Book excerpt: From the strange adventures of Oona Neeci… A New England family, with roots older than the trees from which the ill-famed Salem witches were hanged, grieves for the man whose lost life strengthened their love for him. Moving quickly to fill the void left by the family’s sudden loss is Oona Neeci, the brilliant, young metaphysicist and sorceress. Oona’s abrupt relocation puts into motion an unforeseen struggle among three powerful witches, and a desperate effort to prevent what has already happened. Written with passion and care, Lucia’s Revenge is exciting, clever, and earnestly constructed, at times poetic and lyrical, with intense characters and a strong, well-paced plot. Lucia’s Revenge offers a new voice of captivating, unfiltered adult fiction

Book excerpt: "Lucia is a story that is at once desperate and uplifting, a story that touches you deep in your soul. If you only read one more book this year, it should be Lucia." - Sharon Bennett Connolly, author of Silk and the SwordWhat makes life worth living for a slave of Rome? The promise of vengeance, no matter how long it takes! At eight years old, Lucia is torn from the life she knew. Her village burned to the ground and parents murdered by Romans, she is kidnapped, sold and shipped abroad to the Villa Tempestatis in Britannia to serve the young Roman army officer Castus.Faced with a bleak future of decades of servitude to her master, as well as sadistic brutality at the hands of his manageress, Paltucca, she finds herself fixated by one thought alone: vengeance. Yet Villa Tempestatis, with its picturesque surroundings in Britannia's green countryside, offers a life that's a little easier than elsewhere in the Roman empire. The slaves form strong bonds of love and friendship, enjoy feasts and holiday celebrations together, and are even allowed, sometimes, to start a family. Many of them are happy enough with their lot. Despite that, every moment of Lucia's life is blighted by her hatred for Castus and Paltucca, and only seeing them both destroyed will bring her a measure of peace, even if it takes decades of work and planning... This standalone novel from the bestselling author of The Druid tells the tale of one woman's life against a richly woven backdrop of love and hate, revenge and redemption, and finally gives this forgotten class of people a voice. PRAISE FOR LUCIA "A compelling 5* story from McKay, an author who continues to amaze me with his writing." - David's Book Blurg "McKay changes gear and slips easily into a different world and commands it from the start. This is the Shawshank Redemption of revenge stories." - David N. Humphrey, author of Valguard - Knight of Coins "With the triumph that Lucia turns into, the good Mr McKay is clearly proving he is so overflowing with good ideas and writing spirit that he can throw out Lucia as a one-off, away from the Robin Hood series that made his name, or the awesome success that is the Warrior Druid of Britain series." - Steve Denton of Speesh Reads

  • Author : Raúl Márquez Porras
  • Publisher : Springer Nature

Download or read book Vindicatory Justice written by Raúl Márquez Porras and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new theoretical approach to the analysis of the law/revenge binary, and attempts to dismantle the common idea of revenge as lacking any legal, moral or rational dimension. In contrast, the book puts forward a model of a complex system of justice—which it terms 'vindicatory'—wherein vendetta constitutes an authorized action, the core of which does not (just) lie in vengeance but also in settlement procedures for peace—or 'composition.' The first part of the book ("Vindicatory Justice: Conceptual Analyses and Forerunners") seeks to identify the nature of vindicatory justice and to shed light on the structure of so-called vindicatory systems. In turn, the second part ("Mapping Vindicatory Justice") illustrates, using examples gathered from a range of sociolegal contexts, the dynamic relationship between composition and authorized revenge in vindicatory systems. Taken as a whole, the volume shows that applying a longue durée historical perspective to the study of revenge systems allows us to clearly recognize composition and authorized revenge as features of the same legal system, even though one of them may seem predominant (or more eye-catching) than the other in certain cultural settings.

Book The Unmaking of Fascist Aesthetics

Download or read book The Unmaking of Fascist Aesthetics written by Kriss Ravetto and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In works by filmmakers from Bertolucci to Spielberg, debauched images of nazi and fascist eroticism, symbols of violence and immorality, often bear an uncanny resemblance to the images and symbols once used by the fascists themselves to demarcate racial, sexual, and political others. This book exposes the "madness" inherent in such a course, which attests to the impossibility of disengaging visual and rhetorical constructions from political, ideological, and moral codes. Kriss Ravetto argues that contemporary discourses using such devices actually continue unacknowledged rhetorical, moral, and visual analogies of the past. Against postwar fictional and historical accounts of World War II in which generic images of evil characterize the nazi and the fascist, Ravetto sets the more complex approach of such filmmakers as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Liliana Cavani, and Lina Wertmuller. Her book asks us to think deeply about what it means to say that we have conquered fascism, when the aesthetics of fascism still describe and determine how we look at political figures and global events. Book excerpt: In November 1810, a thirty-year-old Englishman named William John Burchell landed in Cape Town after several years as a naturalist on St Helena island. The following year he embarked on an epic journey through the Cape Colony, lasting four years and covering 7000 kilometres, mainly through unexplored terrain. During this time he collected over 50 000 plant and animal specimens and built up a vast collection of sketches and paintings. He went on to travel in Brazil, and after many years back in Britain, he took his own life at the age of eighty-two. Burchell’s Travels recreates the life and journeysof a remarkable explorer, naturalist, botanist, writer, artist, cartographer, ethnographer and linguist, who is best known for his two-volume Travels in the Interior of Southern Africa, his extraordinary map of the country, and for the many species of animals, birds and plants that are named after him. Drawing from the rich source of Burchell’s writings, and beautifully illustrated with over 100 of his sketches and paintings, this book is a fascinating account of travel 200 years ago, and a celebration of the life, art and vision of an extraordinary man.

Book excerpt: First published in 1991. At once poet, dramatist, adaptor and translator, the operatic librettist in turn expresses and mocks social convention. Deirdre O'Grady's study of the Italian operatic librettist identifies opera as a mirror of literary climates, popular taste and political aspirations. The Last Troubadours traces the history of the Italian libretto from its courtly origin in the 16th century, through the crisis of the aristocracy and the 19th-century struggle for national unity, to the birth of social realism. Fundamental elements of Italian opera - heroic valour, cunning servants, revolutionary ardour and romantic tenderness - are considered in their historical and cultural context. Also discussed are famous lyrical and musical collaborations - of Da Ponte and Mozart, Solera and Verdi, Romani and Bellini, and Boito and Verdi.
