. Monod's argument entire, and his language so far as was practicable. The portions omitted belong not to the substance but the form of the discussion; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Brokers of Public Trust written by Laurie Nussdorfer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fast-growing legal system and economy in medieval and early modern Rome saw a rapid increase in the need for written documents. Brokers of Public Trust examines the emergence of the modern notarial profession—free market scribes responsible for producing original legal documents and their copies. Notarial acts often go unnoticed, but they are essential to understanding the history of writing practices and attitudes toward official documentation. Based on new archival research, Brokers of Public Trust focuses on the government officials, notaries, and consumers who regulated, wrote, and purchased notarial documents in Rome between the 14th and 18th centuries. Historian Laurie Nussdorfer chronicles the training of professional notaries and the construction of public archives, explaining why notarial documents exist, who made them, and how they came to be regarded as authoritative evidence. In doing so, Nussdorfer describes a profession of crucial importance to the people and government of the time, as well as to scholars who turn to notarial documents as invaluable and irreplaceable historical sources. This magisterial new work brings fresh insight into the essential functions of early modern Roman society and the development of the modern state.
