Book Molybdenum Disulphide Lubrication

Download or read book Molybdenum Disulphide Lubrication written by A.R. Lansdown and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-05-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s and the early 1980s there was an enormous volume of research and development into the subject of molybdenum disulphide lubrication, much of which was supported by national governments for the benefit of defence, aviation or space activities. There were already some well-established practical guidelines for deciding when and how to use molybdenum disulphide, but there was still a considerable lack of universally-accepted theoretical understanding of some of the important and fundamental aspects of molybdenum disulphide technology. However, the state of knowledge was growing rapidly. In the past fifteen years the situation with regard to the technology of molybdenum disulphide lubrication has stabilised in many respects, and a measure of consensus has been reached about some of the mechanisms involved. The use of molybdenum disulphide has become routine in some industries, and there are many well-established and reputable commercial products available. Except in the high-technology field of physical deposition techniques, especially sputtering, the output of new research publications has fallen from perhaps two hundred a year in the 1970s to fewer than ten a year in the 1990s. In spite of this maturing of the subject, it is clear that there are still many aspects in which disagreements persist about the mechanisms involved, and which as a result are unclear or misunderstood among current, and perhaps even more importantly, potential users. One of the primary objectives of this book is to analyse the various aspects of molybdenum disulphide lubrication technology about which there are still disagreements or controversy, and to attempt to come to firm conclusions about some of the mechanisms involved. In particular, it will place emphasis on the importance and effects of burnishing and film consolidation.

Book The Effects of Chemistry and Crystal Structure on the Lubrication Properties of Sputtered MoS2 Films

Download or read book The Effects of Chemistry and Crystal Structure on the Lubrication Properties of Sputtered MoS2 Films written by Paul D. Fleischauer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lubricating films of MoS2 have been prepared by sputter deposition onto steel substrates maintained at different temperatures. The surface chemical compositions and bulk structural properties of the films, before and after rubbing for various times in dry nitrogen gas, were determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by x-ray diffraction, respectively. Film thicknesses, densities, and morphologies were also measured. Differences in these properties for the films prepared under different conditions provide insight into the mechanisms of film lubrication and failure. It is proposed that lubrication by MoS2 films occurs through intercrystalline slip and that there is an optimal crystalline size that provides maximum wear life under particular application conditions. Methods are suggested for improving film performance, based on particle/crystalline size and lattice spacing arguments and on the electronic properties of MoS2 and related compounds. Keywords: Solid lubricant, Molybdenum sulfate, Crystal structure. (jes).

Book Coatings Tribology

    Book Details:
  • Author : K. Holmberg
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1994-07-15
  • ISBN : 0080875920
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Coatings Tribology written by K. Holmberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-07-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a general view on thin surface coatings used for tribological applications and it is based on the current state of understanding. The mechanisms of friction and wear in sliding and rolling contacts of coated surfaces are described. Basic information on coating techniques, tribology and surface mechanisms is given. Based on collected experimental works information is given on the properties of thin soft coatings, such as polymer, lamellar solid and soft metal coatings; thin hard coatings, such as nitride, carbide, oxide, boride and diamond and diamond-like coatings; and multi-component and multi-layer coatings. The influence of interface layers and lubricants is highlighted. The methods available for characterization of coated surfaces and for mechanical and chemical evaluation of their tribological properties are described. Tribological evaluation methods for accelerated and field testing and the need for standardization of quality assurance procedures are discussed. A methodology for the selection of thin coatings for tribological applications is presented and knowledge based expert system approaches for coating selection are reviewed. For different application examples, the basic tribological contact mechanisms are described and the possibilities for improving their tribological properties by using surface coatings are discussed. The application examples include sliding and rolling bearings, gears, tools for cutting and forming, erosion resistant applications, magnetic recording systems and bio-medical implants.
