Book excerpt: Beginning with 'Gilles de Binche' (Antwerp, 2005) and concluding with 'Against the Day' (Brussels, Moscow and Malmo, 2009-10), acclaimed painter Luc Tuymans produced a landmark suite of seven thematically linked bodies of work. Their meta-narrative, which traces the philosophical and psychic roots of contemporary civilization, weaves together a range of photographic source images, from St Peter's to Disneyland to Big Brother, that together tell the banal and terrifying story of our times. Luc Tuymans: Is It Safe? features this source imagery alongside more than 100 of the artist's newest paintings, many never before published. Accompanying each body of work is an introductory text written by the artist, while the essay 'Tuymans, Loyola, Leibniz', specially commissioned by Mexican artist Pablo Sigg, provides historical and philosophical context. 'Proper', an essay by Belgian art historian Gerrit Vermeiren, looks at one body of work in detail, tracing the themes and sources of each painting and capturing the cultural atmosphere of the moment in which they were produced. And an extensive interview between Tuymans and his assistant Tommy Simoens offers additional insight into the artist's thinking and motivations. Celebrated as one of the world's most gifted and visionary painters, Tuymans has been creating iconic works of contemporary painting for nearly three decades. With their enigmatic compositions and modulated colours, these works are moving and unmistakable, and their power continues to win new converts to Tuymans's chilling vision of history painting.

Book excerpt: On May 17, 2010, the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) in Antwerp unveiled a 40-square-meter stone mosaic by the renowned Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (born 1958). The mosaic was based on Tuymans' 2002 painting "Dead Skull," now owned by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This painting was in turn based on a seventeenth-century plaque at the foot of Antwerp Cathedral's north tower, commemorating Quentin Metsys (1466-1530), founder of the Antwerp school of painting. On the occasion of the inauguration of Tuymans' mosaic, and under the close supervision of the artist, Graphic Matter in Belgium has published this boxed Dead Skull edition. It contains a screenprint on Somerset Velvet 250-gram paper and a hardback book--available only within this edition--with an introductory essay by Kate Mayne. The edition is limited to 60 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. Please note that this item is not warehoused in the United States and will ship directly from Europe. The shipping cost is U.S. $270.00 (regardless of location in North America).

Download or read book Luc Tuymans written by Luc Tuymans and published by San Francisco Museum. This book was released on 2009 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luc Tuymans is one of todays most widely admired painters, an heir to the great tradition of Northern European painting and an enduring influence on younger and emerging artists. As a European child of the 1950s, his relationship to painting is inevitably structured by television, cinema and by the lingering effects ofWorldWar II; more recent historical preoccupations have included the dramatic turn of world events post-9/11. Tuymans combines a muted palette with deteriorated surface effect and a singular use of cropping, close-up and sequencing perfect devices with which to undertake his investigation of the pathological, the banal and the conspiratorial. Published in conjunction with the artists first full-scale American survey, this is without question the authoritative publication on Tuymans. It features approximately 80 key works from 1985 to the present, and is accompanied by essays analysing the painters main concerns, with particular attention paid to his working process and his adaptation of source materials. Exhibition co-curator Madeleine Grynsztejn shows that although Tuymans remains loyal to painting as a medium, his tendency to work in suites, and at an increasing scale, also relates his work to current installation and site-specific art. Co-curator Helen Molesworth examines themes of sinister banality, Joseph Leo Koerner writes on iconophobia and iconophilia, Ian Buruma addresses political aspects of Tuymanss work and his relationship to photography, and Bill Horrigan examines cinematic sources. This book is not only the most comprehensive survey of Tuymans's career to date, but also the most thorough chronology of his artistic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s, Belgian painter Luc Tuymans continues to expand our understanding of the medium. Sourcing imagery from books, magazines, films, the internet, and increasingly his own iPhone photos, Tuymans’s unique selection of subject matter reveals his fascination with moral complexities. Exploring diverse and sensitive topics, many of which include historic references from World War II to more contemporary events such as 9/11, Tuymans presents imagery that at first seems innocuous or approachable but upon deeper inspection can be entirely unsettling. Achieved through his masterful handling of paint, his works are often suggestive of memories or familiar people, places, and things. The latest in the Spotlight Series, which focuses on new bodies of work by contemporary artists, Tuymans continues to take on increasingly complex subject matters in his primarily muted palette. Published on the occasion of the artist’s 2020 solo exhibition at David Zwirner Hong Kong, this book features an essay by art critic Su Wei, who approaches Tuymans’s newest paintings and how they expand his oeuvre.

