As the three sisters have “memories of sweet youth,” the next generation finds the spotlight: Luba’s adult daughter Doralís emcees the proceedings in her role as mischievous host of a children’s TV show, while Petra’s little girl, Venus, has adventures with her aunt Fritz and her best friend Yoshio. At her mother’s urging, Venus also writes missives to her fierce, one-armed cousin Casimira, who’s back in Palomar. In these stories ― never before collected together ― Venus tells it like it is!

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Luba written by Gilbert Hernandez and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Gilbert Hernandez Luba: Three Daughters is the final book in Gilbert Hernandez's post-Palomar trilogy, continuing the story of matriarch Luba and her extended family's travails in the United States after her Central American hometown is destroyed at the end of Palomar. It focuses on Luba and her two sisters, Fritz and Petra, exploring the complex relationships that form between family and how the experiences and actions of one generation influence the next. Renowned for his female characters, Hernandez intersperses his main narrative with "The Kid Stuff Kids," a series of lighthearted and playful one-pagers starring the young children of the three sisters, richly juxtaposed against the complex family drama at work in Three Daughters. Hernandez's mix of Latino soap opera, magic realist touches and rich naturalism speak to audiences about the changes that come with age and experience, and they are unparalleled in comics.

Book Maria M Book 1

Download or read book Maria M Book 1 written by Gilbert Hernandez and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book of two, Gilbert Hernandez cartoons a meta “movie adaptation” of his Poison River storyline (complete with drug lords, “shady guardian angels,” torrid affairs and more) starring Fritz as her mother. A woman comes to the U.S. from Latin America to escape her shady past, only to fall into a new shady life. After a go at the adult entertainment business, Maria marries a drug lord and her dangerous past is nothing compared to her new life in America. The drug lord’s son, Gorgo, secretly falls in love with her and he watches over her like a guardian angel. Danger and corruption (and of course sex) drive the first half of this love story. Long-time Love and Rockets readers will find the storyline familiar... and that’s because, in an Adaptation-style meta twist, Maria M. is actually the B-movie film adaptation of the life story of Luba’s mother Maria, as previously seen in its “real” version in the classic graphic novel Poison River (available in the Beyond Palomarcollection) ― starring Maria’s own daughter playing her own mother. Confused? Don’t be! Maria M. will work perfectly on its own terms as the kind of violent, sexy pulp tale that Gilbert Hernandez has proven so adept at these past several years, and the “source material” for the story will just provide an extra layer of delight for the cognoscenti.

Book excerpt: Gilbert & Jaime Hernandez's 'Love & Rockets' virtually defined alternative comics in the 80s. Now, more popular than ever thanks to the re-launch of his seminal comic book series earlier this year, Gilbert releases his first graphic novel since the re-launch, which spotlights the artist's most beloved character in a year when her creator is appearing on the pages of Time, Vibe and the L.A. Times. This collection is an awesome blend of political intrigue, sexuality and Gilbert's characteristically human portrayal of his characters. Illustrated in b/w throughout.

Luba and her cousin Ofelia’s relationship has always been fraught, but when Ofelia threatens to write a book about Luba, past memories, secrets, resentments, and pain resurface. Meanwhile, Luba’s children―genius Socorro, recently out-and-proud Doralis, and prickly Maricela―show that a talent for trouble may be hereditary. Luba’s sisters, Fritz and Petra, swap lovers (as usual), but . . . are Fritz and family friend Pipo sittin’ in a tree? These vividly drawn characters are charged with Hernandez’s trademark complexity; they live, love, age, fight― and die―in this sweeping, multi-generational saga.

Book Alternative Comics

Download or read book Alternative Comics written by Charles Hatfield and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s, a sea change occurred in comics. Fueled by Art Spiegel- man and Franoise Mouly's avant-garde anthology Raw and the launch of the Love Rockets series by Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez, the decade saw a deluge of comics that were more autobiographical, emotionally realistic, and experimental than anything seen before. These alternative comics were not the scatological satires of the 1960s underground, nor were they brightly colored newspaper strips or superhero comic books. In Alternative Comics: An Emerging Literature, Charles Hatfield establishes the parameters of alternative comics by closely examining long-form comics, in particular the graphic novel. He argues that these are fundamentally a literary form and offers an extensive critical study of them both as a literary genre and as a cultural phenomenon. Combining sharp-eyed readings and illustrations from particular texts with a larger understanding of the comics as an art form, this book discusses the development of specific genres, such as autobiography and history. Alternative Comics analyzes such seminal works as Spiegelman's Maus, Gilbert Hernandez's Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories, and Justin Green's Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary.

Book The Love and Rockets Companion

Download or read book The Love and Rockets Companion written by Marc Sobel and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2013-08-03 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Love and Rockets Companion: 30 Years (and Counting) contains three incredibly in-depth and candid interviews with creators Gilbert, Jaime and Mario Hernandez: one conducted by writer Neil Gaiman (Coraline); one conducted some six years into the comic’s run by longtime L&R publisher Gary Groth; and one conducted by the book’s author, spanning Gilbert’s, Jaime’s and Mario’s careers, and looking to the future of the ongoing series, with a follow-up conversation with Groth. This book has foldout family trees for both Gilbert’s Palomar and Jaime’s Locas storylines; unpublished art; a character glossary (which is handy, considering that Gilbert alone has created 50+ characters!); highlights from the original series’ anarchic letters columns; timelines; and the most wide-ranging Hernandez Brothers bibliography ever compiled, including album and DVD covers, posters and more.
