Days before Lucas' birthday party, he has a follow-up CT scan that reveals his cancer is back- he relapsed. Lucas is rushed to the hospital and begins chemotherapy the following evening. Days and weeks pass with Lucas receiving harsh chemotherapy and going through surgery before he finally feels well enough to celebrate his birthday. Despite being in the hospital, he is able to use a fun space outside of his hospital room for all of his friends and family to celebrate with him, getting him as close as possible to the birthday party he had imagined. This celebration gives him the motivation he needs to keep fighting. This book identifies the various feelings that Lucas experiences prior to his CT scan (the "scanxiety"), once he's informed that he relapses, and as he goes through treatment again as a way of providing children in this position with a peer that they can relate to.

Book excerpt: The Movie Brats is about power in the American film industry - how the legendary moguls lost it, and how a new young generation of filmmakers came to inherit it. The authors submit that social changes in America - and not just the advent of television - were the true cause of Hollywood's decline and tell how the movie brats - the first film school graduates and movie buffs to gain real power in the industry - took over the demoralized Hollywood of the 1960s and 1970s. Six top directors show how they succeeded and how the deals were made: Francis Coppola, George Lucas, Brian DePalma, John Milius, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg.

Book excerpt: Some guests were not invited….. The authors of Santa Monica once again illuminate the dark truths of life in sunny California in this twisty and atmospheric psychological thriller about a 50th birthday celebration on a remote mountainside in Topanga Canyon, where things go terrifyingly wrong. For Los Angeleno Dani Sanders, turning 50 seems like one more disappointment. Her career has stalled, her nineteen-year-old daughter with developmental issues is regressing, and Dani’s ex-husband Craig, a fertility doctor worshipped by Hollywood’s elite, is forever upending her life. Though she doesn’t feel much like celebrating, she can’t say no when her best friend Mia Markle, a flamboyant and strong-willed actress, insists on planning a “creative” birthday weekend in the wild, wealthy bohemian enclave of Topanga Canyon. On the weekend of the Summer Solstice, Dani and her six closest friends gather in the hills above the canyon at “Celestial Ranch,” 18-acres of rugged, wooded mountainside where they’ll spend three glorious days hiking, practicing meditation and reiki, and enjoying lavish catered cuisine. They will also indulge in a little DMT, a short-acting psychedelic drug meant to open their senses and transport them to a higher plain. But as the weekend unfolds, long-buried tensions, unresolved grievances, and old secrets emerge, leaving Dani desperate for clarity about her life. Dani and her friends take the drug late at night on an open hillside beneath the glittering stars. When Dani returns from her intense and revelatory "trip," she learns that one of her friends has gone missing. Then another disappears. And soon, Dani finds herself alone on the dark mountainside, seemingly abandoned by the people who are supposed to love her most. Or have they somehow been taken from her? What could Dani have possibly done to deserve a devastating birthday night like this—and how will she make it to the morning alone?

Download or read book The Lucas Effect George Lucas and the New Hollywood written by Patti J. McCarthy and published by Teneo Press. This book was released on 2014-10-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A filmmaker, visionary, and entrepreneur, George Lucas has not only changed the way we experience film and filmmaking, but also revolutionized film industry practices and standards. George Lucas, on an economic, aesthetic, and cultural level, has contributed more than any other individual to the shaping of the New Hollywood and is one of the most important figures in film history. His contribution to the film industry and our culture can be defined as the "Lucas Effect." Until now Lucas' work has been studied categorically. That is, popular books have been written that focus specifically on his life, his marketing skills, his films, his fans, or his various business accomplishments and practices. This is the first book to weave these threads together into a cohesive, rigorous study that illustrates the far reaching impact and importance of his creative genius. This book is important not only for film academics, students of film criticism and theory, popular culture scholars, and film devotees, but also for industry power brokers, Lucas fans and anyone who is interested in the work, life, and legacy of one of film's most important visionaries, George Lucas.

Download or read book Cyberphobia written by Edward Lucas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cybercrime is increasingly in the news on both an individual and national level--from the stolen identities and personal information of millions of Americans to the infiltration of our national security networks allowing access to both economic and trade secrets. In Cyberphobia, Edward Lucas unpacks this shadowy but metastasizing problem confronting our security. The uncomfortable truth is that we do not take cybersecurity seriously enough. When it comes to the internet, it might as well be the Wild West. Standards of securing our computers and other internet-connected technology are diverse, but just like the rules of the road meant to protect both individual drivers and everyone else driving alongside them, weak cybersecurity on the computers and internet systems near us put everyone at risk. Lucas sounds a necessary alarm on behalf of cybersecurity and prescribes immediate and bold solutions to this grave threat.
Download or read book Seeing Home The Ed Lucas Story written by Ed Lucas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be a major motion picture, Seeing Home: The Ed Lucas Story is the incredible true tale of a beloved Emmy-winning blind broadcaster who refused to let his disability prevent him from overcoming many challenging obstacles and achieving his dreams. In 1951, when he was only twelve years old, Ed Lucas was hit between the eyes by a baseball during a sandlot game in Jersey City. He lost his sight forever. To cheer him up, his mother wrote letters to baseball superstars of the day, explaining her son’s condition. Soon Ed was invited into their clubhouses and dugouts, as the players and coaches personally made him feel at home. Despite the warm reception he got from his heroes, Ed was told repeatedly by others that he would never be able to accomplish anything worthwhile because of his limitations. But Hall-of-Famer Phil Rizzuto became Ed’s mentor and encouraged him to pursue his passion—broadcasting. Ed then overcame hundreds of barriers, big and small, to become a pioneer—the first blind person covering baseball on a regular basis, a career he has successfully continued for six decades. Ed may have lost his sight, but he never lost his faith, which got him through many pitfalls and dark days. When Ed’s two sons were very young, his wife walked out and left him to raise them all by himself, which he did. Six years later, Ed’s ex-wife returned and sued him for full custody, saying that a blind man shouldn’t have her kids. The judge agreed, tearing Ed's sons away from their father's loving home. Ed fought the heartbreaking decision with appeals all the way up to the highest level of the court system. Eventually, he prevailed, marking the very first time in US history that a disabled person was awarded custody over a non-disabled spouse. Even in his later years, Ed is still enjoying a remarkably blessed life. In 2006, he married his second wife, Allison, at home plate in old Yankee Stadium, the only time that such a thing ever happened on that iconic spot. Yankee owner George Steinbrenner himself catered the whole affair, which was shown live on national television. Seeing Home: The Ed Lucas Story is truly a magical read and a universally uplifting and inspirational tale for everyone, whether or not you happen to be a sports fan. Over his long and amazing life, Ed has collected hundreds of anecdotes from his personal relationships and encounters with everyone, from kings and presidents to movie stars and sports Hall-of-Famers, many of which he shares in this memoir, using his trademark humorous and engaging style, cowritten with his youngest son, Christopher.
