Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alloys of Uranium with Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earths, and Elements of Main Groups III and IV. The description of uranium and its compounds, for which the Gmelin Institute has started a series of volumes supplementing the main volume of 1936, follows in its arrangement closely the order chosen for the transuranium volumes. Part A treats "The Element", Part B "The Metal and its Alloys", Part C "The Compounds", Part D "The Chemistry in Solution", and finally Part E "The Coordination Compounds". Part E, "The Coordination Compounds" comprises two volumes which already have been finished and are available - completely written in English. Series A comprises 7 volumes which are all available. Series C will comprise 14 volumes of which only volume 6 is missing. Series D consists of 4 volumes dealing with the chemistry in solution, which already have been finished and are available. The present volume describes the alloys and the intermetallic compounds with the metals of main groups I to IV - those systems with semimetals such as boron and germanium are to be found in corresponding volumes in Uranium C series. In the volume B 2 main emphasis is given to the binary systems. The most frequently investigated systems are uranium-beryllium and uranium-aluminium because of their special scientific (U-Be) and technological (U-Al) importance.

Book Superconductivity in New Materials

Download or read book Superconductivity in New Materials written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discoveries of new superconducting materials, most of them during the last 30 years, have served very much as the context for further developments in theory which continue to the present. In many of these cases, the observations of superconductivity in new materials were completely unexpected and therefore may be regarded as real discoveries. Even the most visible progress, which followed a search using, to some extent, conventional wisdom, was finally rather unexpected – the discovery of high-Tc superconductivity in copper oxides. This book presents superconductivity in this materials context and displays some of the underlying simplicity in the materials record that provided fuel for the theoretical developments. Not only is the phenomenon deeply interesting, the metallic systems where it plays out are as well, and superconductivity gives a very interesting window from which to view the nature of electrically conducting materials. The level is not advanced, yet allows the serious reader to access the current developments in the literature. Addresses in detail the exciting developments after 1980. Demonstrates that progress in superconductivity is to a large extent due to progress in materials synthesis and characterization. Gateway to the current developments in the literature.

Book Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides

Download or read book Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides written by J.X. Boucherle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides: Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermions focuses on the characteristics, reactions, transformations, technologies, and processes involved in the study of anomalous rare earths and actinides. The selection first offers information on lanthanides and actinides and electronic structures in cerium monopnictides. Topics include rare earth metals with fluctuating valencies, 'normal' rare earth metals, and band calculation and Fermi surface. The text then elaborates on neutron scattering studies of anomalous rare earth compounds, including magnetic neutron scattering measurements, stability and localization of magnetic moments, and condensed state. The manuscript examines the transport properties of cerium monochalcogenides and pressure-volume relationships of cerium monochalcogenides and monopnictides. The text also ponders on the theory of anisotropic magnetic behavior in hybridizing actinide systems; band hybridization effects on indirect magnetic coupling of localized moments; and neutron scattering from transuranium materials. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the research on anomalous rare earths and actinides.

Book Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Valence Fluctuations and Heavy Fermions

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Valence Fluctuations and Heavy Fermions written by L.C. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Koln meeting (August 28-31, 1984), Irdia was chosen as the venue for the next International Conference on Valence Fluctuations. lhis was in recognition ard appreciation of the work done, both experimental ard theoretical, by the Irdian scientists in this area during the last decade. We decided to hold this Conference in the month of January, 1987 at Bangalore. lhe subject of Valence Fluctuations has kept itself alive ard active as it has provided many shocks ard suprises particularly among the Ce- ard U-based intermetallies. lhe richness of many interesting physical phenomena occurring in mixed valent materials, the flexibility of modifying their physical properties (by alloying, for example) ard the possibility of synthesizing a wide variety of new such materials seem to be the key factors in this regard. Barely six months before this Conference, an International Conference on Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides (ICAREA) had been held at Grenoble (July, 1986) which also focussed on mixed valence ard heavy fermion phenomena. In spite of this, the response to this' Conference was very enthusiastic and encouraging. Many interesting ard important results were presented at this Conference which have been included in this volume.

