Book Community and Loyalty in American Philosophy

Download or read book Community and Loyalty in American Philosophy written by Steven A. Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American pragmatism has always had at its heart a focus on questions of communities and ethics. This book explores the interrelated work of three thinkers influenced by the pragmatist tradition: Josiah Royce, Wilfrid Sellars, and Richard Rorty. These thinkers’ work spanned the range of twentieth-century philosophy, both historically and conceptually, but all had common concerns about how morality functions and what we can hope for in our interactions with others. Steven Miller argues that Royce, Sellars, and Rorty form a traditional line of inheritance, with the thought of each developing upon the best insights of the ones prior. Furthermore, he shows how three divergent views about the function, possibilities, and limits of moral community coalesce into a key narrative about how best we can work with and for other people, as we strive to come to think of widely different others as somehow being morally considerable as "one of us."

Book excerpt: "The fault I find with the Kingfield High School," proclaimed Kathleen Wilcox, squatting on the top of a boot locker, and putting on a new pair of patent leather house shoes with a deliberate eye to their effect upon her surrounding friends and foes, "the fault I find—yes, I do find fault and I shall, Lesbia Ferrars, though you are the oldest pupil and take the school under your wing! You needn't make round eyes at me like that! I don't care twopence for your glares! Well, as I was saying—and I won't be interrupted—the fault I find with the Kingfield High School is that it's not nearly go-ahead enough. If you ask me I think it's dropping behind the times!""Dropping behind the times!" echoed Phillis Marsh in open-mouthed amazement."How far do you want it to go?" retorted Lesbia Ferrars, metaphorically picking up the glove and accepting combat. "It's as decent as any other school and nicer than most. Some people never know when they're well off! If you went to the King's College now you'd have twice the home work. Perhaps that's what you're hankering after? They're go-ahead in the matter of work, if you like, at King's!"

Book The Universe Of Reality

Download or read book The Universe Of Reality written by A. Stinson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universe of Reality questions many answers and answers many questions. There are many scientific and political deceptions forwarded to the general public, especially Americans. We have been deceived for hundreds of years. The comments and theories presented in this writing untangle and decipher the phenomena of light, gravity, the four forces, and many political deceptions. The Universe of Reality (UOE) theories are much closer to the truth than the wild, problematic conjectures scientist and politicians present as facts. About 90% of "accepted" theories are wrong, and some just straight lies, 9% twisted truths, and 1% arguable. The UOE theories combine the four forces (strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravity) into one force, the universe of energy. These theories challenge older, accepted theories and conjectures by well known scientists such as Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton, yet the UOE theories are built on the older theories of well known scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is a strong sense of personal values. Helping your children develop values such as honesty, self-reliance, and dependability is as important a part of their education as teaching them to read or how to cross the street safely. The values you teach your children are their best protection from the influences of peer pressure and the temptations of consumer culture. With their own values clearly defined, your children can make their own decisions -- rather than imitate their friends or the latest fashions. In Teaching Your Children Values Linda and Richard Eyre present a practical, proven, month-by-month program of games, family ctivities, and value-building ecercises for kids of all ages.
