Book Low Volatile Organic Compound Coatings for Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures

Download or read book Low Volatile Organic Compound Coatings for Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this collaborative project between Corus, Centra Sviluppo Materiali (CSM) and Arcelor was to assess the performance of low-VOC coating systems compared to their solvent-borne counterparts. Firstly, environmental impacts of low-VOC and solvent-borne coatings were determined using a life cycle assessment (LCA). Secondly, several commercial formulations, including solvent, water-borne, high solids and hybrid, were applied on blast-cleaned, zinc-metallised and HDG steels. Their applicability was compared. Then these coupons underwent accelerated and natural weathering tests to be evaluated for their corrosion resistance. Electrochemical studies were used to explain corrosion mechanism studies. Finally, sensitivity of surface preparation of low VOC systems was also studied for new, as well as flash- rusted and weathered, structures. In conclusion, low-VOC coating systems have shown equivalent or better performances in terms of paint preparation, corrosion resistance and sensitivity to surface preparation compared to the solvent-borne reference systems.

Book Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings

Download or read book Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings written by Amy Forsgren and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-04-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing the most suitable coatings for structures such as bridges and building supports can extend the service life of that structure significantly. Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings discusses the most important variables in the testing, selection, and application of heavy-duty, organic corrosion-protection paints. The book addresses the maintenance and restoration of older infrastructure and industrial plant as well as coatings for new structures made from various types of steel. The author, Amy Forsgren, examines the mechanisms of aging and deterioration caused by ultraviolet light, condensation, temperature, and chemical reactions. She also provides a complete description of composition of anti-corrosive organic coatings, including pigments, binders, and additives. Ms. Forsgren suggests which corrosion tests provide the most useful information on coating performance and corrosion-protection. Several chapters review the advantages and disadvantages of of different surface preparation methods. In addition, the author considers the environmental impact of various coatings and recognizes health hazards posed by volatile organic compounds (VOC's), toxic or hazardous pigments such as lead, and silica dust exposure. She also offers recommendations for providing safe working environments for personnel handling surface preparation. Integrating engineering aspects and corrosion expertise with paint formulation knowledge and surface chemistry, Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings provides unique coverage of the most advanced treatments for extending the life span of heavy-duty metal structures today.

Book Environmentally Acceptable Materials for the Corrosion Protection of Steel Bridges

Download or read book Environmentally Acceptable Materials for the Corrosion Protection of Steel Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently promulgated environmental regulations concerning volatile organic compounds (VOC) and certain hazardous heavy metals have had a great impact on the bridge painting industry. As a response to these regulations, many of the major coating manufacturers now offer "environmentally acceptable" alternative coating systems to replace those traditionally used on bridge structures. The Federal Highway Administration sponsored a 7-year study to determine the relative corrosion control performance of these newly available coating systems. The most promising coating systems were selected for long-term field evaluation based on accelerated test performance. The long-term exposure testing was conducted for 5 years in three marine locations. Panels were exposed on two bridges, one in New Jersey and one in southern Louisiana. The third long-term exposure location was in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. Thirteen coating systems were included for long-term exposure testing.
