Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides are receiving a great deal of attention because the materials produced are showing promise in the fields of catalysis and electrochemistry. These materials are being produced in a variety of ways, but the low temperature hydrothermal method is producing materials with desired structural characteristics. This study discusses efforts in mild reaction conditions of heat temperatures ranging between 160 and 200 deg C. The factors of pH, reaction time, reaction temperature, and the presence of organic templating cations are also studied to see their impact on traditional and microwave reactions. The relatively new field of microwave synthesis has shown that materials which customarily took 2 days of reaction time in the traditional ovens are reproducible in 30-60 minutes via the microwave ovens. The influence of the organic cations in the reaction mediums is the focus of this particular study. The ability to produce layered vanadium oxides in the absence of such templating cations as TMA would make the materials potentially better for electrochemical purposes. This research used a variety of solvents in an attempt to produce interlayer bridging by organic anions. The solvents of ethylene glycol and acetic acid act as those bridges, each with 2 accessible oxygens.

Book Lithium Ion Batteries

Download or read book Lithium Ion Batteries written by Ilias Belharouak and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight chapters in this book cover topics on advanced anode and cathode materials, materials design, materials screening, electrode architectures, diagnostics and materials characterization, and electrode/electrolyte interface characterization for lithium batteries. All these topics were carefully chosen to reflect the most recent advances in the science and technology of rechargeable Li-ion batteries, to provide wide readership with a platform of subjects that will help in the understanding of current technologies, and to shed light on areas of deficiency and to energize prospects for future advances.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Fluoride and Oxide Cathodes for Rechargeable Batteries

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Fluoride and Oxide Cathodes for Rechargeable Batteries written by Nancy Hao-Jan Twu and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing new cathode materials is key to improving the energy density of rechargeable batteries and enabling new applications of energy storage. In this thesis, two families of materials were explored as candidate cathode materials: the dirutile and rutile polymorphs of LiMnF4, and layered lithium-excess . . . Dirutile LiMnF4 was identified from high-throughput computation as a promising conversion cathode. The dirutile polymorph was synthesized through a new low temperature route, and the rutile polymorph was discovered upon mechanical milling. With simple synthesis and electrode preparation methods, both dirutile and rutile polymorphs of LiMnF4 showed electrochemical activity. Electron diffraction confirmed both polymorphs to convert upon lithiation along different reaction paths. As with other fluorides, specific capacity was strongly linked with processing conditions. The layered lithium-excess . . . compounds were designed from recent understanding of diffusion channels in lithium-excess materials. Increasing lithium content was found to improve both discharge capacity and capacity retention. Structural studies revealed a complex nanostructure pattern of Li-Sb and Ni-Sb ordering where the interface between these domains formed the correct local configuration for good lithium mobility. The

Book New Alternative Oxides Used as Cathodes in Batteries

Download or read book New Alternative Oxides Used as Cathodes in Batteries written by Hanaa Abuzeid and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using cheap and environment benign alternative oxides as cathodes in batteries is the current trend to give cheap, environmently benign and high energeytic cathode material instead of the commerecial one of high excepensive, toxic and unstable LiCoO2 used in lithium ion batteries. Using alpha-manganese dioxides of the tunnel structure with their modifications by using Sn and Co as dopants as cathodes in alkaline batteries.

Book Solution Synthesis and Characterization of Lithium Manganese Oxide Cathode Materials

Download or read book Solution Synthesis and Characterization of Lithium Manganese Oxide Cathode Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonaqueous coprecipitation process has been developed to prepare controlled stoichiometry lithium manganese oxalate precipitates. The process involved mixing a methanolic Li-Mn nitrate solution with a methanolic solution containing tetramethylammonium oxalate as the precipitating agent. The resulting oxalates were readily converted to a variety of phase pure lithium manganese oxides at moderate temperatures ((less-than or equal to)600°C), where the phase formed was determined by the initial Li/Mn ratio in the starting solution. Metal cation dopants have been incorporated into the oxalate precipitate by dissolving the appropriate metal nitrate in the Li-Mn precursor solution The various starting solutions, oxalate precipitates, and calcined oxides have been extensively characterized using a variety of techniques, including 7Li NMR, TGA/DTA, SEM, and XRD. Results indicate that a strong interaction occurs between Li and Mn in the nitrate solution which carries over into the oxalate phase during precipitation. The morphology and the crystallite size of the oxide powders were shown to be controlled by the morphology of the oxalate precursor and the oxalate calcination temperature, respectively. The results of initial cathode performance tests with respect to dopant type (Al, Ni, Co) and concentration for LiMn2O4 are also reported.

Book Materials for Sustainable Energy

Download or read book Materials for Sustainable Energy written by Vincent Dusastre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for cleaner, cheaper, smaller and more efficient energy technologies has to a large extent been motivated by the development of new materials. The aim of this collection of articles is therefore to focus on what materials-based solutions can offer and show how the rationale design and improvement of their physical and chemical properties can lead to energy-production alternatives that have the potential to compete with existing technologies. In terms of alternative means to generate electricity that utilize renewable energy sources, the most dramatic breakthroughs for both mobile (i.e., transportation) and stationary applications are taking place in the fields of solar and fuel cells. And from an energy-storage perspective, exciting developments can be seen emerging from the fields of rechargeable batteries and hydrogen storage.