Book excerpt: Spanning some thirty years, Luc Tuymans' exhibition, "Intolerance," speaks to certain abiding preoccupations the Belgian painter has long mined in counterpoint with a rapidly changing world. Well aware from the outset of his career that painting as an art-form was widely considered in crisis and that the role and ubiquity of the image in contemporary culture was radically shifting as a consequence of proliferating technological developments, Tuymans adopted a contestatory position. In a contrarian move, painting became for him a vehicle through which the most urgent and volatile issues, whether relating to history, identity, nationalism and belief, or to head-line social and political events could be eloquently probed. Organized around key thematics in Tuymans' stringent practice, this ambitious retrospective will cast new light on his singular trajectory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in a catalogue raisonné of Tuymans's paintings surveys nearly 200 works from the vital early years of his career Credited with a key role in the revival of painting in the 1990s, Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) continues to produce subtle, and at times unsettling, works that engage with history, technology, and everyday life. This first volume in a catalogue raisonné of Tuymans's paintings surveys nearly 200 works that were vital to his artistic development. The years 1972 to 1994 witnessed the maturation of his signature method of painting from preexisting imagery--such as magazine images, Polaroids, and television footage--as well as his first solo exhibition. Also dating from this period are many of his seminal canvases, along with ten poignant portraits of the ailing human body and the enigmatic series Superstition that comprised his first works exhibited in the United States. The catalogue features brilliant new photography of each of the paintings and an illustrated chronology with archival images and installation shots of the works in this volume. This publication is a testament to Tuymans's persistent assertion of the relevance and importance of painting--a conviction that he maintains even in today's digital world, when his work continues to be a touchstone for artists and scholars.

Book Luc Tuymans Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Volume 3 2007 2018

Download or read book Luc Tuymans Catalogue Raisonn of Paintings Volume 3 2007 2018 written by Eva Meyer-Hermann and published by David Zwirner Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of a catalogue raisonné of Luc Tuymans’s paintings, surveying nearly two hundred works, charts the artist’s investigation into painting’s relationship to history and technology. Tuymans is widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s. His sparsely colored, figurative works speak in a quiet, restrained, and at times unsettling voice and are typically painted from preexisting imagery that includes photographs and video stills. The works in this volume, made between 2007 to 2018, show Tuymans at his most virtuosic, subtly but provocatively addressing a range of topics including religion, corporatization, and cultural memory, in addition to modernism and the history of painting. The Internet, in particular, is central to these works as well as the screen—leading to a new style of contemporary image. The works are mediatized to the nth degree, despite the artist’s continuous use of the traditional medium of painting. There is a certain kind of light that comes out of a screen, which can be found in Tuymans’s recent paintings. This volume includes an editor’s note by Eva Meyer-Hermann and an illustrated chronology with archival images and installation views of the featured works. It also presents brilliant color reproductions of each painting from this period. This publication is a testament to Tuymans’s persistent assertion of the relevance and importance of painting—a conviction that he maintains even in today’s digital world, when his work continues to be a touchstone for artists and scholars.

Book excerpt: Luc Tuymans is a painter engaged with "figuration", using imagery that he reworks in a critical or self-critical way. He combines images from various sources - photographs, film stills, mirror images - with a spare palette, unexpected cropping, obscured spaces and blurring to reinforce the painted image's status as a replica. Perhaps more than any other genre, portraiture allows Tuymans to explore the balance between revealing and concealing. Portraits: Luc Tuymans presents about 30 paintings from bodies of work ranging over the artist's entire career. Most seem conventional portraits - Himmler, 1997/98, A Flemish Intellectual, 1995 - but others, such as Bloodstains, 1993, and Fingers, 1995, exhibit the artist's elliptical approach to re-presentation. 0Exhibition: The Menil Collection, Houston, USA (27.09.-05.01.2014). 0.

This book presents the major works of the artist together with commentary and supplemental materials, plus interviews with Helen Molesworth and Madeleine Grynsztejn, Brice Marden, Peter Schjeldahl and Robert Storr.

