Download or read book Germans in America written by Walter D. Kamphoefner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh look at the Germans—the largest and perhaps the most diverse foreign-language group in 19th century America. Drawing upon the latest findings from both sides of the Atlantic, emphasizing history from the bottom up and drawing heavily upon examples from immigrant letters, this work presents a number of surprising new insights. Particular attention is given to the German-American institutional network, which because of the size and diversity of the immigrant group was especially strong. Not just parochial schools, but public elementary schools in dozens of cities offered instruction in the mother tongue. Only after 1900 was there a slow transition to the English language in most German churches. Still, the anti-German hysteria of World War I brought not so much a sudden end to cultural preservation as an acceleration of a decline that had already begun beforehand. It is from this point on that the largest American ethnic group also became the least visible, but especially in rural enclaves, traces of the German culture and language persisted to the end of the twentieth century.

Book German Propaganda and U S Neutrality in World War I

Download or read book German Propaganda and U S Neutrality in World War I written by Chad R. Fulwider and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fading evening light of August 4, 1914, Great Britain’s H.M.S. Telconia set off on a mission to sever the five transatlantic cables linking Germany and the United States. Thus Britain launched its first attack of World War I and simultaneously commenced what became the war’s most decisive battle: the battle for American public opinion. In this revealing study, Chad Fulwider analyzes the efforts undertaken by German organizations, including the German Foreign Ministry, to keep the United States out of the war. Utilizing archival records, newspapers, and “official” propaganda, the book also assesses the cultural impact of Germany’s political mission within the United States and comments upon the perception of American life in Europe during the early twentieth century.

Book The German American Encounter

Download or read book The German American Encounter written by Frank Trommler and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Germans, the largest immigration group in the United States, contributed to the shaping of American society and left their mark on many areas from religion and education to food, farming, political and intellectual life, Americans have been instrumental in shaping German democracy after World War II. Both sides can claim to be part of each other's history, and yet the question arises whether this claim indicates more than a historical interlude in the forming of the Atlantic civilization. In this volume some of the leading historians, social scientists and literary scholars from both sides of the Atlantic have come together to investigate, for the first time in a broad interdisciplinary collaboration, the nexus of these interactions in view of current and future challenges to German-American relations.

Download or read book Watchdog of Loyalty written by Carl Henry Chrislock and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: April 1917: The governor of Minnesota put the State Capitol in St. Paul under heavy military guard. Newspapers filled their columns with rumors of terrorist activities. Then the United States declared war on Germany. In the midst of patriotic hysteria, the state legislature passed a bill establishing the Minnesota Commission of Public Safety to "do ... all acts and things necessary" to defend the state from its enemies. In compelling narrative style, this book offers the first hard look at the motives and activities of this uniquely powerful state agency, which used loyalty as a weapon to protect the existing socio-economic order against a rising tide of radicalism on the home front.
