Book excerpt: Sometimes love means embracing the good, the bad . . . and even the impossible. Dear Reader, My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don’t need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old bachelor status anytime soon. But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, I’m going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong. Or maybe not. Because I’ve met a Grace Kelly look-alike who is annoying . . . until she isn’t. But she is impossible. As in, nothing can happen between us because she is a literal princess. Even though that’s easy to forget when we’re working together to restore a castle-like orphanage in a secluded mountain town and “forced proximity” includes a small closet, a secret one-hundred-year-old journal, and the tactile memory of an off-limits royal in my arms. Basically, the whole situation has turned into an ooey gooey magical snow globe of romantic tropes complete with cute kids and an actual ball. Now, even my sentences are starting to sound like mush. Ugh. Send high levels of testosterone my way—I’m going to need it. Loyally, Luke “Readers, you are in for a pure delight! Luke Edgewood is, in a word, dreamy.”—Emma St. Clair, USA TODAY bestselling author Witty, hilarious, and heartwarming contemporary romance A sweet, kisses-only romance Stand-alone novel Book length: approximately 107,000 words Includes discussion questions for book clubs
Download or read book The Love of David and Jonathan written by James E. Harding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were David and Jonathan 'gay' lovers? This very modern question lies behind the recent explosion of studies of the David and Jonathan narrative. Interpreters differ in their assessment of whether 1 and 2 Samuel offer a positive portrayal of a homosexual relationship. Beneath the conflict of interpretations lies an ambiguous biblical text which has drawn generations of readers - from the redactors of the Hebrew text and the early translators to modern biblical scholars - to the task of resolving its possible meanings. What has not yet been fully explored is the place of David and Jonathan in the evolution of modern, Western understandings of same-sex relationships, in particular how the story of their relationship was read alongside classical narratives, such as those of Achilles and Patroclus, or Orestes and Pylades. The Love of David and Jonathan explores this context in detail to argue that the story of David and Jonathan was part of the process by which the modern idea of homosexuality itself emerged.
Download or read book Contract Status and Fiduciary Law written by Paul B. Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contractual and fiduciary relationships are the two primary mechanisms through which the law facilitates coordinated pursuit of our personal interests. These fields are often represented in oppositional terms, and many accept the distinction that contract law allows an individual to pursue their interests independently, while fiduciary law allows an individual to pursue their interests in a dependent or interdependent way. Relying on this distinction, however, seems to suggest that the boundaries between the fields of contract and fiduciary law are fixed rather than fluid. Bringing together leading theorists to analyse critically important philosophical questions at the intersection of contract and fiduciary law, Contract, Status, and Fiduciary Law demonstrates that popular characterizations of the relationship between contract and fiduciary law are overly simplistic. By considering how contract and fiduciary law interact, and not just how they differ, the contributors to this volume offer new insights into a range of topics, including: status relationships, voluntary undertakings, duties of loyalty, equity, employment law, tort law, the law of remedies, political theory, and the theory of the firm.

Download or read book American Rage written by Steven W. Webster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Rage argues that anger is the central emotion governing contemporary US politics, with powerful, deleterious effects. Tracing the developments that have given rise to a culture of anger in the mass public, the book sheds new light on both public opinion and voting behavior. Steven W. Webster skillfully uses a combination of novel datasets, new measures of anger, and a series of experiments to show how anger causes citizens to lose trust in the national government and weaken in their commitment to democratic norms and values. Despite these negative consequences, political elites strategically seek to elicit anger among their supporters. Presenting compelling evidence, Webster ultimately concludes that elites engage in this behavior because voter anger leads to voter loyalty. When voters are angry, they are more likely to vote for their party's slate of candidates at multiple levels of the federal electoral system.
Download or read book White Sororities and the Cultural Work of Belonging written by Charlotte Hogg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Hogg takes a close look, through the example of White university sororities, at how we create and cling to subcultures through the notion of belonging, and how spoken and unspoken rhetorics contribute to this notion. Renewed calls to end Greek-letter organizations for racism and sexism, including increased scrutiny on White women’s social justice failings, have intensified. But as Hogg shows, rhetorics of belonging have always occurred amid and even in response to anti-GLO sentiment. She shows how rhetorical efforts by members for members foster belonging for insiders while also seeking to appease those on the outside. In her analysis, Hogg positions the study of rhetoric beyond traditional methods of persuasion to show how we communicate and participate in communities as citizens in subtle ways beyond speaking and writing. Through engaging narrative drawing on her experiences as a member of a White sorority, archival research, and interviews with collegians and alumni, she shows how efforts toward belonging can influence particular beliefs about womanhood in complex ways. This thought-provoking volume will interest scholars and students from a range of disciplines, including rhetoric and communication studies, gender studies, feminism, sociology, cultural anthropology, and history.

Download or read book Commercial Agency Franchise and Distribution Contracts PEL CAFDC written by Martijn Willem Hesselink and published by sellier. european law publ.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rules presented in this volume of "Principles of European Law" deal with commercial agency, franchise and distribution contracts, and with other contracts where one party uses the other party's skill and efforts to bring its products to the market. Although these Principles are not directly applicable to other long-term (commercial) contracts, some of the Articles may be applied to such contracts by way of analogy where appropriate. The economic function of all three contracts is that they are instrumental in bringing products to the market. They are so-called vertical agreements, as they are agreements between economic actors on different levels in the production and distribution chain. Obviously, the economic importance of these contracts is enormous since they form the connection between producers and retailers who sell the products to consumers and other final users. There are only very few economic sectors where producers regularly sell their products directly to final consumer users. Goodwill compensation after the ending of a distribution contract, the moment at which the agent's commission is due, the franchisor's obligation to maintain the good reputation of the network are but a few examples of issues where specific rules are needed in order to give legal practice some guidance and to provide practitioners with a reasonable degree of legal certainty.

Download or read book Aggadat Bereshit written by Lieve Teugels and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggadat Bereshit is a homiletic Midrash on the Book of Genesis written in Hebrew, about the 10th century CE. It has a unique threefold structure, dividing the chapters or homilies according to the three parts of Tenakh: Torah (Genesis), Prophets and Writings. It contains interesting material, some unparalleled in rabbinic literature, such as an anti-Christian interpretation of Genesis 22. Besides being the first translation, this volume presents some variants from manuscripts unknown by its last editor (S. Buber, Krakow 1903). This English translation will be welcomed in the world of Jewish and Biblical Studies, academics as well as lay-persons with lesser knowledge of rabbinic Hebrew. The extensive introduction gives an up-to-date overview of the questions as to text, contents, structure, dating and provenance of this hitherto neglected Midrash.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad outlines of God's faithfulness have, of course, been well known. But this rereading by Professor Sankenfeld lets us see much that we have missed. This book thus raises important questions, not only about exegetical substance, but also about the interpretive process. The two belong together. The combination here is a welcome articulation."