Book excerpt: This book, published in conjunction with an exhibition at Edinburgh’s Talbot Rice Gallery, features the Belgian artist’s most recent work. Here, his fascination with Scottish light and its thinkers, who believed in the perfectibility of man, becomes apparent. Inspired by a visit to the art collection of the University of Edinburgh, Tuymans realised three small portraits of Scottish philosophers. Besides the theme of light, the notion of impending horror also plays a role in a monumental dark work, ‘The Shore’, which refers to Goya, and in the portrait of Issei Sagawa, a cannibalistic murderer. Includes a short story by British author Will Self and an essay by art historian Collin Chinnery. 00Exhibition: Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh, UK (31.10-19.12.2015)

Book excerpt: Providing a crucial record of the painter Noah Davis’s extraordinary oeuvre, this monograph tells the story of a brilliant artist and cultural force through the eyes of his friends and collaborators. Despite his exceedingly premature death at the age of 32, Davis’s paintings have deeply influenced the rise of figurative and representational painting in the twenty-first century. Davis’s emotionally charged work places him firmly in the canon of great American painting. Stirring, elusive, and attuned to the history of painting, his compositions infuse scenes from everyday life with a magical realist atmosphere and contain traces of his abiding interest in artists such as Marlene Dumas, Kerry James Marshall, Fairfield Porter, and Luc Tuymans. This catalogue is born of the unique relationship between Davis and Helen Molesworth, whom Davis entrusted to be the curator of his work. It is published on the occasion of the 2020 exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, which travels to The Underground Museum in Los Angeles, a space that Davis founded with his wife, artist Karon Davis. In her introduction, catalogue essay, and interviews with important figures in Davis’s life, Molesworth shows how the artist’s generosity and sense of responsibility galvanized a uniquely supportive artistic community, culture, and vision. Together with color illustrations and archival photographs, the book features heartfelt testimonials that unfold in the intimate yet expansive spirit of studio visits with people close to him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2000, The Brooklyn Rail has been a platform for artists, academics, critics, poets, and writers in New York and abroad. The monthly journal’s continued appeal is due in large part to its diverse contributors, many of whom bring contrasting and often unexpected opinions to conversations about art and aesthetics. No other publication devotes as much space to the artist’s voice, allowing ideas to unfold and idiosyncrasies to emerge through open discussion. Since its inception, cofounder and artistic director Phong Bui and the Rail’s contributors have interviewed over four hundred artists for The Brooklyn Rail. This volume brings together for the first time a selection of sixty of the most influential and seminal interviews with artists ranging from Richard Serra and Brice Marden, to Alex Da Corte and House of Ladosha. While each interview is important in its own right, offering a perspective on the life and work of a specific artist, collectively they tell the story of a journal that has grown during one of the more diverse and surprising periods in visual art. There is no unified style or perspective; The Brooklyn Rail’s strength lies in its ability to include and champion difference. Selected and coedited by Jarrett Earnest, a frequent Rail contributor, with Lucas Zwirner, the book includes an introduction to the project by Phong Bui as well as many of the hand-drawn portraits he has made of those he has interviewed over the years. This combination of verbal and visual profiles offers a rare and personal insight into contemporary visual culture. Book excerpt: At the age of nineteen, a young Luc Tuymans saw for the very first time the work of El Greco on a visit to the Szépmvészeti Múzeum in Budapest, an event that sparked his imagination and prompted him to embark on a journey that would lead him to be one of today's most influential artists. Almost forty years later, that life-changing experience is recounted and celebrated in The Image Revisited: Luc Tuymans in conversation with... , a book that acts both as a monograph and a history of art book. Timed to coincide with an exhibition organized by Tuymans at MuHKA, Antwerp, in June 2018, this richly illustrated book includes three conversations Tuymans had with art historians Hans Maria De Wolf, Gottfried Böhm and T.J. Clark in museums in Basel, Brussels and Budapest over the course of three years. What emerges, along with a fascinating discussion on the work of artists such as El Greco, Cézanne, Goya, de la Tour, Titian, Courbet, Mantegna, Hopper, Newman and Richter amongst others, is an insight into Tuymans' own creative process, and how the great art of the past inspired and motivated him.

Book excerpt: The theatrical, the satirical and the macabre come together in arresting fashion in the art of James Ensor. He was very successful in his lifetime and exerted considerable influence on the development of Expressionism. An innovator and an outsider, he rebelled against the conservative art teachings of the late 19th century academy in Brussels, drawn instead to the avant-garde salons where his radical creative vision could thrive. The imagery of masks and carnivals runs through much of his work, from vibrant colours and flamboyant costumes to an ever-present sense of drama and satire. Curated by Luc Tuymans, this exhibition will present a truly original body of work, seen through the eyes of one of today's leading painters. Tuymans will look back at Ensor's singular career through a selection of his most bizarrely brilliant and gloriously surreal creations. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, Great Britain (29.10.2016 - 29.01.2017).
