Book excerpt: In everything from philosophical ethics to legal argument to public activism, it has become commonplace to appeal to the idea of human dignity. In such contexts, the concept of dignity typically signifies something like the fundamental moral status belonging to all humans. Remarkably, however, it is only in the last century that this meaning of the term has become standardized. Before this, dignity was instead a concept associated with social status. Unfortunately, this transformation remains something of a mystery in existing scholarship. Exactly when and why did "dignity" change its meaning? And before this change, was it truly the case that we lacked a conception of human worth akin to the one that "dignity" now represents? In this volume, leading scholars across a range of disciplines attempt to answer such questions by clarifying the presently murky history of "dignity," from classical Greek thought through the Middle Ages and Enlightenment to the present day.

Book Women Moralists in Early Modern France

Download or read book Women Moralists in Early Modern France written by Julie Candler Hayes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julie Candler Hayes explores the contributions of seventeenth and eighteenth-century French women philosophers and intellectuals to moralist writing, a genre focusing on dispassionate observations on the human condition and traditionally viewed through its best-known male writers. This study, the first of its kind, includes both famous thinkers--such as Émilie Du Châtelet and Germaine de Staël--and nearly two dozen of their contemporaries. Hayes demonstrates how, through their critique of institutions and practices, their valorization of introspection and self-expression, and their engagement with philosophical issues, women moralists carved out an important space for the public exercise of their reason.

Book Nietzsche s Philosophical Context

Download or read book Nietzsche s Philosophical Context written by Thomas H Brobjer and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche was immensely influential and, counter to most expectations, also very well read. An essential new reference tool for those interested in his thinking, Nietzsche’s Philosophical Context identifies the chronology and huge range of philosophical books that engaged him. Rigorously examining the scope of this reading, Thomas H. Brobjer consulted over two thousand volumes in Nietzsche’s personal library, as well as his book bills, library records, journals, letters, and publications. This meticulous investigation also considers many of the annotations in his books. In arguing that Nietzsche’s reading often constituted the starting point for, or counterpoint to, much of his own thinking and writing, Brobjer’s study provides scholars with fresh insight into how Nietzsche worked and thought; to which questions and thinkers he responded; and by which of them he was influenced. The result is a new and much more contextual understanding of Nietzsche's life and thinking.

Book The Quest of Glory

  • Publisher : DigiCat
  • Release : 2022-06-03
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book The Quest of Glory written by Marjorie Bowen and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Quest of Glory" by Marjorie Bowen is a magnificent romance novel that is unlike any other story about the French courts. It makes the reader feel pity for its befuddled young majesty hero, the Marquis de Vauvenargues, who is also a soldier, courtier, and philosopher. Excerpt: "The Austrian guns had ceased with the early sunset, and the desolate city of Prague was silent, encompassed by the enemy and the hard, continuous cold of a Bohemian December: in the hall of Vladislav in the Hradcany, that ancient palace of ancient kings that rose above the town, several French officers wrapped in heavy cloaks were walking up and down, as they had done night after night since the dragging siege began."

Book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy

Download or read book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy written by Silvana Greco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology.
