Book Development of a Hydrological Modelling Toolkit to Support Sustainable Development of the Lower Burdekin Groundwater System

Download or read book Development of a Hydrological Modelling Toolkit to Support Sustainable Development of the Lower Burdekin Groundwater System written by Jipu Wang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this modelling study is to simulate the groundwater flow behaviour in the Lower Burdekin groundwater system. The model area includes areas occupied by the North and South Burdekin Water Board areas and the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme area. The model described in this report will be used to analyse the issue of rising groundwater table, evaluate the impact of land and water management on the groundwater system, and assess the potential long-term consequences of climate change. The model will provide the basis for the development of a seawater intrusion model and solute transport model.

Book Lower Burdekin Ground Water

Download or read book Lower Burdekin Ground Water written by Mary Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality project Intitiation of a Lower Burdekin Water Quality and Salinity Management Program, CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences were engaged to analyse the groundwater database data maintained by the Queensland Government Department of Natural Resources and Mines (QNRM) for trends in groundwater salinity and nitrate concentration. This report details the analyses performed and reports some of the overall trends from the Lower Burdekin groundwater database data. This work looks at whether salinity and nitrate levels are changing and the rate at which they are rising or falling. Electrical conductivity (EC) was used as a surrogate for salinity" --P. 5.

This report also provides detail on all data including previous studies and reports, hydrological and hydrogeological framework of the Plan area, water balance for all the main components of the system, and a recommendation of an appropriate approach to the proposed modelling of the aquifer system.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the movement of chloride in the Lower Burdekin region and provides a detailed outline of the development of an instructional chloride transport model. The model has been constructed as a part of a suite of hydrological modelling tools to assess and inform management decisions that seek to address a number of key issues in the region. These issues include seawater intrusion, the discharge of solutes to the estuarine and coastal environment from groundwater, declining groundwater quality and further impacts of land and water use.

Book Development of a Hydrological Modelling Toolkit to Support Sustainable Development of the Lower Burdekin Groundwater System

Download or read book Development of a Hydrological Modelling Toolkit to Support Sustainable Development of the Lower Burdekin Groundwater System written by M. J. Lenahan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive geochemical assessment was needed to address the data gaps that existed with regard to the redox state of aquifer up-gradient of known groundwater discharge zones. This assessment focused on the coastal portion of the aquifer system where fresh terrestrial groundwater meets the intruded seawater wedge, known as a subterranean estuary (STE), and riparian zones of creeks and rivers where groundwater discharge is known to occur.

Book Investigation of Groundwater Salinity in the Airdmillan Road Area North Burdekin Water Board

Download or read book Investigation of Groundwater Salinity in the Airdmillan Road Area North Burdekin Water Board written by Kumar A. Narayan and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years water quality issues have become apparent in coastal areas of the Lower Burdekin. Longer term, steadily rising groundwater salinity levels have been reported in bores in the Airdmillan Road area of the North Burdekin Water Board (NBWB). The Airdmillan Road area is close to the coast and the environment surrounding the area is a complex mix of hydrological features. Groundwater and surface water are used for irrigation of sugarcane. Lack of pumping volumes is a severe impediment to allow both whole-of scheme and on-farm water management. The current level of available data on groundwater & surface water pumping and crop water requirements is not sufficient to show how each of these factors contribute to the overall hydrology and salinity in the area. This report briefly describes the extent and cause of the problem to help support development of a management plan for sustainable groundwater resources in the area. Despite the lack of data it is believed that the main cause of increasing groundwater salinity is the volume of water extracted from bores in the area resulting in upwelling / upconig (i.e. movement of saline water from deeper in the aquifer to shallower depths). A fine balance between pump location, pumping volume, and pump depth must exist to ensure water quality is not degraded. We strongly recommend that further work be undertaken to measure the amount of groundwater pumped and surface water applied for irrigation. This work could then be used to identify the major drivers of water quality deterioration in the area and ultimately support development of a regional management plan built on more robust knowledge of the local hydrology.
