Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loyalists in Nova Scotia hoped that their anticipated prosperity, to be achieved with British aid, would show that the American rebellion had been a terrible mistake. But prosperity was elusive. The loyalists were disappointed not only by their treatment at the hands of the British government - their reluctant benefactor - but also by the apparent unwillingness of the government and the people of Nova Scotia to recognise their sacrifice and encourage their advancement. This sense of opposition from the existing community made their experience different from that of loyalists elsewhere and contributed to the intensity and longevity of Nova Scotia's loyalist tradition. The early period of loyalist settlement came to a close shortly after Britain gained portable pensions and withdrew free provisions, a turn of events which led many of the exiles to return to their homeland. By 1791 relations with the old settlers and the provincial government, changing attitudes toward the United States, and conflict among themselves had modified loyalist opinions and expectations in ways they would never have imagined a decade earlier.

Book Birchtown and the Black Loyalist Experience

Download or read book Birchtown and the Black Loyalist Experience written by Stephen Davidson and published by Formac Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles experiences of African Americans who were part of the influx of Loyalist refugees from the American Revolution. The Black Loyalists were both freed and enslaved Black Americans who had joined the British side. For their loyalty, they were evacuated by the British Navy to Nova Scotia, where they were to receive freedom, land, and provisions. The Black Loyalists landed at a settlement named Birchtown, adjoining the white Loyalist town of Shelburne. On arrival they found virtually no shelter. Many died and others only survived by digging small holes in the ground and fixing logs over top for makeshift huts. Food was extremely scarce. White Loyalists quickly received their land and provisions. It was years before the Black Loyalists received their land grants, and not everyone got a plot. The lands provided proved to be rocky and hard to cultivate. Ultimately many Black Loyalists chose to leave Nova Scotia to go to Sierra Leone, West Africa, founding a new settlement there. Others remained, and their descendants are found in communities across Nova Scotia and beyond. Through images, artifacts, and text, this book tells the story of Birchtown and its residents as well as the larger story of Black Loyalist history, reflecting the research and exhibits in the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre in Birchtown.

Book Land Settlement and Politics on Eighteenth Century Prince Edward Island

Download or read book Land Settlement and Politics on Eighteenth Century Prince Edward Island written by J. Bumsted and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987-06-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to most previous works on the subject, this is not a local or regional history, but a book in colonial and/or imperial history which focuses on Prince Edward Island. This broader perspective allows Bumsted to show, for example, that the decision to distribute land to proprietors was a comprehensible and even liberal move by British government in the context of the imperial expansion of the 1760s. Bumsted demonstrates that the external influence of the American Revolution is more important than had been thought, both in isolating the island from Britain and, through the handling of Loyalist immigrants, in exacerbating the conflicts over land ownership. Previously, Prince Edward Island's crucial formative period from 1763 to the end of the eighteenth century has not received sufficient attention, while the proprietorial system has received too much attention without sufficient critical analysis. Land, Settlement, and Politics on Eighteenth-Century Prince Edward isalnd redresses the balance.

Book excerpt: Where do you find evidence of the Loyalist History of Nova Scotia? After the American Revolution approximately 30,000 United Empire Loyalists, individuals who had remained loyal to the British cause, came as refugees to what is now Nova Scotia. Since the Spring of 2014 I have travelled the province of Nova Scotia exploring sites related to the settlement of United Empire Loyalists. I have taken thousands of photographs, prepared dozens of videos, and authored many historical articles using information learned from my visits. The purpose of this book is to share the information I have discovered on my historical explorations. This book includes descriptions and photographs of Buildings, Cairns, Cemeteries, Churches, Gravestones, Monuments, and Forts connected to the United Empire Loyalists. Brian McConnell

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER This groundbreaking book offers the first global history of the loyalist exodus to Canada, the Caribbean, Sierra Leone, India, and beyond. At the end of the American Revolution, sixty thousand Americans loyal to the British cause fled the United States and became refugees throughout the British Empire. Liberty’s Exiles tells their story. This surprising new account of the founding of the United States and the shaping of the post-revolutionary world traces extraordinary journeys like the one of Elizabeth Johnston, a young mother from Georgia, who led her growing family to Britain, Jamaica, and Canada, questing for a home; black loyalists such as David George, who escaped from slavery in Virginia and went on to found Baptist congregations in Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone; and Mohawk Indian leader Joseph Brant, who tried to find autonomy for his people in Ontario. Ambitious, original, and personality-filled, this book is at once an intimate narrative history and a provocative analysis that changes how we see the revolution’s “losers” and their legacies.