Book Ultrasonics of High Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors

Download or read book Ultrasonics of High Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors written by Moises Levy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics, Volume XX: Ultrasonics of High-Tc and Other Unconventional Superconductors covers the many acoustic studies of the high-Tc superconductors. This book is composed of 10 chapters that include some unconventional superconducting systems, such as superfluid 3He, heavy Fermion superconductors, and magnetic re-entrant superconductors. The introductory chapter summarizes the results that have been observed in Bardeen, Cooper, and Schriefer superconductors as functions both of temperature and magnetic field. The subsequent chapters deal with the theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrasonic study of some unconventional superconductors. Considerable chapters are devoted to the measurements with sound waves on the sintered high-Tc superconducting systems. These chapters examine first the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the velocity and elastic constants in sintered high-Tc superconductors, as well as the sound absorption and dispersion measurements on single crystals of these superconductors. Discussions on the small-sample resonant ultrasound technique that uses thin piezoelectric films and the effect of oxygen on superconducting properties and the response of sound to these additions are also provided in these chapters. The concluding chapter presents a theoretical foundation for sound measurements in the superconducting state, emphasizing the effects of multigap structures and gas anisotropy on sound attenuation in the superconducting state of the cuprate superconductors. This volume will be of great benefit to researchers in the fields of electronics technology and in applied and engineering mechanics.

Book Ten Years of Superconductivity 1980 1990

Download or read book Ten Years of Superconductivity 1980 1990 written by H.R. Ott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected and therefore really amazing discovery of J. G. Bednorz and K. A. R32 Miiller , that certain oxide compounds enter a superconducting state at temperatures above 30 K pushed research on superconductivity into the limelight of science in general in a way that seemed reserved for a while for high-energy or particle physics only. The common interest was then even more aroused when subsequent work rather quickly established that in the same class of compounds (oxides), critical temperatures of superconductivity above R36 the boiling point of nitrogen could be achieved . It might therefore be expected, that this entire review would solely deal with superconductivity at high temperatures, i. e. , above the boiling point of hydrogen. From my point of view, however, any unexpected occurrence of superconductivity is a challenge to scientists interested either in the physics of this phenomenon or in its materials-science aspects. In this respect, the last ten years have been quite revolutionary in the sense that on various occasions, superconductivity was discovered in materials whose physical properties were not obviously favourable for adopting this ground state. This period started with the observation that homogeneous coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order in the same material was possible. Later it was found that electrons whose effective mass was tremendously enhanced by magnetic interactions, may also form a superconducting state, namely in materials that were subsequently identified as heavy electron superconductors.

Download or read book Superconductors written by A. V. Narlikar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconductors is neither about basic aspects of superconductivity nor about its applications, but its mainstay is superconducting materials. Unusual and unconventional features of a large variety of novel superconductors are presented and their technological potential as practical superconductors assessed. The book begins with an introduction to basic aspects of superconductivity. The presentation is readily accessible to readers from a diverse range of scientific and technical disciplines, such as metallurgy, materials science, materials engineering, electronic and device engineering, and chemistry. The derivation of mathematical formulas and equations has been kept to a minimum and, wherever necessary, short appendices with essential mathematics have been added at the end of the text. The book is not meant to serve as an encyclopaedia, describing each and every superconductor that exists, but focuses on important milestones in their exciting development.

Book Symmetry and Pairing in Superconductors

Download or read book Symmetry and Pairing in Superconductors written by M. Ausloos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings of a NATO-ARW (HTECH ARW 97 1843) held at the Oreanda Hotel, Yalta, Ukraine from April 29 till May 2 , 1998 resulted from many discussions between various workers, concerning the need for a gathering of all (if possible) who were concerned with the subject of symmetry of the order parameter and pairing states for superconductivity. We applied ourselves in particular to High critical Temperature Superconductors (HTS), but also studied other unconventional superconductors. The study of HTS is one of the most prominent research subjects in solid state sciences. The understanding of the role of symmetry and pairing conditions are also thought to be necessary before technological applications since these features may be influenced by external fields. The workshop discussions have touched upon theoretical and experimental aspects, but also on related topics. These served as initiators for a very great amount of discussions with many comments from the audience. More than thirty "long lectures" and one on going "poster session" were held. Private discussions went unrecorded but obviously took place at many locations : lecture halls, staircases, cafes, bedrooms, bars, beach, bus, plane... Arguments openly reported for the first time were often quite sharp ones, -and this is an understatement.
