Book excerpt: Apuleius, one of the great stylists of Latin literature, was born ca. 125 AD in Madauros to a politically prominent family and received an elite education in the provincial capital Carthage and at Athens, where he began a lifelong allegiance to Platonic philosophy. In the later 150s, he married Pudentilla of Oea, a wealthy widow, and seems to have enjoyed a distinguished public career in Africa and perhaps as an advocate in Rome. Although Apuleius is best known for his picaresque novel Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass (LCL 44, 453), he also wrote and declaimed on a wide variety of subjects. This edition contains the other surviving works of Apuleius that are considered genuine. Apologia is a speech in which Apuleius defends himself against in-laws who had accused him of having used sinister means, including magic, to induce Pudentilla to marry him. The Florida is a collection of twenty-three excerpts from speeches by Apuleius. De Deo Socratis (On Socrates' God) locates Socrates' invisible guide and protector (daimonion) within the more general concept of daimones as forces intermediary between gods and humans. This edition, new to the Loeb Classical Library, offers fresh translations and texts based on the best critical editions.

Book excerpt: This is probably the oldest complete text you will have the opportunity to read. "The Golden Ass" is the only novel that has survived intact from the time of the Roman Empire. It was written by Lucius Apuleius in the 2nd century AD and tells the adventures and troubles faced by the protagonist, also named Lucius, who at a certain point in the story is transformed into a donkey and experiences extraordinary situations, including some of a sexual nature. As is common in many ancient texts, the main story is interrupted to include several short tales, the most famous of which is "Cupid and Psyche." "The Golden Ass" has been a source of inspiration for numerous classic writers such as Boccaccio, Cervantes, and Shakespeare, and is part of the renowned collection "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die."

It is a brilliant, lively, and colourful piece and is the only Latin forensic oration preserved from the second century A.D., providing important evidence for contemporary North African life.

Book excerpt: "On the God of Socrates" is a work on the existence and nature of demons, the intermediaries between gods and humans. This treatise was roughly attacked by Augustine of Hippo. It contains a passage comparing gods and kings which is the first recorded occurrence of the proverb "familiarity breeds contempt".Apuleius (/ˌpjᵿˈliːəs/; also called Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis and in Berber: Afulay c. 124 - c. 170 AD) was a Latin-language prose writer, platonist philosopher and rhetorian. He was a Numidian who lived under the Roman Empire and was from Madauros (now M'Daourouch, Algeria). He studied Platonism in Athens, travelled to Italy, Asia Minor, and Egypt and was an initiate in several cults or mysteries. The most famous incident in his life was when he was accused of using magic to gain the attentions (and fortune) of a wealthy widow. He declaimed and then distributed a witty tour de force in his own defense before the proconsul and a court of magistrates convened in Sabratha, near ancient Tripoli, Libya. This is known as the Apologia. His most famous work is his bawdy picaresque novel, the Metamorphoses, otherwise known as The Golden Ass. It is the only Latin novel that has survived in its entirety. It relates the ludicrous adventures of one Lucius, who experiments with magic and is accidentally turned into a donkey.
