Book Full Wave Simulations of Fast Wave Mode Conversion and Lower Hybrid Wave Propagation in Tokamaks

Download or read book Full Wave Simulations of Fast Wave Mode Conversion and Lower Hybrid Wave Propagation in Tokamaks written by John C. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast Wave (FW) studies of mode conversion (MC) processes at the ion -- ion hybrid layer in toroidal plasmas N must capture the disparate scales of the FW and mode converted ion Bernstein (IBW) and ion cyclotron waves (ICW). Correct modeling of the MC layer requires resolving wavelengths on the order of k pi~1 which leads to a scaling of the maximum poloidal mode number, Mmax, proportional to 1/p (p=pi/L). The computational resources needed a scale with the number of radial (Nr), poloidal (No), and toroidal (No) elements as Nr * No * N3o. Two full wave codes, a massively-parallel-processor (MPP) version of the TORIC-2D finite Larmor radius code [M. Brambilla, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 41, 1 (1999)] and also an all orders spectral code AORSA2D [E. F. Jaeger et al., Phys. Plasmas 9, 1873 (2002) ], have been developed which for the first time are capable of achieving the resolution and speed necessary to address mode conversion phenomena in full two-dimensional (2-D) toroidal geometry. These codes have been used in conjunction with theory and experimental data from the Alcator C-Mod [I. H. Hutchinson et al., Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511 (1994)] to gain new understanding into the nature of FWMC in tokamaks. The MPP version of TORIC is also now capable of running with sufficient resolution to model planned lower hybrid range of frequencies (LHRF) experiments in the Alcator C-Mod.

Book Numerical Modeling of Lower Hybrid Heating and Current Drive

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Lower Hybrid Heating and Current Drive written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation of currents in toroidal plasma by application of waves in the lower hybrid frequency range involves the interplay of several physical phenomena which include: wave propagation in toroidal geometry, absorption via wave-particle resonances, the quasilinear generation of strongly nonequilibrium electron and ion distribution functions, and the self-consistent evolution of the current density in such a nonequilibrium plasma. We describe a code, LHMOD, which we have developed to treat these aspects of current drive and heating in tokamaks. We present results obtained by applying the code to a computation of current ramp-up and to an investigation of the possible importance of minority hydrogen absorption in a deuterium plasma as the ''density limit'' to current drive is approached.

Book Full wave Simulations of LH Wave Propagation in Toroidal Plasma with Non Maxwellian Electron Distributions

Download or read book Full wave Simulations of LH Wave Propagation in Toroidal Plasma with Non Maxwellian Electron Distributions written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The generation of energetic tails in the electron distribution function is intrinsic to lower-hybrid (LH) heating and current drive in weakly collisional magnetically confined plasma. The effects of these deformations on the RF deposition profile have previously been examined within the ray approximation. Recently, the calculation of full-wave propagation of LH waves in a thermal plasma has been accomplished using an adaptation of the TORIC code. Here, initial results are presented from TORIC simulations of LH propagation in a toroidal plasma with non-thermal electrons. The required efficient computation of the hot plasma dielectric tensor is accomplished using a technique previously demonstrated in full-wave simulations of ICRF propagation in plasma with non-thermal ions.

Book Heating in Toroidal Plasmas

Download or read book Heating in Toroidal Plasmas written by E. Canobbio and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heating in Toroidal Plasmas II, Volume 1 contains the proceedings of the 2nd Joint Grenoble-Varenna International Symposium held in Como, Italy, on September 3-12, 1980. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the status of heating of toroidal plasmas as a means of creating a practically inexhaustible source of energy with maximum safety and economy. Topics covered range from plasma heating activities in countries such as Japan and the United States to electron cyclotron heating, lower hybrid resonance, and ion cyclotron heating. Comprised of 62 chapters, this volume first looks at radio-frequency heating efforts in the European Community as well as heating of toroidal plasmas in the United States and Japan, along with fusion research in China. The next section is devoted to electron cyclotron heating, paying particular attention to its theoretical aspects and presenting the results of experiments using the Tokamak and the CLEO stellarator. Subsequent chapters deal with the feasibility of igniting a thermonuclear plasma with lower hybrid heating; theory of lower hybrid heating in Tokamaks; plasma heating experiments in lower hybrid frequency range; and mode conversion and wave damping in the low frequency range. The excitation and propagation of the fast wave in a two-component non-uniform plasma are also explored. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners and research workers engaged in plasma physics.
