Download or read book From the Preshower to the New Technologies for Supercolliders written by Bjrn H. Wiik and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2000, the city of Bologna was the European Capital for Culture. For this reason, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences, following the Gugliemo Marconi Centenary and the Luigi Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, decided to call attention to the major achievements of their most distinguished members, in science and technology. This invaluable volume presents a series of inventions and technological developments, some thought of and directly implemented by Professor Antonino Zichichi, others suggested and developed under his leadership, all of them having contributed to the discovery of new particles and new phenomena in the field of subnuclear physics. The book was conceived by an eminent scientist, Professor Dr Björn H. Wiik, Director of Germany's most prestigious physics laboratory, DESY (Hamburg). It would not be published were it not for Professor Dr Albrecht Wagner, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, and Dr Horst Wenninger from CERN (Geneva), the greatest European physics laboratory.

Download or read book Gas Turbine Diagnostics written by Ranjan Ganguli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely used for power generation, gas turbine engines are susceptible to faults due to the harsh working environment. Most engine problems are preceded by a sharp change in measurement deviations compared to a baseline engine, but the trend data of these deviations over time are contaminated with noise and non-Gaussian outliers. Gas Turbine Diagnostics: Signal Processing and Fault Isolation presents signal processing algorithms to improve fault diagnosis in gas turbine engines, particularly jet engines. The algorithms focus on removing noise and outliers while keeping the key signal features that may indicate a fault. The book brings together recent methods in data filtering, trend shift detection, and fault isolation, including several novel approaches proposed by the author. Each method is demonstrated through numerical simulations that can be easily performed by the reader. Coverage includes: Filters for gas turbines with slow data availability Hybrid filters for engines equipped with faster data monitoring systems Nonlinear myriad filters for cases where monitoring of transient data can lead to better fault detection Innovative nonlinear filters for data cleaning developed using optimization methods An edge detector based on gradient and Laplacian calculations A process of automating fault isolation using a bank of Kalman filters, fuzzy logic systems, neural networks, and genetic fuzzy systems when an engine model is available An example of vibration-based diagnostics for turbine blades to complement the performance-based methods Using simple examples, the book describes new research tools to more effectively isolate faults in gas turbine engines. These algorithms may also be useful for condition and health monitoring in other systems where sharp changes in measurement data indicate the onset of a fault.
Download or read book Double beta Decay And Related Topics Proceedings Of The International Workshop Held At European Centre For Theoretical Studies Ect written by Sabin Stoica and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-01-27 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings contain the lectures and contributions given at the workshop on double-beta decay and related topics, which was held at the ETC∗ (European Centre for Theoretical Studies), Trento, Italy, between April 24 and May 5, 1995.Double-beta decay is of prominent actuality nowadays. With the largely increased actuality of neutrino physics by recent observations and discussions of solar and atmospheric neutrino deficits, dark matter physics and neutrino oscillations and recent corresponding development in Grand Unified Theories, double-beta decay has attained a key position within these problems. The lectures of this Workshop treat the theoretical and experimental status, potential and perspectives of double-beta decay research and the intimate interrelations with the above mentioned and other topics from the view of particle, nuclear and astrophysics.
Download or read book Not Fit to Stay written by Sarah Isabel Wallace and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1900s, panic over the arrival of South Asian immigrants swept up and down the west coast of North America. While racism and fear of labour competition were at the heart of this furor, public leaders – including physicians, union leaders, civil servants, journalists, and politicians – latched on to unsubstantiated public health concerns to justify the exclusion of South Asians from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. Not Fit to Stay examines how and why South Asians were excluded from immigration through legislation that took effect in Canada and the United States in the early twentieth century. This book is an important study of how white North Americans saw first-wave South Asian immigrants as separate from, and inferior to, other groups in the evolving racial hierarchy on the west coast of North America.

Download or read book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking And New Physics At The Tev Scale written by Timothy L Barklow and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an expanded version of the report by the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Beyond the Standard Model Working Group which was contributed to Particle Physics — Perspectives and Opportunities, a report of the Division of Particles and Fields Committee for Long Term Planning. One of the Working Group's primary goals was to study the phenomenology of electroweak symmetry breaking and attempt to quantify the “physics reach” of present and future colliders. Their investigations encompassed the Standard Model — with one doublet of Higgs scalars — and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model. These include models of low-energy supersymmetry, dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and a variety of extensions of the Standard Model with new particles and interactions. The Working Group also considered signals of new physics in precision measurements arising from virtual processes and examined experimental issues associated with the study of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for new physics at present and future hadron and lepton colliders. This volume represents an important contribution to the efforts being made to advance the frontiers of particle physics.
