Book Murders and Acquisitions

Download or read book Murders and Acquisitions written by Alzena MacDonald and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'serial killer' has become increasingly prevalent in popular culture since the term was coined by Robert Ressler at the FBI in the mid-1970s. Murders and Acqusitions explores the social and political implications of this cultural figure. The collection argues that the often blood-chilling representations of the serial killer and serial killing offered in TV series, films, novels and fan productions function to address contemporary concerns and preoccupations. Focusing on well-known popular culture texts, such as The Wire, Kiss the Girls, Monster, the Saw series, American Psycho, The Strangers, CSI and Dexter, this electic anthology engages with a broad spectrum of cultural theory and performs critical textual analysis to examine the sophisticated ways the serial killer is deployed to mediate and/or work through cultural anxieties and fears.

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Animal Cruelty written by Linda Merz-Perez and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2003 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practitioners in the animal welfare field, law enforcement circles, and social services arena have often maintained that childhood cruelty to animals is a forerunner to violence against people. Does this behavior serve as a red flag with respect to extremely violent offenders, such as serial killers? Is it part of the cycle of violence associated with domestic abuse? Perez and Heide provide the first scientific examination of this relationship and examine issues of cruelty across different types of animals (pet, wild, stray, farm). The authors evaluate both qualitative and quantitative data to identify correlations between childhood cruelty and adult violent behavior, utilizing interviews and criminal records of violent and nonviolent inmates in a maximum security prison. Their findings will be of importance to a diverse audience, including researchers and practitioners in the field of juvenile justice, violence and domestic abuse, social welfare, animal welfare and animal rights and developmental psychologists and counselors, as well as law enforcement officers, district attorneys and judges, county and municipal officials, animal control officers, veterinarians, and school administrators, especially those concerned with intervention and prevention strategies.

Book The Politics of Massachusetts Exceptionalism

Download or read book The Politics of Massachusetts Exceptionalism written by Jerold Duquette and published by UMass + ORM. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thorough, engaging, and full of insight . . . a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the state’s governmental process and its political actors.” —Jeffrey M. Berry, author of Lobbying for the People: The Political Behavior of Public Interest Groups Are claims of Massachusetts’s special and instructive place in American history and politics justified? Alternately described as a “city upon a hill” and “an organized system of hatreds,” Massachusetts politics has indisputably exerted an outsized pull on the national stage. The Commonwealth’s leaders often argue for the state’s distinct position within the union, citing its proud abolitionist history and its status as a policy leader on health care, gay marriage, and transgender rights, not to mention its fertile soil for budding national politicians. Detractors point to the state’s busing crisis, sky-high levels of economic inequality, and mixed support for undocumented immigrants. The Politics of Massachusetts Exceptionalism tackles these tensions, offering a collection of essays from public policy experts that address the state’s noteworthy contributions to the nation’s political history. This is a much-needed volume for Massachusetts policymakers, journalists, and community leaders, as well as those learning about political power at the state level, inside and outside of the classroom. Contributors include the editors as well as Maurice T. Cunningham, Lawrence Friedman, Shannon Jenkins, Luis F. Jiménez, and Peter Ubertaccio. “One-stop shopping for an understanding of Massachusetts politics.” —CommonWealth Magazine

Book Early Kentucky Householders 1787 1811

Download or read book Early Kentucky Householders 1787 1811 written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a consolidated list of approximately 34,000 names that appeared in the annual tax lists for Lincoln County, Kentucky, between 1787 and 1811. Forty-six of the fifty-four Kentucky counties that existed in the year 1811 are mentioned in the descriptions of landholdings claimed by Lincoln County householders during this period; in fact, nearly half of the counties were created out of the original Lincoln County boundaries. Thus a Lincoln County tax list can essentially be viewed as a statewide tax list. This is an important consideration because a tax list of this magnitude can actually stand as a substitute for the missing 1790 and 1800 Kentucky censuses. Mr. Sutherland's "householders" are heads of household who do not necessarily own the land on which they and their families lived. Taxpayers (i.e., householders) recorded in the annual tax lists between 1787 and 1811 are listed here in alphabetical order along with the date of the tax list, the number of the tax book and the page number of the original entry, and an enumeration of all other persons living in the household. As an aid to research the compiler has drawn up a complete "Surname Directory," which groups the phonetic variations of each name under a common spelling so that the researcher has only to search for the "common" spelling rather than the variants. This is a superb research tool
