Book excerpt: The mysteries of the monoliths are revealed in this inspired conclusion to the Hugo Award–winning Space Odyssey series—“there are marvels aplenty” (The New York Times). On an ill-fated mission to Jupiter in 2001, the mutinous supercomputer HAL sent crewmembers David Bowman and Frank Poole into the frozen void of space. Bowman’s strange transformation into a Star Child is traced through the novels 2010 and 2061. But now, a thousand years after his death, Frank Poole is brought back to life—and thrust into a world far more technically advanced than the one he left behind. Poole discovers a world of human minds interfacing directly with computers, genetically engineered dinosaur servants, and massive space elevators built around the equator. He also discovers an impending threat to humanity lurking within the enigmatic monoliths. To fight it, Poole must join forces with Bowman and HAL, now fused into one corporeal consciousness—and the only being with the power to thwart the monoliths’ mysterious creators. “3001 is not just a page-turner, plugged in to the great icons of HAL and the monoliths, but a book of wisdom too, pithy and provocative.” —New Scientist

Book Lucifer is Christos Inner Light

Download or read book Lucifer is Christos Inner Light written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more in a name than the profane is prepared to understand, or the learned mystic to explain. Lucifer is the first radiant beam that destroys the lethal darkness of night. Stars teach as well as shine. When named Venus, the bright planet-star becomes the symbol of dawn, the chaste Aurora. Lucifer-Venus, the sister planet of our Earth, was sacrificed to the ambition of our little globe to show the latter as the “chosen” planet of the Lord. Lucifer and Venus are the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” Aphrodite-Venus is dual. The dawn Aphrodite is daughter of Ouranos or Heaven: Her dusk counterpart, who presides over earthly unions, is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. The morning planet is also dual: Lucifer-Venus was dedicated to the Great Mother and symbolized by the Golden Calf, a heifer of either sex, that was male at rising and female at sunset, the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” “Lucifer,” our London periodical, has proved itself consistent to its originally declared policy. “Lucifer” began waving its torch before the windows of Lambeth Palace, not because of any personal feeling against His Grace of Canterbury, as an individual, but against the officialism he represents, which is at once selfish and un-Christian to the last degree. Theosophical charity demands that time and space should be given to the weaker members of the Society so that they discover their ignorance and cleanse themselves of the ferocious selfishness, narrow-mindedness, and conceit which have made their playing at “the higher life” an almost comical travesty. Unrelenting charity toward the shortcomings of one’s neighbour, and untiring charity with regard to the needs of one poorer than oneself, is the focus and scope of all theosophical teachings, the synthesis of all and every virtue. The foreordaining and predestining fiend-God and Satan, his subordinate agent, are human inventions: they are two of the most morally repulsive and horrible theological dogmas that the nightmares of light-hating monks have ever evolved out of their unclean fancies. Aphrodite-Venus is dual: the dawn Aphrodite is daughter of Ouranos or Heaven; her dusk counterpart, who presides over earthly unions, is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Similarly, the morning planet is dual: Lucifer-Venus was dedicated to the Great Mother and symbolized by the Golden Calf, a heifer of either sex, that was male at rising and female at sunset, the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.”

Book excerpt: Arthur C. Clarke’s 2061: Odyssey Three is truly a masterful elaboration on one man’s epic vision of the universe. Only rarely does a novelist weave a tapestry so compelling that it captures the imagination of the entire world. But that is precisely what Arthur C. Clarke accomplished with 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is even more unusual that an author is able to complement so well-received an invention with an equally successful sequel. But Arthur C. Clarke’s 2010: Odyssey Two enthralled a huge audience worldwide. Now, in 2061: Odyssey Three, Arthur C. Clarke revisits the most famous future ever imagined, as two expeditions into space are inextricably tangled by human necessity and the immutable laws of physics. And Heywood Floyd, survivor of two previous encounters with the mysterious monoliths, must once again confront Dave Bowman—or whatever Bowman has become—a newly independent HAL, and the power of an alien race that has decided Mankind is to play a part in the evolution of the galaxy whether it wishes to or not.

Book Hierophantic Landscapes

Download or read book Hierophantic Landscapes written by Richard Leviton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth is poised to make a great disclosure. Its a hierophant. But whats a hierophant? A person who reveals the holy light. But it can also be a landscape or a planet. And whats the holy light? It is the structure of reality and consciousness, a map of the heavenly realms, the engineering blueprint of Creation. Some people call this imminent disclosure the Apocalypse and run for cover. But that is mistaken. Apocalypse means the revelation of the divine revelation. It means the end of our picture of the world as we know it. The world itself will be fine, even better than fine. Splendid. Illumined. The Architect of reality lays down His cards, face up, and you see the whole deck. Here is the truth of yourself and the Earth. How will this disclosure work? What we call sacred sites and holy landscapes will start revealing themselves in full to us in all their geomantic and visionary richness. Thats the inner patterning of their design, their arrays of Light temples and subtle palaces primed for our visionary adventures and edification. The Earth needs us to have these adventures and visions because thats how we keep the planet healthy. Hierophantic Landscapes visits five landscapes from Norway and England to California and Mexico, providing firsthand reports on the visions and adventures of a small band of geomancers as they seek to unravel the mysteries of the Earth. Maybe not such a small band, because along the way we encounter angels, landscape devas, Nature Spirits, and otherworldly mentors, and revel in vistas of the ancient past of the Earth when that revelation was as fresh as a sunrise, as it will soon be again.

Book Dante

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barbara Reynolds
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2007-08-28
  • ISBN : 1593761627
  • Pages : 481 pages

Download or read book Dante written by Barbara Reynolds and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante is one of the towering figures of European literature, yet there remain a surprising number of questions about his life and works; Who was the leader that would bring peace to the world, as Virgil and Beatrice prophesied in the Commedia? Who was Beatrice, really? Was De Vulgari Eloquentia truly a treatise on the art of writing? Did he need a medicinal muse? Dante scholar and translator Barbara Reynolds contends the master used cannabis to soar to greater creative heights. Besides proposing a solution to the famous prophecies, this lively, engaging, and elegantly written biography contains a provocative new idea in virtually every chapter, offering alternative interpretations of his work. Drawing from an impressive array of sources, Reynolds provides a comprehensive analysis of the poet, placing him within the context of his culture and society to deepen our understanding of a complicated man who was irritable, opinionated, and vengeful—and an extraordinary genius.

Book Ulysses in Black

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrice D. Rankine
  • Publisher : Univ of Wisconsin Press
  • Release : 2008-12-30
  • ISBN : 0299220036
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Ulysses in Black written by Patrice D. Rankine and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Patrice D. Rankine asserts that the classics need not be a mark of Eurocentrism, as they have long been considered. Instead, the classical tradition can be part of a self-conscious, prideful approach to African American culture, esthetics, and identity. Ulysses in Black demonstrates that, similar to their white counterparts, African American authors have been students of classical languages, literature, and mythologies by such writers as Homer, Euripides, and Seneca. Ulysses in Black closely analyzes classical themes (the nature of love and its relationship to the social, Dionysus in myth as a parallel to the black protagonist in the American scene, misplaced Ulyssean manhood) as seen in the works of such African American writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Countee Cullen. Rankine finds that the merging of a black esthetic with the classics—contrary to expectations throughout American culture—has often been a radical addressing of concerns including violence against blacks, racism, and oppression. Ultimately, this unique study of black classicism becomes an exploration of America’s broader cultural integrity, one that is inclusive and historic. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine
